Trip Report 2018-2019 A Year in the Land (Disneyland)...a multi-trip report

Hello and welcome to my trip report for my year as an annual passholder to Disneyland. Me (Amy) and my husband (Brad) have been passholders of both Disneyland and Walt Disney World but this year we decided to be exclusive to just the Land. It was a little painful to give up going to WDW this year, we consider it our home park but we also enjoy Disneyland too. I think I have a little more fondness to it than Brad, but anyway.... So why are we passholders for DL exclusively this year instead of WDW or both parks. Well financially it didn't necessarily make sense. Brad is a big Star Wars fan and I'm a big Disney nerd so with Galaxy's Edge opening in the Land earlier than WDW that was a draw. And the D23 Expo is in Anaheim again this year so it checked boxes for both of us.

So I'm going to begin this report a little in the past, 2018, that's right so long ago! :) We traveled to Disneyland over Thanksgiving 2018 and bought our annual passes so that is where we will start the trip report.

Upcoming trips:
A. late March 2019
B. possibly (most likely) a solo trip for me over Easter 2019 (Why solo?...well Brad is a pastor and the congregation kind of expects him to be there over Easter. I'm a teacher and have a nice little break over Easter and the hubs is too busy over Holy week and Easter so he won't really notice I'm gone.)
C. Late June 2019 to celebrate our anniversary and birthdays all in June and in the same week. This trip will include Los Angeles, Sequoia National Park, Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park & Palm Springs as well as Disneyland (and perhaps if rumors are true our first entrance into Galaxy's Edge)
D. our last trip late August for Disneyland and D23 Expo

By the way...if any of you are in Disneyland when our paths cross it would be cool to have any meet ups or say hi. I've met a few awesome WDWMagic members in Walt Disney World and it has been so cool. Don't be afraid to say hi if you see us walking around too!:)

So let's start the first leg of the trip report: November 20-25 2018

Tuesday November 20
Brad and I both had a full day at work. My day should have been full of students but since it is Deer Hunting week (or at least the big gun hunting week) in Wisconsin and Thanksgiving week, our district gives the kids the week off and teachers report for two days of inservice. So it wasn't a hectic day for me. However there was a little kerfuffle in the plan for today. It involved our beloved and spoiled minature schnauzer Kapono.
IMG_5529.JPG

My boss said that we could leave at 3pm instead of 3:30pm so hubby picked me up on the way to drop off Kapono at the kennel. Kapono has only spent 2 days ever in this kennel (good experience) usually she stays with my sister but she was unable to care for her this time. So it was the first time Kapono was going to be spending an extended time in a kennel. So we arrived at the kennel and no one is there, even though it is check-in time and the main building for the kennel is unlocked. So we go inside and wait thinking that maybe the owner is just busy at the house and will be out soon. After 5 minutes no one came even though dogs were barking in her house and in the kennel. So hubs gives her a call. And in the mean time I'm concerned that she left the kennel unlocked! Anyway, the lady was surprised we were calling and had lost track of time and was an hour away from the kennel. But more importantly she was surprised that we were there because she hadn't written down our reservation!!!! Hubs had the email confirmation though. Luckily she had one run left. She said it was luckily for us, but really it was lucky for her!!!! I don't know what we would have done if that run wouldn't have been available though. Although hubs said one of our church members would have pitched in for us. So I took Kapono out into the fenced in yard area and when I let her in she happily ran into the open caged run. I was glad she seemed happy to be there but a little concerned now at the professionalism of the kennel owner. Fast forward to the end of our trip when we picked her up...Kapono had been a good girl there and was safe (and clean). So it all worked out and this over-protective dog mom was happy, and the kennel owner apologized a few times.

So anyway, after we dropped Kapono off we drove up to Minneapolis to the airport for our flight. We ended up being pretty early for our flight but we'd rather wait safely at the airport than be stressed out in traffic. Check in and security took less than 15 minutes so we had a decent meal and drinks at the Minnesota Wild (our favorite hockey team) teamed restaurant). We hadn't planned on eating here but I guess it was fate since we were wearing our Disney Minnesota Wild themed shirts.

