It also calls for Anaheim Arena Management to take over operations of the troubled Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) train station, which has operated on a deficit since opening in 2014. Under the proposal, AAM would assume all responsibility for operating losses. Beginning in 2017, the city has paid the facility’s deficit – averaging $2.5 million a year – from its general fund.

“It’s a very big deal and a good deal,” Tait said.

Ducks’ Proposal

The 820-acre area around the Honda Center, Angel Stadium and ARTIC is known as the Platinum Triangle, a planning area with nearly $1.5 billion in new mixed-use developments in the pipeline.

Current city planning documents allow for 17,501 residential units, 4.8 million square feet of commercial space, 9.2 million square feet of office development and 1.5 million square feet of institutional uses, like universities, government or hospital facilities.

At the council meeting, city staff said the proposed Honda Center development would be modeled after entertainment complexes like L.A. Live, which is located in downtown Los Angeles and includes the Staples Center, LA Convention Center, a retail plaza, hotels, condominiums, concert theaters, restaurants and more.

Other proposed terms of the agreement include:

  • Require AAM to assume responsibility for providing 3,900 parking spots for Honda Center visitors.
  • Changing a profit-sharing agreement for the Honda Center so that the city receives half of all profits after a $6 million threshold. The current lease gives the city 20 percent of all profits after $12 million, but because the Honda Center has never generated $12 million in profits, the city has never collected any extra revenue.
  • Create a profit-sharing agreement for ARTIC where the city receives 60 percent of all revenue and AAM receives 40 percent.
  • Create a new digital advertising sign along the 57 Freeway at ARTIC

Through spokeswoman Erika Hall, Anaheim Arena Management issued a brief statement and declined to comment on the deal specifically.

“We’re excited to work with the City of Anaheim as we continue to plan for the future of the Anaheim Ducks and Honda Center,” said Hall. “We are always looking to improve the fan experience and bring Anaheim the very best in world-class entertainment.”

Councilman Stephen Faessel, who otherwise called the proposal a “great deal,” questioned why the deal includes the sale of a parking lot across from the Honda Center by ARTIC without a formal bidding process where other developers could also bid for the property.

“ARTIC is not that far from Angel Stadium, and now we’re likely going to have to negotiate a deal with the Angels, how do we know the Angels won’t give us a better deal?” Faessel said.

Tait said selling the ARTIC lot to Anaheim Arena Management would make it easier to construct a proposed pedestrian bridge over Katella Avenue, so the city would not have to negotiate with multiple entities to construct the bridge.<<

Looking forward to also getting more Angel Stadium news. So with this new deal with AAM, im assuming there will be no new arena in the near future but just more renovations. At this time they are updating to all black seats at Honda Center but for some weird reason it will take 2 years which is extremely slow.

What would the boundary of the "Platinum Triangle" be? I look at a drawing of that area and guessing Orange Freeway, Santa Ana River, and Ball road.

On Katella I believe it begins at Honda Center and ends at the on ramp of the 5 North. On St. College it starts around the 5 off ramp and ends around Cerritos.

Interesting!

And what an utter disaster the ARTIC has been; a giant, gleaming, government funded albatross built on lies and Climate Change dreams. How clever of Mayor Tait to dump that taxpayer funded disaster as cleanly as he can.

The northern edge is quite a bit south of Ball Road actually. The Santa Ana Freeway is the western boundary, and the Orange Freeway slices through the east but it continues on to the Santa Ana Riverbed.

Looking forward to also getting more Angel Stadium news.

The Angels don't want to start anything until the new council takes over. (Next year)

As they say, elections matter.

And what is wild is the internal polling from multiple camps are all over the place.

The Progressive Unions are not happy, but as much as I can say publicly.

The Construction Unions still think they need to spend more.

The Police and Fire Department Unions also feel the need to invest more.

But when this came across my desk, I broke out into a big laughing fit...

So Disney and Angels are putting the public on notice that they better vote correctly for investment in Anaheim. Anaheim is such a homeless dump. What a wrong turn.

Trust me I am working hard to get the ship pointed in the right direction. One of the candidates called me to discuss the Homeless issue this afternoon.

The conversation is off the record, but long and had some hopefully good news.

A couple of weeks to go.

Las Vegas is open for a MLB team. They’re expecting the Raiders, which opened up Las Vegas for more pro sports teams.

