In the spirit of the yearly box office tracking that @WhatJaneSays has done, I thought it would be nice to make a thread for 2021 since there seems to be great interest in the box office. Plus, I think it would be better to have all box office talk be contained into one thread just for the sake of staying on topic in the main thread.

So let’s see where each studio and movie stand as of now:

Domestic Top 10 Movies for 2021 (as of 12/28/21):
  1. Spider-Man: No Way Home - $495.1 million
  2. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - $224.5 million
  3. Venom: Let There Be Carnage - $212.5 million
  4. Black Widow - $183.6 million
  5. F9 - $173 million
  6. Eternals - $164.4 million
  7. A Quiet Place Part 2 - $160 million
  8. No Time to Die - $160.7 million
  9. Free Guy - $121.6 million
  10. Ghostbusters: Afterlife - $120.8 million

Following the recent announcement, I have updated the 2nd post about the future studio's releases. Here are some key things:
  • 20th Century Studios has 2 of their 7 releases moving to 2022
  • Pixar now has had its 2nd movie debuting on Disney+ for no extra cost which means the movie will only show in theatres where Disney+ is not available
  • Both Cruella and Black Widow are now going the route of Raya as they do the day and date release
  • Lucasfilm and Searchlight are the only studios that have no changes to their release schedule
It's gonna be a crazy summer...

Don't underestimate pent-up demand. Lots of people want to return to theaters, and while recovery certainly won't be near pre-COVID numbers and never was going to be, it'll be much farther along than you think. People want to get out of the house, not sit around on their couches forever.

The movies will have much better numbers in ticket sales, especially when vaccinations are flying. The number of people saying they will refuse is inflated, as it's guaranteed a lot of those people are simply lying and will get jabbed anyways.

Besides, L.A. and many CA markets are going to open at 50 percent capacity now, Regal is going to reopen on April 2, the engine is truly revving now. And with the recent Regal-WB pact, and the fact AMC and Cinemark will soon follow, obviously, Disney is going to do likewise.

Disney and Cinemark will strike a deal to make Raya play there after all and ticket sales will go up. They'll get the chains to support day-and-date and hold fast to the majority of their theatrical plans and keep supporting exhibition. Mulan, Soul and Luca might get relaunch campaigns in the States. (After all, in normal circumstances, Mulan would've earned $1 billion easily and they know they have a market they can't walk away from by any means.) And exhibition will finally realize that a 72-90 day window is outdated and unneccessary.

If GvsK does that now, then Black Widow should be able to crack $50 million for its OW in July despite being available on D+ (barring another COVID setback).

Drove by our local theater (which is next door to the Cinemark HQ) and was pleasantly surprised by how packed the theater was. I imagine they all went for Kong vs. Godzilla, but it should be an interesting summer to see how the box office improves (if it does).

It's interesting how movies are following similar box office patterns as they did back 40 years ago LOL. COVID-19 has put us back 40 years!

You have Raya at a -5% 3 day, it was actually a +5% compared to Friday to Sunday weekend comparison. They earned more this weekend than last weekend. It looks like Deadline reported it incorrectly.

The summer movie season has started! Black Wido- I mean, Wrath of Man had a solid opening weekend gathering $8 million (according to Deadline). However, Demon Slayer, Mortal Kombat, and Godzilla vs. Kong all fell another 30-60%. That doesn't mean other studios fell as well. Raya and the Last Dragon went UP almost 35% as it gained 505 more theatres due to Cinemark finally showing the movie.
