Trip Report “That’s New” Our Short but Sweet Trip Report 9/30-10/3 2023

Who: Myself, Cetta, and my husband, Aaron, our 9 yo son Joseph, and our 7 yo daughter Sadie.

When: Saturday, September 30 – Tuesday, October 3, 2023

Where: we stayed at Homewood Suites at Flamingo Crossing. We picked it because we wanted someplace affordable ($464 for all 3 nights) with an amazing pool because we knew we would have lots of pool time.

What: it was a short trip because I found cheap roundtrip Spirit flights….$152 for our whole family to fly round trip. We did the personal items only and I stuffed them full so I literally just paid for the flight. Didn’t pick seats or anything. I love it! We decided to do just Magic Kingdom because on our last trip we did just Hollywood Studios and Epcot. Aaron and I also had no expiration 4 day water park tickets from our first trip together in 2009, so we decided it was a good time to use one day of those at Typhoon Lagoon.

I realized we didn't take many family photos this trip. Yes, Joseph has long beautiful hair, there was at least a handful of times he was referred to as a female. I think it actually bothered Sadie more than it did him. He likes his long hair and doesn't want to change it. Good for him to sticking with it. Originally he just wanted to grow his hair out like George Harrison and he just never stopped.

September 30, 2023

Our flight was scheduled to take off at 9:00am with boarding at 8:20am so we aimed to leave the house at 6:30am for our 45-minute drive. Our house is on the market and an open house was scheduled for Sunday, so I woke up super early to clean the kitchen, bathrooms, floors, etc. before the kids got up. Aaron helped me mop while I did the bathrooms. Gosh…no one really tells you how much work it is to sell your house. We got everything cleaned and got the blinds open before we left the house a little late, a little before 7am. Of course, we didn’t realize that the highway we take was down to one lane which was causing lots of traffic even for that early on a Saturday morning. We decided to go through Indianapolis instead of taking the highway around it. We got to the airport, parked the truck at 7:38am, and got to shuttle stop 22 right before the first bus came.
IMG_0633.jpg

They drove right past us with an announcement that they were full. I was starting to get a little worried because I know early in the morning the Indy airport will only have one side of the TSA security open which will cause longer lines. YIKE! The next bus was only about 4 minutes later and we got into the airport to find the line was bad but not the worst I have seen it. We got through TSA by 8:18 and made our way to our gate.
IMG_0634.jpg

Yes, we are Indianapolis Colts fans!

Of course, our gate was the furthest one away but we made it right as they were calling Boarding Group 3, and we were group 4 so it was a sigh of relief from me that we made it and weren’t the last. They made me measure my new bag because they thought it was too big. It’s a joke that I get a new bag for every trip, I mean they aren’t wrong hahaha it fit just fine, so I got to keep my $50 or whatever I would have been charged if it didn’t it. They even tried to tell me that I had one too many bags, um….I have 4 people in my group and we have 4 bags.

Our flight was uneventful. Since the kids were going to miss two days of school, I had their teachers put together some worksheets and reading materials for them to do on the planes. They did that first and then I let them watch Leroy and Stitch on my phone. We arrived at MCO and were on the Fonorail by 11:25am to start our vacation!

We held true to our tradition of stopping at Dunkin as soon as we got off the plane. The airport was pretty busy, and we were not able to sit at our usual spot. We found a table in the food court that had two seats available so the kids sat down while Aaron and I stood up and enjoyed our sandwiches. Next we headed to the Halloween Horror Nights Store near terminal B. Our family loves Stranger Things (Sadie is dressing up as Max for Halloween this year and you can see she is wearing her Max sweatshirt this trip) so we had to stop in and see if they had any good merch. I did buy a Stranger Things HHN water bottle because I wanted a refillable bottle for our trip and left the one I was going to bring at home so it worked out.

My step-dad/the kid's PopPop is a big Chicago Bears fan and has always wanted a giant Bear for the front yard. I took this picture and told him we found him the perfect Bear.

By 12:30 we were on the road to our hotel. Kids took a quick nap on the way. Our uber driver was super nice and gave me a couple minutes heads up before we went under the Disney gates to wake the kids so they didn’t miss counting down.

thanks for remembering us! I love reading reports but very seldom reply but love writing TR because I can always go back years and remember the small details I forgot about from our old trips. This was the first trip that we took where I actually took time to put numbers together at the end to know exactly how much we spent for the whole trip.
Following along with you :)
happy you are here

We got to the hotel, but our room wasn’t ready yet, which we were totally ok with since it was only 1ish. We checked our bags with the front desk (we even left CC, Sadie’s very special babydoll) and got an Uber to Animal Kingdom Lodge. We have never been here, and this was a trip of trying new things! As soon as we walked in the door there was a CM with paper and crayons doing rubbing art on the floor. Sadie wanted to participate but Joseph didn’t. I hate that he is getting older and doesn’t want to do those things but I also remember being like that when I was his age.