“The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, is involved in another rumor about a possible sale. However, the particularly juicy tidbit to this rumor is that the off-Strip property may be torn down and replaced with a new Major League Baseball stadium.”

Las Vegas is biting off WAY MORE than it can chew. The casino business is a shadow of what it was 10-15 years ago and the entire city is supported by nothing but housing prices.

I hope Anaheim city leadership treats the Angels just like Walt Disney Co. and tells the baseball team “no more handouts.”

The Angels told the city they want out of their stadium lease after the 2019 season. Supposedly, the city-owned Angel Stadium doesn’t meet its fans’ needs. Nobody’s that dumb. It’s clear this is a ploy to make baseball in Anaheim more profitable for billionaire owner Arte Moreno.

If I were, say, the god of Anaheim … I’d quickly take the Angels up on their lease termination and tell them today, without any negotiations, they should have their bags packed once the baseball season ends in 2019.

I wouldn’t see this as Anaheim “losing” the Angels. I’d view it as the city trading an aging veteran for more promising prospects in the real estate game.

Now you might be thinking, “Jon, didn’t you recently write that the city was foolish for hardball tactics with Disney?”

Yes, I think Anaheim goofed in essentially rejecting plans for a luxury hotel at Disneyland’s gates that would have yielded the city $100 million-plus in hotel taxes over 20 years. Killing the hotel was a lose-lose for the company and the city from what could have been a mutually beneficial partnership.

But I’ve long believed professional sports stadiums are almost universally “wins” for rich team owners and “losers” for taxpayers who build, own and maintain such facilities.

And in Southern California, circa 2018, the Angel Stadium site — with a hip urban feel that’s close to mass-transit and three freeways — is real estate gold the city can mine in numerous ways far more lucrative than owning a sports stadium.

Plus, the Angels under Moreno’s watch have not been a perfect tenant.<<

Moreno doesn't have a choice and he knows it. Orange County is the only place that can support that team. Look at the disaster in football where ratings are down significantly as well as game attendance and Spanos made the foolish move to relocate the Chargers to LA.

You say that as if it’s a bad thing. The casino business has retrenched due to inevitable competition from casinos in California and elsewhere. You can’t put the genie back in the bottle. Las Vegas correctly diversified to restaurants and entertainment so tourists can spend their cash on other things than gambling. There’s more for families to do in Vegas today than their brief entry in theme parks that didn’t work.

Any big city need pro sports. MLB should find a home in Vegas. Increasingly, the off strip casinos are no longer maintaining business. They are failing quickly like the Lucky Dragon. Rio won’t last much longer.

Anyways, Resorts World casino will open soon. Finally a modern resort will open in quite a long time and the former Fountainebleau will open as The Drew.

Moreno has many choices. Anaheim isn’t like Boston or New York and there is already a team in Los Angeles playing in the World Series. This may be a negotiation. Otherwise they won’t be able to renegotiate until 2028. At worse, they can move to another city that will appreciate them better. This is about Dueling Morenos.

Why would anyone want to live in a house between two of the busiest freeways in the world?

OK, wow, so much to catchup on.

First off, regarding theHomeless issue. Anaheim settled with the Homeless Advocates last Friday, and the news was released this morning, to avoid the election.

https://www.anaheim.net/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1329

And happy to say the ship is back on course, even though we were outspent. Too tired to tell the stories from the last two weeks, especially yesterday. My insider network is larger than ever, and the info was used wisely.

As for the Angels, looks likesome sort of opening dialogue will happen soon with city staff, to have some sort of starting offer/request ready for Mayor.

But I can tell you right now, Harry Sidhu will not accept a deal that isn't good for the city, and will let the Angels leave if terms can be negotiated. A short term extension might happen to allow enough time for a long term deal to be worked out.

But we are at ground zero right now, and nobody knows yet which path to take....

Forgot about this thread, first off, thank you MyDude… It is strange, this new sort of life I am in now..... Guess that what happens when you get old, your memories are worth something.

I have mentioned the Angels in the ongoing Living Wage and Anaheim politics thread.

Amazing I have been pretty right on regarding what I had said in this thread..

But in short, a fresh restart from scratch will happen between the city and the Angels during the 14 month extension that will be approved on Tuesday.

No guarantee the two parties will come to an agreement, but it looks good.

I saw the opening line on total wins per MLB team, and the Angels were in the middle of the pack. The Astros were projected to have the most wins this season, which isn't good.
