    News Morocco Pavilion redevelopment

Its purpose is that it stands as World Showcase's sole representation of the Muslim world and the African continent. Italy too "lacks" an attraction, and no-one is suggesting that's redundant.

    News Morocco Pavilion redevelopment

How on earth could a "reskin" achieve this? They'd have to knock down the minaret and massive archway to even begin to untether the pavilion from Morocco. The architecture is not generic.

That would be a very strange perception indeed given how much they've already changed the it.

There's zero need for ideological trolling. It adds absolutely nothing to the discussion.

Yet people don’t seem to mind that recycled animatronics made up a huge proportion of Disneyland’s Splash Mountain. Indeed, Tony Baxter has acknowledged that the IP was selected precisely to find an appropriate theme for those very animatronics.

    News Morocco Pavilion redevelopment

The part that really confuses me is why they thought the existing tiles couldn’t be salvaged. Sure, there were patches of damage, but well-made ceramics (which those were) are extremely hardy, capable of being maintained for literally centuries even outdoors.

    News Morocco Pavilion redevelopment

Sure, it really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of world affairs, but in terms of Disney news, yes, it’s a scandal.

    News Morocco Pavilion redevelopment

Aladdin has been there since the ’90s. In this thread and others, you keep overlooking the fact that the architecture of the pavilion quotes famous landmarks of Morocco. They may not read as specifically Moroccan to you, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less iconic of the country than the...

    News Morocco Pavilion redevelopment

Zellij done well (to a standard similar to what it would have been replacing) isn’t cheap, but Disney has more than enough money. I don’t understand the second part of your post. The pavilion is still unmistakably Moroccan in its architecture and decoration (apart from the disastrous new tilework).

I doubt Epcot is a particularly pressing concern for him. It would be great, however, if someone with a relatively high profile and some sort of claim to a cultural connection could publicly shame Disney about this.

They have a gallery in West Hollywood, for goodness' sake! https://zellijgallery.com/Moroccan-tile/large-zellij-panels-and-fountains/ It would have been so easy for Disney to do this right.

    News Morocco Pavilion redevelopment

I very much doubt it. The good thing is that the zellij tile tradition remains very much alive, which means that it would at least be possible to revert back to the old aesthetic should the pavilion ever come under the care of someone who actually knows what they're doing.

Photos from as recently as 2023 show that the tiles were in good shape. Had the powers that be wanted to reuse them, they certainly could have. Alas, they decided to cut corners (and get rid of genuine art) instead.

    News Morocco Pavilion redevelopment

I really wish Disney would just leave well enough alone. They seem intent on tinkering with this pavilion, and it’s always for the worse.

    News Morocco Pavilion redevelopment

It is a very unfortunate downgrade indeed. And needless too, as the existing tiles were more than salvageable.

In the next picture, the purple on the window frames appears more as you describe. Maybe they’ll “distress” it on the doors too?
