Like New York...
New York had much fewer deaths than Florida during the second and third waves.

New York has been accused of under-counting death categories, not suppressing overall death #s. If Florida claimed that deaths in nursing homes weren't "nursing home" COVID deaths but instead "general population" COVID deaths that would be better than what they do now, which is to not count deaths when possible.

Masks until 2022 is basically a sure-bet. They will likely relax social distancing before they relax mask policy because liability and $.

Will the booster (third vaccine) shots be recommended/available by the end of 2021? That's a more interesting question IMO. The media has finally started talking about the necessity of boosters (annual or biannual shots) within the last few weeks. USA will have to convince people to take those vaccines too.
I agree that distancing will be relaxed before masks, but it’s way, way too long a time frame to predict with any level of accuracy that we will still need masks 8 months from now. I don‘t agree that’s a sure bet, it’s certainly possible but way too soon to say likely. It’s a sure bet that masks will be around until Memorial Day. It’s a relatively safe bet they will be around until July 4th but I wouldn’t bet my house on it. Anything beyond then is a coin toss at best.

The fact is nobody really knows how the vaccine rollout will go and nobody really knows how long it will take to see the impact. On the negative side, we have potential variants and we may potentially need to wait until July to get everyone vaccinated. On the positive side we could have 60-70% of Americans vaccinated by end of May and we don’t need to have everyone vaccinated to see the start of an impact from vaccinations. It’s possible that cases drop dramatically well before we actually reach herd immunity and there’s no need for cases to go to zero to lose masks and distancing.

The variant boosters may be needed IF one of the variants becomes dominant. Right now the vaccines we have seem to be pretty effective vs the UK variant and less so against the S African one. If the S African one doesn‘t take hold here before the majority are vaccinated it’s possible it never does. So it’s possible that everyone needs a booster by the Fall and it’s also possible they don’t. If the variants still exist outside the US it’s likely everyone gets a booster anyway as a precaution even if they aren’t dominant here. In that case we could very likely be without masks and without distancing before anyone gets a 3rd shot anyway. I don’t think it’s a guarantee that masks and distancing are around until a booster is deployed. I think the relaxing of Covid restrictions will be based on community spread and case numbers.

I love good conspiracy theories!
"While coronavirus deaths are often recorded days or weeks later, Florida abruptly stopped including deaths that occurred more than one month earlier in its daily count on October 24, ten days before the election. Older deaths had consistently been included in the earlier data. The change came after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration announced that it would review every suspected coronavirus death before it is reported. The state began to include the older deaths in its daily counts again on November 17.

The discrepancy was discovered by a University of South Florida professor, according to The South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Jason Salemi, an epidemiologist at the University of South Florida, said he was "surprised" by the gap but "drew no conclusions," according to the report, noting that Florida's death data "continues to be a bit of a black box."

The death data between September 23 and October 20 included 1,128 deaths that had occurred at least a month earlier, or 44% of all reported deaths during that span. When the state resumed reporting the older deaths after the election, a large number of deaths had occurred more than two months earlier, according to an analysis by Salemi.

Prior to the gap in the death data, Florida Surgeon General Dr. Scott Rivkees announced that the state would conduct an additional review of the reported deaths before releasing them publicly "to ensure the accuracy of COVID-19 related deaths.""

Of course they are how do you think we are getting state statistics. All vaccines (not just Covid) are tracked by the government. It’s a matter of public health. How do you think school districts track vaccines?
It’s tracked with lots of demographic stats, that doses were given. But, is the state system able to link it specifically to a person? And, what kind of access do they support for third parties to check it? There’s usually lots of work done to create anonymous demographic stats and not be able to tie it to a person. School districts don’t just call the state, they ask parents to send in records. It’s not like we have a national or state medical record tied to people. Even if we had a national health system, that would probably freak people out. The VA has this for veterans.

There’s a big difference between the state knowing they gave a person with X characteristics a dose and they specifically gave you a dose. The appointment system for the group that gave it to you would, but that’s not just the state.

Here in WA they are handing out the CDC vaccination record card as well as entering it to our state's immunization information system which records all vaccinations given, regardless of age, in the state of WA.
Same questions about what’s tracked in the state system? Especially if it wasn’t the state that administered the dose.

The CDC card is great at letting a person know what they got, and letting them track their own health. It’s a crapshoot at proving to a third party that you really got the vaccine.

Spot on about Fauci! He really needs to stop opining and predicting and just stick to presenting facts. He should be completely and totally focused on speaking about the effectiveness and safety of the vaccines and working on building trust so that as many people as possible will want to be vaccinated.

Constantly spouting worst case scenarios to set low expectations is going to cause a "Doctor who cried wolf" scenario and more and more people will tune him out.

Thats not how politics work. Hes using his credibility gained during the trump era to become more opinion like and less fact like. Educated guess says hes sort of been nudged to act this way. Remember when everyone was bashing trump and saying listen to fauci listen to fauci....cashing in on that now. But alass hes only human too.

Great article showing a 140 fold increase of antibodies to people who previously had covid and get a single Pfizer vaccine shot.

Yep...but I’m cool with 2 shots. Arms out!!

Masks may be gone maybe this summer than early 2022. But social distancing will be gone sooner then masks will be last by summer.

Nope...don’t expect massless magic kingdom and a 4,000 calorie buffet at crystal palace this year...

Could part of it be the lack of vaccines to distribute 7 days a week?

Then that’s something we better “get a look at”, huh?

News 6 has discovered a discrepancy in coronavirus-related deaths reported in Florida.

Investigator Louis Bolden dug into the numbers and found the state of Florida has a different number of deaths than many of the state’s medical examiners. Previously, the state blocked medical examiners from releasing their numbers.

Bolden took that information and ran it through News 6′s trust index, which fact checks questionable information circulating on social media and in our communities.

According to the Florida Department of Health’s coronavirus dashboard, COVID-19 has claimed more than 2,200 lives in the state of Florida. The state even breaks down those deaths by county.

In Lake County, the Department of Health reported 14 deaths but the medical examiner reported 22.

In Orange County, the Department of Health reported 38 deaths but the medical examiner reported 56 deaths, a difference of 18 people.

Orange Osceola Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua Stephany noticed the discrepancy, too.

“My concern was, ‘Why are our numbers different?’” Stephany told News 6.

It’s not always the case that the Department of Health has a lower death count.

In Sumter County, the Department of Health reported 17 deaths and the medical examiner reported seven.

In Seminole, the Department of Health had 13 deaths reported but the medical examiner only had five.

“The biggest thing that I’ve been preaching unfortunately for months is those two different sets of numbers, what they mean,” Stephany said.

Here’s the issue: If someone dies anywhere in Florida, the medical examiner in that county counts that death.

But if someone dies in Florida of COVID-19 and their primary residence is somewhere else -- like snowbirds or visitors, for example -- the state of Florida does not include that death in its COVID-19 death count.

Um, Florida is reporting non-resident deaths. Not sure who posted that. But @DCBaker ’s updates contain it every day

Florida then decided to funnel all data through the state government to prevent MEs from reporting deaths that they didn't want counted.