The seats we were in used to be 1st class but now the company is going more the Spirit route and these seats were $45 more to the base ticket price. So for that we thought it was a deal to have slightly bigger seats and more foot space for the flight.
IMG_5766.JPG

Adios Minnesota!
IMG_5767.JPG

We flew into LAX and took an Uber to Anaheim. The traffic was a little heavy in the arrival/departure area so it took our Uber driver a little while about 10-15 minutes to get to us, but it didn't seem too bad. We made it to Anaheim in about 40 minutes (our driver was a speed demon) but that was okay with us. We checked into our hotel the Best Western Park Place Inn, literally across the street from the entrance as seen below. We went to the ticket booth and purchased/cashed in 4 day park hoppers for our annual passes with Max pass and gleefully entered Disneyland with about 40 minutes until park close!

There was about 15 mintues before official rope drop so we wandered around Town Square a little bit. If you look close in this picture you can see that the lamp that is always lit in Walt's Firehouse apartment is replaced during the holidays with a Christmas tree.
IMG_6205.JPG

We also took some that 15 minutes to meet up with some of the characters around.

In the small amount of time in the 15 minutes before we were let into the park and official rope drop we met up with Pluto, Goofy, Minnie and Chip. We also witnessed the cutest encounter with a little girl and Chip.

As we were walking over to meet with Chip a little girl (as seen in the picture below holding a brown bag) gave Chip a jar of peanuts. He jumped about with joy and hugged the girl a couple times. Then he ran around in circles and then ran backstage and quickly reappeared and kept hugging the girl he was so excited over the peanuts! It was cute and funny. I'd never seen anyone give a character a gift so it was fun to see the interaction.

As we got done meeting Chip we decided to take the trolley down to the castle. As we were walking to the trolley we heard the opening announcement. So in the short amount of time we had already spent in the park we had already had a fantastic time. It was shaping up to be a great day!

A couple more trolley Town Square pictures. Odd thought...I just noticed now that the star on top of the tree looks like the star I have on top of our main Christmas tree at home.

After encountering the Mad Hatter we had to take a spin on the tea cups. Looks like Brad was hooked on the cups, he went on again! He isn't one to riding over and over again like I am but he can handle one spin now, at least on the slow Disneyland cups.

We made our way over to small world again and I stopped to take pictures of the themed wreaths in the promande space going to the attractions.

And some more pictures of it's a small world holiday. Sorry if I post too many small world holiday pictures, I am just enchanted with the detail they put into the overlay.

I really like this nod to Santa Lucia, when I was a kid a group from St. Olaf college came to our church to perform a special service with a focus on Santa Lucia. The image of the ladies with the wreaths with candles on their heads stuck with me and it is something I look back on fondly. Our church didn't have a lot of special services so it was a big thing at the time.

As we left the show building for its a small world the train was in the station, again, I really should have gotten a picture. Maybe in March.

After small world we went to the Matterhorn to use our first fast pass and immediately made one for Big Thunder that would start in a minute after we made it. The the way, we love Max pass and was glad we paid to include it with our pass.

I can't wait to try this place in March. I hear they have an orange whip, and being a big fan of the citrus swirl (which is not available in Disneyland) I want to try it. I know the orange whip is available at the MK but when I can get the actual citrus swirl why bother.

Brad loves Big Thunder Mountain, but he was especially pleased with the glimpses into Star Wars land.

A few more pictures of the Disneyland Band with special guest....Belle. After the band we decided to grab lunch at the Plaza before our tour. We were taking the 12:45 Holidaytime at Disneyland tour. The line to get in the Plaza was longer than we expected and took longer than we expected too. We were worried about checking in on time for the tour but we held on to the thought of fried chicken and yule log. Let's just say I think it was the fastest we have ever eaten. The delicious chicken and cake was good but I think anyone watching us eat was either repulsed by how fast we hoovered that down or impressed. We made it to to the check-in for the tour with about 5 minutes before it started. The yule log was chocolate with a light mint flavor, I wish I had spent more time enjoying it.

