News Announced: Mary Poppins Attraction in UK Pavilion

I’ve never been excited about this Mary Poppins sequel. I’ll probably see it at some point, but this just isn’t something my family was clamoring for Disney to make. Julie Andrews is Mary Poppins — no need for an imitation IMO.

That said, an attraction based on the original is something we’d love!

If any suits were actually waiting to see how their imitation did in order to decide about an attraction, that seems like faulty thinking to me. Some love the ORIGINAL so much they’re not into the imitation... that wouldn’t indicate a lack of interest in the Mary Poppins IP wrt an attraction.

Trust me, she’s not an imitation and this is coming from a big fan of the original give her a shot. She’s...practically perfect (it was way too easy to say that)

I know she’s purported to have “made the role her own”. I’m glad for her, but I’m still not jazzed about it. Doesn’t seem like IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes are too thrilled either. And box office doesn’t seem stellar, but maybe it’ll be a slow burn. Guess we’ll see.

My main point is that box office for “Returns” isn’t a proxy for interest in the Mary Poppins IP in general.

I am interested in this weeks numbers with Christmas included. I will say the film is not better than the original in terms of being a Disney fan. I think many non-Disney fans may like this one more because of its pacing and what not. Many were not fans of the original because of things like that. It certainly could have been much worse but they really did a good job with it.

I wonder if the waffling is more about whether Disney wants to put bigger money into developing a dark ride to sell into multiple parks vs just a one-off carousel for World Showcase?

What's the Mary Poppins footprint in the parks in the Far East? And what is the popularity of the IP there?

I'm sure TDO would love to amortize the development costs of the attraction vs picking up the full tab.

Apologies if this was covered earlier in the thread.

Have to say, I was very hesitant about an attraction based on the new movie. However, I've now seen it twice and I like it far more than I was anticipating I would. Whichever direction TDO decides to go here, I'm alright with.

Emily Blunt absolutely steals the show. It's nearly impossible to live up to Julie Andrews in the Poppins role, but Blunt comes about as close as anyone probably could.

Movie won't be for everyone, but I'd encourage everyone to give it a go before writing it off as I almost did.

Mary Poppins Returns is a solid fun movie and it’s holding extremely well at the box office. It’s gone up 30% over last week box office. So it has legs.
Hard not to compare it to the original but I enjoyed it with my little girls and they were glued to the screen. Emily Blunt did a fantastic job.

It will come out above costs - estimated $400 mil - but it’s not a runaway smash that makes disney move toward attraction tie in. Just the history of Disney moves at play here.

I agree. I dont think that the movie is going to affect the attraction. I think that this is being held up for other reasons that have nothing to do with the movie, at all. No inside info here, just speculating. Marie

Still favor the carousel short term. Some other IP souped-up E Ticket long term.
"IP souped-up E ticket". Does that phrase not sound completely void of any imagination or desire to create something with at least a shred of fluidity?
