Best approach for securing dining reservations?

In preparations for our next trip, we attempted to make dining reservations at some hard to get locations without success. We tried at 60 days, plus the 5 days of the trip, and was unable to get a few restaurants we wanted to experience. Is there a specific time when checking for cancellations that offers the best chance of success? I understand closer to the day availability increases, but are there any approaches that work up to that point? Checking in the morning, or late at night, reservations released later, or is it near-real-time, and you just have to get lucky and get a reservation when one is cancelled?

Not sure if this is allowed but mousedining allows up to 5 free alerts sent to your email which definitely helped. Also checking every now and then cant hurt but thats like playing the lotto for most part in advance. Once it gets closer as you said to the date i would be checking daily multiple times. Its a quick easy search in the app. Generally i would do it early morning a few times during the day and at night with some success and while i was just down there and in past years a day or 2 before things definitely seemed to always popup. Garden Grille was the only issue i had this year bc of the F&W offering but they did have walk up available when i was inEpcot one if the days i checked.

I wholeheartedly recommend the reservation finder on touringplans. Google those and it should come right up. You need an account but they have a free one. We’ve had very good luck with it. It will send you an email and text alert when the reservation you’re looking for becomes available.

How well does this work? How long does it stay available for? By the time the reservation finder alerts of an opening, and I get the alert, then try to reserve, is it possible the reservation would be taken by somebody else by then?

Yes it is possible. The alert is sent to everyone who has a request for the same time slot.
But always try via MDE too if you find the link unsuccessful.

I like Mouskepros. $6 a month, unlimited searches, text alerts. It’s gotten me everything I want my past two trips, and that’s with a party of 10, so I’m looking for two tables every time.

It doesn’t really blow up until a week or so before my trip, and then the alerts go crazy as people change their plans (to the point where I need to silence the texts at night so they don’t wake me up). When so many alerts start pouring in, I haven’t had any difficulty grabbing the reservations, as long as I act fast and go on MDE as soon as I get the text.

Definitely use a service like mouse dining. You have to be very quick to grab those reservations though.. On a side note, are you traveling with children? If not, any restaurant with a bar will have full service there. We rarely make reservations for anything at disney springs because of that fact. The bars also get busy so you may have to wait for somewhere like homecomin but its only two of us and we're obviously adults and dont bring kids otherwise that wouldn't work.

Yeah hate to keep posting this over and over but if it helps someone.......

do the dining alerts. I did paid mousedining -50 alerts email plus text ($8/mo) and here we are mid month and I'm about done with my best choices. Best 8 bucks ive spent on this trip. The txt was key because others are using alerts and checking too so you gotta click right away and even then no guarantees. If you miss. Keep waiting and trying when they come in. Eventually you hit and it's a great feeling. I also did free alerts at wdwpassport, touringplans, and mouseseats but being free those were email only and they didn't factor in ultimately to my success.

I also checked manually a lot but never hit on anything. My experience testing with free alerts awhile back was like another poster it was most successful a week or so out. But set them all up, be patient and it works! I'm about to cancel my paid service as Sept closes out and focus on other areas as dining is all set!!!!

What is the size of your group? On our last family trip, I had to split up to get a couple places we wanted.

It can be hit or miss. It can also be harder depending on the time of year you are going. Keep trying with frequency, different times of day and evening. With crowds increasing, the demand for seating is now more competitive especially for the newer or most highly rated spots that everyone is hoping to get. Even with the various dining alerts you may miss out. Theres no guarantee youll get everything you want. Patience, persistence and good fortune and you may win out eventually.

Just saw the day I'm at MK (one of the few that week it doesn't close early (6pm??? Lol) for a ticketed event is completely booked for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have a very late lunch reservation but this tells me the park is going to be a mob scene. So much for lesser crowds in November.

I heard that. Tempting but thats really disappointing to me. 6PM???? And no fireworks/castle show? I elected to go the night it closes at 10 to get the whole experience and night time etc. But I know the crowds will be huge.