Holidaytime at Disneyland tour

Brad and I have taken the Holidaytime at Disneyland tour before, we took it in 2015. At that time the tour was only in Disneyland and we were taken into Haunted Mansion Holiday and it's a small world holiday, and got special seating (with treats) for the Christmas parade. I had read that the tour had changed and attractions were no longer part of the tour. We decided it would be fun with or without attractions, plus we would get a new pin & mug, hear (and rehear) information about the parks, but had good seating for the parade.

So the tour starts and after our guide (I think his name was Matt) gave us the opening spiel, we headed over to California Adventure. This was unexpected but nice to get a little inside scoop on the decorations there.

A picture of one of the store displays at DCA. I like the vintage vibe of these, which of course is fitting to the theme of Buena Vista St.
IMG_9700.JPG

A close up look at some of the decorations on the tree at DCA.

And one of the bells by Elias & Company store
IMG_9703.JPG

And by the "tree" near Pixar Pier.
IMG_9706.JPG

A close up of some of the Mickeys on that tree
IMG_9710.JPG

Back to Buena Vista Street. I know that attractions aren't billed as part of the tour, but going for a spin on Luigi's or Maters that have a Christmas overlay might have beefed up the DCA part of the tour. Although both in DCA and Disneyland one of the good points of the tour is that we were forced to slow down and just enjoy the scenery.
IMG_9712.JPG
IMG_9713.JPG

Then we were taken into Trolley Treats and we were each given a big chunk of peppermint fudge (very tasty).
IMG_9714.JPG

And back to Disneyland to continue the tour.
IMG_9717.JPG

We were told about the Christmas tree being swapped for the light in Walt's apartment during the holiday season, which we already knew but I was able to get a better picture this time.

Continuing the Holidaytime at Disneyland tour....

Back in Disneyland we stopped in Town Square and admired the tree.
IMG_9720.JPG
IMG_9723.JPG

On Main Street we were told the story of how Disneyland commemorates Hanukkah, the dr puts a menorah in the window. But since it wasn't close to Hanukkah yet, no menorah.
IMG_9725.JPG

We had some stories in front of the castle and as the guide talked I looked around and took some "artsy" pictures. I also noticed a woman fully lying down on a bench sleeping and covered up with a blanket, it looked strange and out of place. Anyway....
IMG_9726.JPG
IMG_9728.JPG

I also noticed Peter Pan, just wandering around and where Peter is.....
IMG_9729.JPG

Hook isn't far behind! I loved that I was able to get a picture of our guide and Hook. Not the best picture of our guide, sorry dude.
IMG_9730.JPG

And we then admired the castle a little more head on.

Holidaytime at Disneyland

We finished up in the Frontierland/New Orleans Square area and made our way via the Big Thunder Trail through Fantasyland over to it's a small world holiday. To our surprise our guide informed us that we had time for a ride on small world before the parade. So Brad and I happily sailed off through this great attraction again. After our ride on small world we had about 5 minutes before the parade was going to start but no worries we were seated across from small world. When we were seated he were given a mug of hot chocolate and a gingerbread man cookie as our special treat. We were given our pin at the end of the parade. Neither of us felt like munching on the gingerbread at that time, plus we don't really like gingerbread but we put them in a ziploc bag and took them with us. Fastforward to being home, I decided to put one of the gingerbread men in my bag for lunch on my first day back at work...and I normally hate gingerbread (love the smell though) and this gingerbread man was so delicious! I wish I had tried it in Disneyland so I could have bought more from the bakery. I didn't tell Brad how delicious it was until I had eaten them both!!!! Evil I know but I let him have extra peppermint fudge.

Holidaytime at Disneyland tour....parade viewing

As it says above it was the time in the tour to view the parade. We had chairs in the front of the section reserved for tours and the parade started in the area by small world so we had a great view. The lady (a few years older than me) next to me was having way too much fun with her gingerbread man, she kept making him dance and took pictures of him with the parade behind him for the whole parade. It was funny and slightly annoying (when she would say wheeeee! as he danced). Now I wish I would have taken a picture of her playing with him. At least she was having a good time I guess.

So pictures of the start of the parade, as I mentioned before the parade starts with the toy soldiers which are my favorite so this section of pictures is mostly pictures of my boys...

I loved the sweaters that cast members working the parade were wearing. I wish I could have bought one.
