The Troubled History of Epcot’s Abandoned World Showcase

Fun game: let's imagine that we could fill the remaining eight World Showcase slots, ignoring Sommerhaus, Ratatouille, and the Events Pavilion. What would you eight be?
Mine:
1) Brazil
2) Spain
3) Australia
4) Egypt
5) India
6) Thailand
7) Greece
8) Switzerland
I'm also open to Peru, Israel, Chile, and Korea.
Israel, Brazil and Chile had small country presentations complete with CMs from those countries at the WSC building between UK and France in the late 1990s. The location was called Millenimum Village.

I enjoyed the Millenium Village when I visited it all those years ago. I remember going through an area simulating the different seasons in one part using visual and audio effects along with temperature changes. They had some neat exhibits in there, it's a real shame that space is so rarely used by the general day guest any longer.

I think that building is used for private conventions and also for Food and Wine Party for the Senses which is a food and drink fest for a few hours each night for about $150-300 per guest. Ticket to the park is extra.

Ah, discussions about the World Showcase that never was and the pavilions that one day may be.

On the one hand, a chance to lament World Showcase's dimming mission to promote global tolerance and understanding. On the other, a forum to talk about all the nationalities you don't like and why.

You could add two more spots by building new pavilions at the Odyssey and the Starbucks sites.

World showcase is such a wasted opportunity its such a shame that its been left for the most part for years

I’d love to see more done - attractions in the counties without them and some new nations added to the family. With animal Kingdom I think equatorial africa would be a bit redundant especially as a virtual safari could complete with the real animals at DAK.

It would also be great to add some exotic nations into the mix to balance out the European bias. I’d love to see Thailand, Australia, somewhere in South America and maybe joint carribean or Polynesian nation pavillions

Almost as bad as the many obnoxious Americans who flood Europe for the summer season.

Stones and glass houses, no?
Believe it not, having lived in Europe for about 6 years, most Americans in Europe are actually very well behaved. Our most boorish representatives tend to either stay in the US or go to the Caribbean. The worst that can probably be said about those of us who visit Europe is that we haven't grasped the concept of an "inside voice".

Most of the infamous travelers in Europe are actually from other parts of Europe. Brits have a particularly bad reputation in southern Spain, Greece and Prague. Italians are known for not understanding the concept of "wait your turn in line". The Dutch are known for taking over every camping site on the continent.

BTW, I didn't watch the videos, but was it pointed out that the reason why most of the planned countries in the World Showcase never materialized is because their governments turned down Disney's request for sponsorship?

Governments or companies from other countries were anticipated to heavily fund pavilions. Zero governments ended up sponsoring pavilions on opening day, and they could only secure a couple of foreign companies. The lack of funds definitely contributed to everything being scaled back. It is also no coincidence that Morocco was built as the first expansion and is sponsored by the government/King of Morocco.

I'm honestly surprised seeing how the basic financial concept for most of this park was clearly failing at the outset that no one hit the breaks. I'm glad it exists and glad I got to experience it when it was young and new, but it makes its stunted progression wholly unsurprising.

I'm rather happy that the Venezuela Pavilion never got built. Lord knows those socialist loonies that took over and ruined the country might try to claim that WDW is partly theirs.

Venezuelan culture is amazing though. And we have China. And if you think Norway isn't democratic socialist, I have a bridge to sell you.

No worse than than the American teenagers in the parks. At least the Brazilians don't say "f***" every other word.
Sorry, but Ive been at WDW on many occasions when Pee Wee Football, Cheerleading competitions, band competitions, end of school trips, and other youth groups have been in large groupings in the parks. Yes all teens no matter where they are from can be obnoxious and out of hand when chaperones do not do their jobs but never have I encountered a situation that was anywhere near as offensive and bad mannered as many of the Brazilian groups Ive run into. I'll concede they are not all bad but the groups that are have been over the top have been excessively impolite and rude with no one willing to control their behavior.

I do not think WDW cares about the politics of other countries that much when adding them to the World Showcase. They considered adding the Soviet Union in the 80s, which really says something...

Also, the idea that Norway is somewhat of a socialist country is just a long-held myth. They rank 26th on the economic freedom ranking, ahead of countries like Japan and South Korea. Socialism is defined as, "A political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole." Having the vast majority of their industries be private companies conflicts with this definition.

Booooo.
Brazil would have been great.
I love those tour groups...they are always happy and loud......but happy.
I was born in Brazil and lived there for 1 year of my life before moving to America. Yeah we are loud and proud of our country. Mom lived there until she moved here in Florida in her early 20's. We love America, but we also love where we came from as well. I would love a pavilion for Brazil as well as Australia would be a good addition.

My 8 wishlist, in no particular order:

Benelux

Thailand

Switzerland

India

Argentina

Spain

Egypt

Russia

I would also like to see Australia and Brazil, but these would be better fits for Animal Kingdom.

Realistically, though, if you look at the available space from Google Earth, they only have room for one or two additional pavilions. Maybe three if they moved a whole lot of logistics and support buildings.

1. For all their fluff and feathers, China doesn’t actually believe in Communism as a valid economic model. They’re essentially Randian in their capitalism, which is why they’ve got so many pollution problems.

2. Norway isn’t actually socialist, and the vaunted “Nordic Model” is actually capitalist in nature, only with insane tax levies.
Case in point, Norway actively dissuades its people from owning automobiles by taxing them up to 100% of the value of the car.

Venezuela is like neither of those. The Socialists took over, nationalized their petroleum industry, kicked out the company managers who knew what they were doing, and installed idiots who were loyal to “the party” to run them. (Think Donald Trump installing old whatsername as Secretary of Education....only she’ll be replaced once Trump is gone, and the DOE alone won’t collapse the entire country)

Problem is, these idiots had no idea what they were doing and promptly collapsed the oil industry, thus wrecking the entire country’s economy.
