Disney's Parks Chief Emerges as Contender to Succeed Iger

As a lifelong die-hard Disney fan, I cannot understand how there are Disney fans who are cheering on this sort of merger. Can't imagine what this would do to whatever is left of 'the Disney brand'.
The "Disney brand" will be just fine. They have managed to keep the brand intact through the use of vertical businesses for many decades now.

Wishful thinking I know. If this deal does go through, Iger will have outdone himself as the direct anti-thesis to Walt Disney.
And yes, I know the company hasn't been "Walt-like" for decades.

Times are different, and so is how business is done.

...and yet none of that should have caused Disney to change its position as leading the charge of creativity and innovation. Quite literally, all Iger has done is acquire outside companies and rebrand Disney as an IP distribution factory. You'll have a hard time convincing me that we can just chalk it up to how "business is done" today.

Do you suppose Brian Ross is worried about being forced to compromise his journalistic integrity or something?

Brian Ross apologized and was suspended without pay.

Has Sean Hannity suffered any consequences for his continued peddling of lies and conspiracy theories?

That’s the difference between a real news org and a fake one. Real ones discipline people who mess up. Fake ones count the dollars their talking heads reel in and never make a stink.

Brian Ross is a journalist who lied who has to present the facts. Sean Hannity is a commentator who has to present his opinions.

Hannity claims to be a journalist, but regardless he has an hour block on a news channel and is obligated to not willingly spread misinformation. If Fox was a real news org, it would not tolerate that from anyone on their channel and would discipline appropriately.

You know, like ABC did.

There's a gulf of difference between opinion shows and hard news. One of the problems these days is that people are ignoring the difference.

All news networks have shows that are people giving their opinions on the news rather than reporting the news. CNN, MSNBC, ABC, Fox News. They all have shows like Hannity. What do you think Larry King's show on CNN was? There's a difference between people who talk about the news and those who report the news. They're different jobs with different standards.

Have you ever watched Hannity? He does “investigative” pieces and reports news. He doesn’t just spew opinion for an hour. And ABC doesn’t have any opinion shows that I know of, unless you count GMA.

No one has blurred the line between news and opinion like Fox. As a result they don’t get a pass on basic journalistic standards.

Last time I checked Disney has had quite a few hits that were not related to any acquisition during the Iger era. This includes huge hits like Frozen.

So just because they have had success with Pixar, Marval, and Lucas, doesn't mean they are just an IP distribution company. However in all fairness, most large studios, including Paramount, Universal, Sony, and Fox are just distribution companies now and have been for decades. That is how Hollywood has done business for like 30 years.

Thats not the problem. Every studio has subdivisions that they produce movies from, thats normal. But theres a fundamental difference as to what the Disney brand has come to. We're seeing an increasing amount of projects that are completely outside of the brand (ie Guardians of the Galaxy) and all opportunities to try things creative are scrapped for bigger blockbusters that certainly don't fit in with the family friendly brand Disney has built.

His show is still not a news show. Just like Rachel Maddow's show isn't a news show.
Whether ABC has opinion shows makes no difference. You're the one injecting an opinion show into the discussion.

That is not true. Major studios use outside production companies, such as Bruckheimer Films, to develop and produce films. You know all those nice title cards that take 5 mins to display in front of a film, those are not subdivisions, those are outside companies. The major studios rarely produce their own films without an outside company.

Disney is only different that they have these companies in house while still producing their own films. Touchstone for example has been used since the 80s for almost all Disney adult related content.

Again, Hannity himself claims to be a journalist. If he wants to play reporter, then his network should treat him accordingly. And despite it being a supposed opinion show, it's primetime news for the millions who watch it because that's how Hannity presents his show content. I'm not making this up, I watch the show on a semi-regular basis just to see what he's doing.

Of course, the decent thing to do would be to hold all of the people who have shows on your "news" network to basic honesty standards, but that's never been a concern.

Regardless of Fox and its standards or lack thereof, again, ABC did the right thing with Ross and handled it correctly. Ross apologized, he was suspended without pay. So while anyone can point at the Ross incident and say look at that fake news, it's important how the news org deals with it.

I don't know that Ross lied. He got something wrong in his zeal to break a story. He is also being punished for the error.

And watch what happens, I wouldn't be surprised that its proven that he ended up reporting the truth even though he didn't know it. ;):p:D

Your desire to blur the lines between the news and opinion divisions of Fox doesn't make it so.

They ditched Glenn Beck when his conspiracy theories were going way of the deep end and they were losing sponsors. Hannity is getting there and starting to lose a significant number of sponsors.
If they lose sponsors, then they probably should. That doesn't change the fact that he's not part of the news division, which was the point being discussed.

The LA Times take on Iger staying.

http://www.latimes.com/business/hollywood/la-fi-ct-disney-bob-iger-fox-20171206-story.html

>>Analysts said they would not be surprised to see Iger stay on the job a few more years.

"This is exactly what Disney would need — a great integrator of business units following a merger,” said C. Kerry Fields, a professor of business law and ethics at the USC Marshall School of Business. “It provides stability to the management teams on both sides of the transaction. Having an experienced hand following an acquisition is crucial to ensure that the merged-in company will fit the culture and opportunities of the acquirer.<<

And looks like Fox has an Ace up its sleeve that makes Disney and Comcast drool...

http://www.latimes.com/business/hollywood/la-fi-ct-disney-fox-sports-nets-espn-20171206-story.html

>>Disney would like to buy Fox’s 22 regional sports networks — including Prime Ticket, Fox Sports West and YES, the network that carries the New York Yankees — as part of any deal, according to two people familiar with the discussions who were not authorized to comment.

Regional channels have become highly lucrative because they draw ardent sports fans who want to connect with their local teams. Fox’s local sports networks carry the games of 44 professional teams in three leagues: Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Assn. and the National Hockey League. That includes the NBA Los Angeles Clippers and the NHL Kings and Ducks.

Regional sports networks often rank among the most popular cable channels, which increases their value. Viewers tend to watch games live — rather than recording them — which makes the commercial time available in sports particularly worthwhile to advertisers.<<

Comcast already has 7 NBC Sports Regional Networks, and basically would control most of the market if it buys Fox, though Spectrum has a few.

Drawback is more pro and college teams are creating their own networks.

So let the bidding wars begin.

And this is what I expect from Disney - a basic level of integrity.
