Angels tell Anaheim they're opting out of their lease on Angel Stadium

So guess what the Ange;s want... The Land.

They will build the Ball[park.

Looks like they will build the Ballpark, though with around 35,000 seats, a lot less than the current version.

The new Stadium would be built to the North West on the parking Lot where the Grove of Anaheim is, and after it opens, the old Stadium gets torn down, and replaced with parking and new development built by the Angels, which will use the profits to help offset the costs of the new ballpark.
Darkbeer, would the Angels organization be subject to the ALWI? Either by virtue of the current deal they sought to build a new ballpark, or for when Anaheim kicked in for some of the cost of the remodel of Angels Stadium in the 90's (I don't know the exact terms of that deal, but could it count as a subsidy)?

I don't know what candidate Sidhu is talking about, "fighting to keep the Angels" - the Angels have nowhere to go. There isn't another pro baseball stadium available anywhere in the area. Angels already tried negotiating with Tustin, who rightly told them no, so Anaheim has already called this bluff.

Angels originally wanted Anaheim to pay for their stadium renovations, but cities nowadays are wise to the fact that this is a dumb move. That land is probably more profitable as something other than a baseball stadium, so Anaheim has the benefit of leverage here.

Las Vegas is open for a MLB team. They’re expecting the Raiders, which opened up Las Vegas for more pro sports teams.

“The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, is involved in another rumor about a possible sale. However, the particularly juicy tidbit to this rumor is that the off-Strip property may be torn down and replaced with a new Major League Baseball stadium.”

As a long-term die-hard Angel fan, I'm not sweating this at all. Either they remain in Anaheim (probable),

or end up in a new stadium somewhere else in So Cal.
No worries.

Nothing can rain on my parade after they finally got rid of their chronically underachieving manager 16 years after their last real playoff success.
I appreciate Mike Scioscia for the 2002 World Title.
Since then...........crickets.

Good ole Anaheim city government... built a hemorrhaging transit center (what is it again, the actual number passengers passing through is a 10th the original estimate?), has ticked off one golden goose to make it pout in the corner and do its own thing (Disney), and ticked off the other golden goose into potentially leaving (Angels).

How is the relationship with the Ducks going? Should upset them as well...

Portland is also desperate to land a MLB team, and has an active and well funded committee trying to lure a team for their new stadium next door to the MODA Center where the NBA Trailblazers play.

Phase 1 is Portland installs a Salt & Straw store in Downtown Disney and lulls Orange County locals into complacency with their $6 scoops of Lavender Honey ice cream, and Phase 2 is they kidnap the Angels to a new hipster stadium up in Portland.

They'll change the team name from the Anaheim Angels to the Portland Pioneers, and that'll be the end of it.

Is Phase 3 to lure Disney into building some type of resort?

I’m hoping that either the A’s or Rays are unable to secure funding/approval for a new stadium and are relocated to Portland. The Portland Diamond Project (including Russel Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks) has outlined a plan to secure private funding to build a stadium in downtown Portland. Last I heard in the spring, they had narrowed it down to two locations: one next to Moda, and one a little further away.

As for my beloved Angels, they would be delusional to leave Anaheim! I suspect they will return to the negotiating table for a new lease once Mayor Tait is a goner.

I will tell you what the Angels want.

Not a new lease for an old school oversized stadium.

They want a new Ballpark.

If the city of Anaheim, or other Southland city can deliver the land, they will take a decent deal.

A's will only move to a bigger market or market of the same size. Basically unless its Vegas or Sacramento they aren't moving out of the Bay Area. The Howard Terminal project is likely the one that is going to move forward. If not they'll fall back to using the existing parking lot to build a new stadium once the Raiders have gone to Vegas.

Too many Bay Area Billionaires want to see the A's stay in the Bay Area for it not to happen.

They play in a football stadium that not even the football team wants to play in. Between the Raiders and the Warriors leaving, the A’s had better figure out what they’re doing. They’ve been spinning their tires on a new stadium for years.

They had to wait until the Raiders made a decision before they could do anything at the existing site. So it was either find something else in Oakland or leave the area, and they really don't want to leave the area. Al Davis really screwed the A's when he negotiated with Oakland for the Raiders to come back. Basically the Raiders held all the cards with the Coliseum, the A's couldn't do anything to the Coliseum without Raiders approval. And if the Raiders weren't getting a new Stadium at the Coliseum site, they weren't going to let the A's get one. Once the Raiders opted out of the Coliseum deal and decided to move to Vegas the A's could negotiate a deal for Coliseum land if they couldn't find a new site.

So its either Howard Terminal or the existing Coliseum parking lot for a new ballpark, with Howard Terminal in the lead. We'll know by the end of the year which it is.

Or the Angels could, you know, just pay a fair price to buy the land that they want.

The figure starts at $225 million from an appraisal four years ago, so I expect it to be higher now. And Tait is quoted as saying he's fine selling it at the price it's worth.

The Angels opted out of their lease with the city of Anaheim on Tuesday, setting the stage for another round of negotiations over whether the team remains in their longtime host city or finds a new home elsewhere in Southern California.
Angel Stadium, which opened in 1966, is the fourth-oldest ballpark in the major leagues, behind Boston’s Fenway Park, Chicago’s Wrigley Field and Dodger Stadium.
“As we look to the future, we need the ability to continue to deliver a high-quality fan experience beyond what the original lease allows,” Angels president John Carpino said in a statement. “It is important that we look at all our options and how we can best serve our fans now and in the future.”
Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait, who led the drive against a tentative 2013 agreement between the city and the team for an Angel Stadium renovation, is in his final term. Voters in Anaheim will elect a new mayor and three new council members next month.

Angels spokeswoman Marie Garvey said the decision to opt out was not meant to influence voters. She said the lease required the team to opt out no later than Tuesday or wait until 2028 for another chance to do so.
“It’s today, or 10 years from now,” Garvey said. “There’s no option in between.”
Garvey would not say whether remaining in Anaheim was the Angels’ first choice.
“We’ll sit down with the new mayor and city council,” she said. “We also are going to look at all our options.”
The Angels ended negotiations with Anaheim in 2014. They explored options for new ballparks in Los Angeles, Carson and Irvine, but prioritized Tustin because of its proximity to the current stadium and fan base.
The sides are believed to have focused on a stadium that would have seated about 37,000 and cost about $700 million. Tustin officials have said they will not provide taxpayer funding for stadium construction.
Garvey said the Angels understand they are unlikely to find a city in Southern California willing to pay for a new ballpark.
“We understand the realities of California,” she said. “There is a significant investment involved either way.”

C'mon out to Corona/Eastvale Angels. I'm sure we can find a spot out here for you.

I thought they were the 'Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Greater Orange County Area'? Maybe I got a couple of things mixed together there... ;)

Just when you think things can't get worse for the Anaheim City Council...
