heres the problem

I have a computer ? for you and hopefully you can help me out. I have some old floppy disks with Disney pics on it and they were on my old computer. This computer doesnt reconize the disk. It either locks up when I try to load the disk or it asks me to format the disk and I was told if you format the disk with stuff on it you would lose all you had on there. Any suggetions or am I screwed lol

It still may be possible to retrieve the files off of it. What make/model/os PC was used to write the files to the floppy disk originally?

Yes...I know people who have done that when they went from a Mac to a Windows PC....OR you can upload all the pix to a website or other storage area. Then you can access the storage area with your new computer and copy them to the hard drive.

Of course, we all know that these aren't Disney pix........knowing Jay, he's probably talking about thousands of o pix?

Actually I've been having the same problem with some older disks, good chance its a screwy floppy-drive. Although just as equal chance that the disk just doesn't work anymore because its older than Tramp. :p

The HP Pavilion 6333 came with Windows 98. Did you use the included "Fun with Photos" software to save those pictures to floppy disks? The HP 531w came with Windows XP Home edition and "My Photo Center" (by ArcSoft) is the default photo program. So, I think the problem is that either XP can't read those photo files because they were saved under Windows 98 or the photo program(s) you used then and now are different.

We need to know what program you used to save the photos to disk in the first place and under what OS. A lot of old Windows 98 software will not run in XP. You may have to try "compatibility mode".

Jay...can you call HP and ask for help? I have a DELL and they have a data reclamation center that specializes in retrieving data from hard drives, cds and floppys. See if HP has such specialists and they may be able to walk ya thru it.

Hey JAY-ROD! Thanks for the information about the Sony Mavica because that helps a lot. The software for the Mavica was designed to work with Win95,Win98,WinME,WinNT 3.x,WinNT 4.x and Windows2000. I am not aware of any versions that were written for Windows XP but you do need software that can read these Mavica file names.

However, I have included some shareware links that have Mavica software that might just work with Windows XP. Try downloading these and see if they will read your floppy files. There are two versions of floppy Mavica files. The "f" files and the "s" files as follows:

Mvc-001f.jpg
Mvc-002f.jpg
Mvc-003f.jpg ...etc.

Mvc-001s.jpg
Mvc-002s.jpg
Mvc-003s.jpg ...etc.

Anyway, just download these programs and see if they can read your disks. If one or both programs do not install or run properly under XP, then try to install and run them in Windows 98 "compatibility mode".

http://www.jhepple.com/Freestuff/mavica_import_utility.htm

http://www.sharewaresoft.com/MavicaZAM-download-563.htm

The following link will tell you how to install and run programs under XP compatibility mode:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gethelp/appcompat.asp

Best of luck and let us know if it works!:D

I just remembered that a free version of Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 Starter Edition is available at this link:

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopalbum/starter.html

Adobe reads most all photo files so this is another tactic you might try to read the files on those disks.

If none of the above work, then try "Search and Recover 1.0a":