While Sadie did the art, Joseph and Aaron headed into the gift shop and did some window shopping. We met up with them and I handed out the scavenger hunt I created from watching youtube videos and searching up pictures of the resort. I did this last year with the monorail resorts but that was a little easier because I had been to them before. I wasn’t planning on doing it this trip, but Joseph requested a scavenger hunt about 2 weeks before the trip because he had so much fun last time. I scurried and put one together at work during a few lunch hours at work the week before. Nothing too fancy and I think it was a little too easy for the kids but it was still a fun time. They started in the gift shop and then we made our way outside.

After exploring the Arusha Rock Savanna Overlook we headed inside the lobby to do more hunting.

Picture on the bridge inside. It was fun trying to find the bridge, I think we had to take the elevator like 3 different times to get the floor right. Oh well, we made it! After exploring inside, we headed out to the pool area to hit up the Uzima Savanna Overlook. Sadie wanted to play on the playground for a minute, so Aaron stopped at the bar and grabbed us adults some beverages.

Having a Pina CooLava was on my top 5 for this trip! As soon as the kids saw our drinks, they wanted something too. So back to the pool bar we went. Joseph wanted a Pina Colada and Sadie had a Strawberry one. We were also getting hungry so I placed a mobile order from the Mara while we enjoyed our drinks for pick up anytime before 3:45pm.

After a nice cool down we headed to the overlook to see if we could cross some animals off our list. Unfortunately, the giraffes were pretty far away, but they did have an activity starting in a couple minutes where they make interactive snacks/treats for the giraffes so Sadie helped out with that.

We were all pretty hot and it was about 3:15 now so we headed towards the Mara. It was pretty quiet and empty inside. Aaron ordered the Combination Bowl and it looked amazing! He ate most of it but said the rice’s flavor kind of threw him off. Joseph had a kid’s cheeseburger, while Sadie and I each had a kid’s chicken strips meal. We slowly ate and just enjoyed the beginning of the trip and talked a little about our must do’s for tomorrow. Sadie wanted to meet Mirabel, Joseph wanted to ride Tron and Space Mountain, I wanted to do Enchanted Tales with Belle, and Aaron wanted to ride Big Thunder Mountain. While we were eating I also placed a Shipt order for delivery between 5-6pm. I ordered a case of water, some snacks, sunscreen, and beer for Aaron (mostly so he wouldn’t spend all our money at the hotel bar lol)

On our way to the lobby Sadie thought the door handles looked like phones so she wanted me to take a picture and send it to Gramma. We ordered an uber and waited probably the longest for this Uber compared to all the other times. No biggie, we people watched right outside the front door. When we got back to our hotel, we checked in and were given our keys and grabbed our bags. We were on the 5th floor, room 541 which was the last room before access to the parking garage. All good because we had a pool view and could see the Swan and Dolphin resort from our rooms. I was looking forward to seeing if we could see Epcot’s fireworks that night. My Shipt order was about to be delivered so I got the kid’s swimsuits out and I ran down to meet for the groceries. I waited outside and kept an eye in the lobby because no luggage buggy things were available, and I was starting to panic that I would have to carry a case of water and a 12 pack of beer to our room. Lucky, someone returned one right before my delivery showed up. Just my luck to get the delivery lady that must tell me her whole life sob story. How she was just kicked out of her apartment and has to move into a hotel for $30/night but needs 2 rooms because her kids have so many pets….lizards, frogs, fish, cats, ferrets, and more I can’t remember. She brought her daughter along who unloaded the groceries from the trunk into my buggy. I gave her daughter an extra $5 tip for helping and told her to use it on herself. I told the woman that I had also tipped in the app. I told her I would be sending positive thoughts her way and to take care of herself and kids first. Got the groceries upstairs and I got into my swimsuit so we could head to the pool. We were having a showing at our house and Aaron was glued to our Ring doorbell camera so he could hear what they were saying about the house. Might sound creepy but our house has been on the market for 2 weeks now and still have no legitimate offers. We had a rental company offer us $50,000 less than our asking price and I just laughed at them. I took the kids to the pool while Aaron finished watching the Ring camera. I attempted to put Joseph’s hair up in a ponytail for the pool because I knew it would get in his face.
IMG_0681.jpg

Aaron joined us about 15 minutes later. We spent at least 2 hours at the pool. The kids were on the slide over and over again! It wasn’t very sunny but it was nice enough to enjoy the pool. After chilling at the pool we were hungry again. I suggested that we order DoorDash but Joseph said he wasn’t hungry, so Aaron decided to go to the little pool bar and get a burger for himself and Sadie some chicken fingers. I asked him for chips and quac but he forgot so I just ate some of his fries. I was very determined to get everyone to bed at a decent time because I knew that the next couple of days would consist of early wake up times. I don’t remember what time it was but at some point after the kids were laying down, but not sleeping yet, we could hear fireworks! I ran to the window!!! And there they were! Fireworks but they were not in the direction of Epcot, they were Magic Kingdom!! I was so excited!!!! Sadie on the other hand was tired and said “I’ve seen fireworks before, I’m laying back down.” Joseph and I enjoyed the show for a little while before going to bed. It was a great first day of our mini vacation!!
