Interesting article. To be honest what I am most brassed off with Disney is the complicated systems of Genie, Genie+ and Lightning Lanes and what is this Photopass Lens thing?
I have zero interest in the Lighting Lanes, but Genie+ I'm wondering about. I was considering just purchasing it on a couple of days, but, apparently that's $15 a day, but, have it as an add on the UK ticket and it's $120 (approx) for the entire two weeks of the trip.
And I'm of the school of thought that while Disney has a few issues the biggest problem is the guest behaviour and it's getting worse, especially the number of fistfights going on.

If you can get to the parks for rope drop and/or make use of early entry, you wont need G+ or ILL

To be honest, a lot of guests deserve a convoluted system where they have to incur hidden costs and pay extra just to ride. They had a system that was pretty good and FREE and all that guests did was complain about how it made the stand-by lines longer. Instead of marveling how Disney was the one park giving you free virtual reservations while all of the other ones made you pay for it, they still obsessed over how much longer it made their standby lines (ignoring the fact that they could make reservations to ride without waiting much at all).

Personally, I find the Genie+ and LL pretty cheap compared to the price of Fast Lane, Quick Queue, and Express at other parks, but I still prefer Fast Pass, because the priority is so tilted towards stand-by now, you're still waiting in line no matter what. I liked waiting my comeback times out on the midway, and enjoying my red carpet access. Not waiting in lengthy, slow moving lines for 6 minute attractions, staring at the person's head in front of me.

It's like so many other things these days. Some people complained because FastPass or FastPass+ was unfair, because it gave an unfair advantage to people who took the time to learn how to use the system. Just like an athlete who works out harder has an "unfair" advantage over those who don't. Or a student who studies more has an "unfair" advantage over students who don't study.

I loved Fastpass on MDE as it gave people like me a fairer chance, it also stopped the dangerous stampede for paper tickets at rope drop and the groups who would send one person with 30 cards getting to the machine and hogging them.
I loved the FP+ and there was no reason to change it.

I mean, on a personal level, I love the idea of using my theme park smarts to easily beat the GP, but from a business perspective, I could see how its silly to reward people just for being good at playing an arbitrary game -- especially when a lot of the skilled ones who win all the time aren't even the biggest spenders.

It's Disney World, though, you should be able to enjoy some chill vibes and feel the magic. Sure, plan ahead, but you shouldn't have to cram like for a test to get value out of a theme park.

(What I noticed from the article was that I was like "ugh, it looks trashy," then realized that I'm so used to viewing perfectly filtered, made up, and plastic-surgeried influencers that I can't stand looking at people who look like me.)

What we've found confusing is that this new system seems to go against what we were told one day.
One day, many moons ago, we were stopped for a survey as we were leaving Epcot. I think they were putting out feelers with regards to changing from FP to FP+. We were rope drop people and used to FP so we questioned a lot of what was said by the CM. We just wanted to understand the upcoming switch to FP+ before we gave our opinion on it.
The CM shared that while FP was great for rope droppers, it was horrible for the Guest who arrived later, like around 4 or 5 pm, because everything was "sold out" by then.
We were told that FP+ would provide a more equitable experience for all Guests regardless of what kind of day they experienced in the parks.
It seems like this new system has made things worse and not better for the Guest who wants to sleep in, relax at their resort and then enjoy their evening in the parks.

Was the impetus behind the new system really guest complaints or just Chapek and his underlings seeing yet another opportunity for up-charging?

FastPass was not that difficult to use (I'm talking about original, not FastPass+, and certainly not Genie). You could enjoy all the chill vibes and magic you wanted to with FastPass. FastPass+ really ramped up the need for planning exponentially, and it looks like Genie has finally taken everything over the edge.

I hope this wasn’t a story for subscribers only. What is the difference between stealing a story and having a non guest at the resort pool?
