Al Lutz Update: Monster's Door Coaster and Tron Cycles

In Lutz's new column, he mentions the possibility of the Monster's Inc. Door Coaster, originally thought up for DHS, going in the "backlot" area of DCA for a Monstropolis plan (despite the fact that Monster's has nothing to do with California). He also talks about the possibility of Tomorrowland getting the Tron attraction, DCA's attendance and plans for the 60th birthday. Very interesting, but where's Iron Man? Take everything with a grain of salt, as usual.

I'm underwhelmed. George K made a big deal at a D23 event about how the PeopleMover tracks could not be legally reused without building all kinds of new safety features/egresses, etc, making any new project completely prohibitive - so I find the Tron rumor kind of out there. Plus, Tron: Legacy bombed.

Monsters sounds very underwhelming as well - a 5+ year old Florida proposal is the best they could come up with?

I want Iron Man back.

Tron legacy didn't really bomb, it just didn't do as well as they'd hoped.

But boy it's pretty obvious they've thrown the towl in on the California theme for DCA. Now its pretty much "Pixar Adventure."

Eh - $172 mil domestic on a $170 mil movie is not good. The animated series was cancelled. The attraction could be good regardless of the IP it's based on, but with Disney's fixation on franchises, I'm surprised it's being considered when Marvel and Lucas are in the house.

Bombed is a harsh word, but my guess is that Disney figures if the development costs for the ride have already been spent for Shanghai, it would make a more economically feasible (aka cheaper) E-Ticket. Plus it would look pretty, and as Carsland showed you don't have to be the most widely popular franchise to bring in the masses.

Monsters Inc is the bigger to me. How is that even remotely related to Hollywood or California? I'd take something else.

And I want Iron Man too (and Oz honestly) but we can't have everything. :(

Yeah, it does, but not for DCA. If one could explain to me how Monstropolis could work in DCA, I'm all ears.
I have a question: If this Monsters mini-land is built, and let's say an Incredibles mini-land is built as well. How would you feel about the back area of the park being called Emeryville or Pixar Studios? The entrances and transitions can have that Pixar brick feel so it looks like you're transcending through their stories. That could be cool.

I don't think I'd like that very much. Pixar Studios is in California, so that's cool, but that's just way too much Pixar in one park. DCA should have more original rides and attractions dedicated to and themed to California. Disney just refuses to do it, though.

i'd love to see a new original attraction in the wilderness land with the bears [i'm having a brain-fart]

Disney had sold over $1 billion in merchandise before the land opened. The franchise is incredibly popular, mostly among little boys.

Why would this area have a Red Car running down it and the Hollywood Tower Hotel at the end of it?

I could see the Monsters coaster as part of a "Pixar Place" type land. That part of the land is naturally cut off from the main drag, so put up arches for "Pixar Studios" like at DHS and have it be the place where the characters live. Make an UP walkthrough house, Ratatouille-themed counter service, etc. I know it's a lot of Pixar, but that's what's been popular lately. In thirty years, only us cranky old folks will care about Pixar vs. Disney. This isn't like the Power Rangers deal, where Pixar can just be sold off again later, IMO. Pixar and Disney are joined at the hip. Pixar and WDFA are not about the buildings or the chairs or the computers... those aren't special; it's the creative talent that make the companies great, and there has been much commingling in that department.

I'm actually less excited about the Tron bike coaster. I never got to ride the Peoplemover or Rocket Rods, but is there a lot of indoor track? When I think of any Tron ride, regardless of the ride system, I want to be in that world, the grid. That means black everywhere. At night, it would still be cool to zip over by the sub lagoon in your little light cycle, but will it be the same at noon in August? I just don't think you'll be able to spend enough time "on the grid".

BTW, is Al sick or something? Did anyone else notice that this wasn't an "Al Lutz column", but it was rather a "Miceage Update" written by "Miceage", and it had all the usual Al trademarks in there? Was he signing the whole column at the end or just that last paragraph? Every other columnist on that site has their name at the top, so what's up?

But then you would have Emeryville on one side of the park, and Carsland (and Bugsland) on the other. At this point they should try to fit Monstropolis near those other 2 areas. Since Emeryville is in northern California, arriving from the SF area would make a lot of sense, at that point. But it won't happen, lol.

But that's just it. Little boys alone are not a large enough market to really give DCA the attendence boost it needed (and yes, I know their parents have to come too). Cars was far from being the most popular Pixar movie, but the land receieved praise across the board and more than one comment along the lines of "I don't even like Cars, but I like this land".

Had Disney built an area that only really appealed to Cars' key market, they would have just built another Bugs Land.

He had others contribute to the column this time. He wrote it, along with others. He's got some chronic health issues.:(
