    Riots & Protests

I missed this when you posted it yesterday. My thoughts are that such criticisms are usually given an unhelpful and reductive “Clash of Civilisations” framing, pitting Judeo-Christian enlightenment against Muslim backwardness. They give a flattened and monolithic picture of Islam, one sustained...

Praise from whom? I don’t recall anyone—much less a prominent political figure—telling them they’re loved and special.

    COVID-19 Vaccination

If you stopped to consider the rationale behind the early vaccination of inmates (along with others living in congregate settings), you’d understand why it benefits society as a whole. Preventing the virus from running rampant in contagion hotspots is an important step in keeping the health...

Thank you for sharing. This was harrowing but important to read.

    Riots & Protests

Which is the only way we can address these issues. All of us stand to be more honest with ourselves. For what it’s worth, I agree with you that such a person may well be decent. It can be very difficult for people to recognise, much less interrogate, their prejudices if they’ve never known any...

    Riots & Protests

This speaks to my point. I consider you a thoroughly decent person, but I also think you’re too quick to accept Shapiro’s explanation, despite the self-evidently problematic nature of what he tweeted (and despite the fact that his initial explanation was quite different from what he later...

    Riots & Protests

I don't see how any of this applies to the two tweets of Shapiro's that I shared, both of which are blanket condemnations of entire groups of people (first all Arabs, then "narrowed down" to all Palestinians). He is an anti-Arab bigot, and I will continue to call him out as such.

    Riots & Protests

That he said what he said in the first place is the issue. He has never truly apologised for his remarks, merely tried to walk them back when challenged.

    Riots & Protests

Let me add that I don’t wish to downplay the extent to which other forms of racism and bigotry have been, and continue to be, normalised. The fact that Trump could become president is proof enough that people are far too ready to turn a blind eye to multiple kinds of hate speech.

    Riots & Protests

Yes. You’re probably aware of the following tweet, which he later tried to explain as really referring only to the Palestinian leadership: Yet his actual follow-up at the time was this: Whether he meant all Arabs or “just” all Palestinians, his remarks were abhorrent. That’s because...

    Riots & Protests

As I said, his racism towards Arabs should long ago have disqualified him from mainstream platforms. Why people continue to parrot, quote, or follow him I'll never understand.

    Riots & Protests

I mean, we're both posting about it, so the question applies as much to you as it does to me. It applies most of all to Shapiro, however. Couldn't he have used that tweet to comment on something that actually mattered?

    Riots & Protests

If you haven't seen it already, I suggest you watch this interview with Andrew Neil, a conservative British journalist who really exposed Shapiro's fragility: (For those who don't know, this combative, devil's advocate style of interviewing is the norm in the UK. Shapiro clearly didn't...

Perhaps she really was just asking about generic zip ties. Truth be told, before reading some of the posts here, I didn't think of them as a common household item (though my parents have a supply of them back in London). So yes, she may well have incorrectly assumed that zip ties of any kind...

Fair enough. I've mentioned his anti-Arab rhetoric before, but before you were posting here.
