Have not forgotten about the Xanadu mall -- just got a bit overwhelmed last week...hmm space maybe you should assign yourself 4 additional projects on top of designing a park on top of preparing a comp mkay? :hilarious:

So going to keep it to 1 Fantasmic 2000 project per Stanza -- with this one hopefully being the mall (at least in rough form)

And also the behind the scenes content of Stanza IV and what it originally was!

Will get to that either tomorrow or later in the week before the projects come in.

Stanza IV: Rhapsody in Blueprint

Behind The Scenes

One of the late developments to the competition, the first three challenges were all planned out sometime in January or February, but in late-March, early-April, after seeing how the first Stanzas went, both Red and myself wanted to try and up the stakes a little and try something different.

The original plan for Stanza IV - was actually something you already did!
Poster4.JPG

Stanza I and II have been the same since the beginning...but the original Stanza III was moved around towards a future Stanza because we felt it fit better later in the competition.

But from extensive research into Team Air's Disneyland Brazil Resort project, we assembled the theme park you are working with right now, in order to present a scenario that 'feels' like a real Disney park, where most of these imagineering competition challenges tend to take place. If we could simulate that with a new location, not only would the new location open up doors in the future for more unique challenge locations, but also provide an open landscape for presenting the challenges.

Perhaps a few years down the line someone else wants to do a Disneyland Brazil challenge. They could either use this Resort and expand on the lore, or design their own and present it as the challenge. Or they could go anywhere. Madrid, Dubai, India, Australia, anywhere you want these types of simulation challenges can be reproducable and take competitions in directions that really have not been seen before! Because as the competitions add up over the years, there will come a point in time where it might be tough to come up with new challenges revolving around designing attractions in parks that have announced expansions and what not.

Time travel (in Stanza II), Hotels that can go outside Disney Resorts (in Stanza III), and now simulated resorts (in Stanza IV) are a few ways that we wanted to experiment with to expand challenge possibilities and see what worked for the next generation.

Behind the Scenes
Transition from Act I to Act II

Back in January @MonorailRed and myself had two paths that we could follow -- one of while stayed the course of week long projects in 2 or 3 teams, keeping in line with the former seasons of The Sorcerer's Apprentice. There was also the continuing Figment/Dreamfinder narrative that would have continued through Act II.

However, with finals coming up, we both thought that there could be a possibility that the players would be preoccupied, and what if weeks went by with minimal input, especially since week long projects tend to be more in-depth, asking the teams to design multiple facets (to allow room for multiple players to participate)

So we came up with a second option for Act II - one that would take the competition in a different direction than ever before, but also accommodate final exams and schedules in May, which is probably the worst month for competitions throughout the year. We would have multiple different Stanzas, each lasting anywhere from 2-5 days, rapid fire, but non-elimination until the end of the Act.

This would cut down the 'down-time' between Stanzas having to determine board room decisions, and also allow folks to take breaks throughout for finals/work/etc - without fear of being eliminated right away. Now if you took multiple (3,4,5 challenges off) that's a different story, but missing 1 or 2 isn't going to completely tarnish your game, especially if you tried your best prior.

With that we'd like to share the 'other' path for Act II - and what the 'deleted Stanzas' were for the season.

In Walt’s Disneyland, most of the lands throughout are in pristine condition, either transporting guests to the jungles of Africa, or a New Orleans street corner, or a land of Fantasy, each has its own unique contribution to the story. However, Tomorrowland has been plagued in a state of disarray for decades now even before the late 90s overlay into Discoveryland. A land of tomorrow is tough to navigate long term, so how do we fix that? What is it about Tomorrowland specifically that is so hard to maintain? Is it that unlike most other lands, there is no overarching story and it’s a bunch of IPs that can become dated? Or maybe because rides are left in a state of decay and misery for the guests?

Well, now is the time to find out, has WDI has tasked you with the opportunity to create a completely new blue-sky renovation of Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. Essentially the land will be inaccessible for months to years while you and your teams complete this project. So everything in Tomorrowland is up for grabs to change, expand, and ultimately, ‘fix’ - with the goal of designing a Tomorrowland that can sustain itself for decades to come.

In the spirit of Avengers: Infinity War, this challenge will be a bit different than most, and unique to any challenge seen throughout the history of Sorcerer’s Apprentice. For this, all teams will combine into one team (The Avengers) and compete against...us! MonorailRed, and myself, in a challenge that you all create! If you win, you get an extra vacation day for the later rounds.

