If you want to learn, you might try Rhino3D. You can only save (your work) 25 times, but you can use it to learn. Other than that, shell out some bucks for anything worthwhile. I use and love Lightwave 3D. It's expensive, I luckily bought mine off a rich friend who decided (after his dad bought tons of software) that he didn't want to take graphic design.

I used to be a big fan of 3D Studio Max, then when i heard that Disney were going to use Maya 4 to do the CGI in Treasure Planet, i changed progs, and i'm glad i did.

It's alot faster at rendering and the actual moddeling.
