AVATAR land coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom

I sure hope they don't.
Allowing merchandising concerns to trump the creative process is what allows awful claptrap like Cars 2 and the recent Star Warses to be made.

Not that I'm holding up Avatar as a shining example of modern storytelling, only that it makes me happy that merchandising does not seem to be concern #1 at Disney Management. For once.

Oh, it will be. Don't you worry about that.

I don't doubt there will be a significant merchandise component to this, but relative to the seemingly more logical Star Wars or Carsland expansions to DHS, the merchandise for Avatar would be minimal. Having said that, we have no idea what may present itself for merchandise options in the 2nd and 3rd movies.

I'm still holding out for one of those flamethrowers.

Something tells me the aliens will somehow start wearing more clothing, and with feathers and jeweled accesories, in Avatar II and III.

There's no way kids are going out trick-or-treating in just blue bodypaint and loincloths.

When a check on Target.com comes up with barely a dozen Avatar items for sale, but the same Target search for Disney-Pixar Cars comes up with almost 400 items across multiple store departments, you know there's going to be some "discussions" between Burbank and Mr. Cameron about movies II and III.

Avatar does not demonize humans it demonizes selfishness, and the desire to make profit even when it will destroy and ancient culture. In essence it demonizes the indifference that allows distraction. The mentality that allows people to say "it will only effect my great grand children, i'll be gone so it doesn't matter" As I said selfishness. At the heart it is a story about preservation and a respect of nature.

I am excited and I think everyone needs to understand that this is not about the movie it is about a planet with a culture of creatures in tune with nature.

Conservation and connection. I cannot think of a more beautiful concept for Animal Kingdom.

This will be more about the planet. It is not the movie so even if you don't like the film you will love this land of nature and species alien to us living in harmony with their planet.

No doubt its not about the movie its about creating a new world that shares its themes with the philosophy of DAK park.

Some people objected to my labeling Avatar as not in the spirit of "Disney fun" earlier in this thread. I still stand by that point - Avatar is too self-serious and pretentious that the movie is just not a fun adventure like Indiana Jones. But it just now occurred to me, the main reason as to why I'm having difficulty embracing Avatar. I'm not sure why I wasn't able to vocalize it because now it seems so obvious. I did not like any of the characters in the movie. I'll refer again to Indiana Jones - the characters are likeable and strong enough to live up to the fantastic settings in which their stories take place. Even though I like some of the actors in Avatar, I did not find myself caring one way or another about most of the characters. I hated the pilot, and even Neytiri slightly grated on me after a while.

That and the weak story are my biggest problems with the IP. I don't want to see rides, let alone an entire land, featuring an unlikeable cast of characters. If Disney minimizes the role of the human characters and the main Na'vi cast in favor of heavily emphasizing the setting, the creatures, and physical sensations for the thrill rides, I'd probably enjoy this theme park land even though I hate the movie aside from its visuals.

I have no idea how they will determine the licensing fee but I thought a licensing fee was a set payment negotiated beforehand unlike a royalty fee which would be varying payment based on usage or attendance in this case.

True, there would be a set price but the price would be based on how many people would be in the park / ride the attractions / previous license agreements. The figures wouldn't be plucked out of the sky, it wouldn't be a random number, it would be based on figures that use attendance as a basis.

Now merch is going to be a percentage or should be a percentage of what is sold.

I see lots of blue stuff toys, whole collections of your disney characters dressed like navis.

Well, your in luck if you dont care for the end result because I'm sure the area will be clearly marked on park maps so you don't accidentally find yourself somewhere you don't deem fun.

One of the things that I like about this project so far is that quote from Cameron floating around about how people really responded to the adventurous parts of the movie: the flying, the exploration of Pandora versus the big action battle scenes. It makes me think Cameron understands what will make this land tick (do people still use that expression?). I don't think this land is a way to ram the Avatar characters specifically into the parks; I think it's definitely more about the Avatar experience. Will characters from the movies appear? Undoubtedly, but don't forget that we only have one out of three movies that we'll have by the time the land opens. The characters from the first movie could end up being a small part in the trilogy.

Avatar 2 will have it's own "Jar Jar", no doubt about it.

Why do so many people on these threads think Disney isn't supposed to have "serious" attractions? Think about the attractions of the original EPCOT Center. The original O Canada, the still present Impressions de France, Spaceship Earth, Living with the Land... Even now, one of the most inspiring scenes in the American Adventure is seeing the flag go up at ground zero.

Things don't always have to be "cute". They can be inspiring. Heck, you're going after poachers on Kilamanjaro Safaris(and the rumors of this being changed, are greatly disappointing)... I'm about to steer clear of these threads. I'm too excited about this beautiful project to see so much butthurt over it. Me and my friends are going to go into cryo sleep so we can wake up and go to the park. Later. :D

Because investing hundreds of millions in a failed franchise is doom for the park?
But as a park goer I am just concerned about riding some really cool attractions with new high-tech ride systems and being immersed in a highly themed land. As long as they can blend this into the AK without sticking out like a sore thumb.

I'm not saying that AVATAR will be my first choice by a long shot, but you must concede that there are some interesting possibilities.

I find it amusing that numerous people keep saying they should build clones of other rides at WDW instead of coming up with something new. The possibilities for rides and themeing out of this are too numerous to count. The technological aspect of new attractions and effects in this land have the ability to go well above and beyond what's standard out there today.

Disney grew to what it is today through new ideas and creative thinking. With something like this let them do what they do best before you start to say such things as "I'll never step foot in that land" or I wish we would just get a cloned copy of a ride from Tokyo etc...

While being absolutely ridiculous it is not surprising that not even one piece of concept art has been put out for this yet but people already hate what they are going to build...