This is a non-elimination challenge, and everyone including previously eliminated players, are allowed to pitch in together to help design this challenge you all create. The extended time and format for this challenge is an attempt to accommodate people who have final exams in college, or AP Exams in high school, or just a busy work schedule which run from May 7th-18th. Or, folks who just need a bit of a respite before the home stretch of the competition. Being all on one team will hopefully allow those who need to study the flexibility of being able to, while not feeling like they are hurting the team from a numbers standpoint.

Some commentary on this one - The Infinity Suite was always intended to be part of the competition, especially with the release of Infinity War around the time we wanted to do the Stanza, but the format of it changed around.

As you can see - originally the players were to come up with the challenge, a bit of an exercise reminiscent of The House Cup, where the players decided the challenges in advance of the competition. That being said, there were variables in this that prompted us to change course. First that it takes a while for a lot of people to come to consensus on anything - especially choosing the topic. In HC, that was all done before the competition even started, so there was time, in this though, with finals coming up, while we still wanted to have some interactivity with the Stanza, when we ended up going with the alternative Act II - we scrapped Tomorrow and Fugue, and made The Infinity Suite the beginning of Act II - to show a transition in style more effectively.

And we altered it to be about new Disney Parks - and had the option be which parks you would redesign, and less about choosing the project topic and prompt as a whole, which could have taken longer.

Volcano Bay opened in 2017 to mostly positive reviews, with criticism coming from that fact that it felt like a rushed opening. Not only were things still under construction when the park was open to guests, but the park itself is so small that the crowds were a complete nightmare, with the park routinely closing around 9-10am for capacity. The capacity issue was also complicated by TapuTapu, the function of which was hit or miss in the early months after the park’s opening day, tapping then waiting hours for the top attractions.

For this challenge, you and your teams are going to fix that problem by designing a ‘Phase 2’ for Volcano Bay. This can involve anything from new slides, attractions, landscapes, restaurants, shops, and/or refurbishments to current areas including the TapuTapu system. Anything you feel would better suit Volcano Bay and the Universal Orlando guests going forward.

Some notes on this one

1 - Volcano Bat was involved in the comics more @D Hindley :p
2 - Night on Bat Mountain was always going to be part of the season, however the Stanza prompt itself changed over time from a Volcano Bay Phase 2 - into a new character and mascot for the park, as water parks can sometimes be a bit of a conundrum when it comes to imagineering. There's only so much you can do with slides, but a character we thought would allow more possibilities and creativity.

3 - In the comic again, I was going to reference some past projects such as the Lord of the Rings project seen from above as they fly into Universal

Most Disney Resorts have some sort of shopping district within the resort complex, from Disney Springs in Walt Disney World, to Downtown Disney in Disneyland, to Disneytown in Shanghai Disneyland, these are areas that are common and offer a variety of restaurants, shops, and entertainment for guests and locals. Nevertheless, Hong Kong Disneyland doesn’t have a shopping district, and that is where our challenge leads us this Stanza.

For this challenge, the teams will be designing a Hong Kong Disneyland shopping district. There are two requirements. One requirement being that it includes venues and locations found in Hong Kong rather than Americanize the stores with only familiar titles. Another requirement is that the shopping center has a backstory attached to it, which can tie in with something in Hong Kong Disneyland itself, or a resort hotel, or be its own unique locale.

So what's this you say? Another Rite of Springs prompt??:D Yes, in fact the original version of the 'Rite of Springs' was to design a Disney Springs for Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. After potentially several projects in the US, we'd travel abroad for Stanza VIII, IX, and X - before coming back home for Act III.

While we never got to Hong Kong Disneyland in the alternative Act II that ended up being the route we took, it was mostly because with shorter timeframes, and with a few large SA challenges taking place in Hong Kong, along with the finale for OSC Season 4 Episode 1, and SYWTBAI Season 17 having a China team...we wanted to make it stand out a bit more and be less repetitive.

I still think a Disney Springs with a rapid transportation monorail or high-speed rail to Hong Kong would be an amazing project though - maybe for SA 5??;)

In 2016, Shanghai Disneyland opened to the public with some excellent attractions including Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure and Tron: Lightcycle Power Run, yet it also opened with some expansive yet bland attractions such as Voyage to the Crystal Grotto. This attraction is a Storybook Canal type attraction on a larger scale and footprint, but doesn’t offer much in terms of excitement or wonder that a Jungle Cruise type attraction does or some other sort of E-ticket experience in Fantasyland.

Which brings us to your task this Stanza which is to Remove Voyage to the Crystal Grotto and replacing it with an attraction (or attractions) worth the footprint it takes up in the center of Fantasyland. It is up to you and your team how exactly you’ll tackle this challenge, either by refurbing the existing attraction, changing it out with a new attraction in its place, or using the land differently with multiple attractions. The choice is entirely up to you!
