California Screamin' Mickey Ears Being Dismantled

Everyone's favorite Disneyland photographer Darkbeer has some new pictures up of the original Mickey Mouse ears on California Screamin' being taken down as part of the Paradise Pier retheme work. http://darkbeer.smugmug.com/gallery/7158648_JMoTY#459399253_VDECv

The rumor on other boards is that only the "ears" will be removed, with the larger circle left behind and then redressed with LED lighting and the "Paradise Pier" sign shown in the model at the DCA Preview Center.

It's interesting to see DCA begin to lose some of the visual icons that it opened with in 2001. That Mickey ears loop was always included on brochures, planning videos, or TV shows as one of the DCA landmarks. The DCA makeover continues at a surprising pace.

Such a sad sight but at the same time a look in to what should be a great new future for DCA. Word also has it that the SF buildings the side with out bathrooms will be walled off soon and construction will start to install the new ones. Wow if your at DCA anytime soon have fun with in your face walls once you hit the Paradise Pier area.

You have
Mickey ears coming off of Scream'n
Midway Games behind walls
Sun Wheel behind walls and beyond amounts of scaffolding
Golden State Amphitheater behind walls
Paradise Bay drained
Lucky Fortune Cookery behind walls
oh and the GCH expansion looming over with scaffolding and tarps

have fun :)

I think I made the right descion to postpone my trip to DL until all this construction is completed!!

Yes, if you've never been to DCA before then now would be a rather ugly time to visit. Walls everywhere, with more walls coming in April, drained lagoon, scaffolding and construction going on inside the park and along the perimeter at the Grand Californian. And it will only expand later in '09 and 2010.

But, it has to be done, and for those of us who visit DCA regularly it's all very exciting!

Three years from today the place will be dramatically different, and the only walls up will be around the entrance to CarsLand that opens that summer! :D

It's my first visit early April and I am expecting a pretty poor view but as long as the attractions are all ok and DL itself is still attractive I won't be too put out.

I don't know if I'll ever make it back to DL so I don't know if I will get to see it after the refurb but even so, I am happy it's all going ahead. Disney as a whole needs to keep on innovating and refurbing

OK, I registered JUST to thank TP2000 for the kind words...

You are welcome Darkbeer. We've not met in person yet, but your pictorial updates are very much appreciated and I'm happy to share them with others! :sohappy:

I'm sure it's been posted elsewhere but I'm admittedly too lazy to run a search. What's the vision for the Paradise Pier area Refurb? What will that particular area look like when it's done?

And do they still plan to make the DCA Park entrance look just like the entrance to DHS? That would be a bit disappointing to me since I think the current DCA entrance is one of the better looking theme park entrances out there. The DHS entrance is a bit bland IMO.

I believe its only the turnstyles that are a copy of the DHS ones.

Yes, the new PP sign looks nice, but I still miss the Mickey ears. I'm not ususally resistant to change, but this is one change I could do without (not that it's all about me or what I want ).

The sad thing is my pics from our April 2006 trip were lost to a hard drive crash (I know - my fault for not backing them up sooner). I really want to visit DCA, but not until the wall city comes down. I guess that means I'll be waiting for a few more years.
