Umbrella

We are leaving Saturday and I was wondering.....are umbrellas allowed inside the parks? We have ponchos but were wondering about umbrellas. Hopefully these storms will stay away and it won't matter.

Yes, you can take umbrella's inside the parks. Just last week we saw lots of folks with them. When its rains they have them out to sell if you dont have them with you when the rain starts. Have a great trip!!!

Okay. I have a couple of questions for you about the umbrellas. How much are they? And, do they have a Mickey on them or the stupid generalized "Disney Parks" logo that Meg Crofton stuck us with?

My hubby bought a golf umbrella from Team Mickey in 2009 and that thing is awesome! If you don't like the standard umbrellas you could always swing over to DtD for a golf one!

Golf unbrellas are much larger and will keep you dryer. They are aslo long, more like the size of a cane when closed. This would be my choice if you dont mind carrying it. The ones in the gift shop were black and about 12" long and will assume that the handle pulls out.

Golf umbrella? How is it different?

I can answer! Golf umbrellas are larger, and the new ones have a special wind vent so it won't be turned inside out with a large gust, along with a lightning resistant shaft and spokes, rather than metal.

But, most of them are a bit too large to carry around all day. If you must bring an umbrella, you might want to search for a compact, folding one that has the same features. A regular one would be fine for a rainy day, but will not be safe (or keep you dry) during a thunderstorm with winds and lightning.

mickeysshoes and I were answering at the same time - good thing we agree. ;)

Thanks. I'd actually rather have a collapsible one for the portability. :) You never know when the rain might show up in Florida. Especially around hurricane season. :( We got hit with rain twice on our last trip but it lasted no longer than 10 minutes each time. Once was on our first day in WDW. We were at DTD and coming out of the Lego store it started coming down. We just stood under the soffit and waited it out. The same thing happened on our EPCOT day. We got stuck for about 10 minutes standing under the walkway outside of a shop in Germany.

We are there last week and we had rain just about everyday but most of the time it was quick and hard burst also. We did have on in the early afternoon that lasted about 2 hours...heavy down pours. We cell phones and camera in bags we got from CM in the gift shops and off we went. The fun part was trying to figure out how to get back to Boardwalk Inn as the boat was not running becasue of the lighting. But we made and its all just part of the fun and memories!! If you have umbrellas I would pack and bring with you. I would guess the ones you can buy in Disney are $$$$ and I dont recall them being very cute...plain and simple and why I cant recall what they looked like. Now we did see (and have no clue where they got them) poncos that looks and Mickey and Minney!! Very cool way to stay dry!!!

I have a 'mini' umbrella that I carry when needed. Folded up its only about seven inches long so I can slide it into my bag. Otherwise, it opens to a full size umbrella. At the least mention of rain, I take it along and its come in handy many times.

In our backpack we carry a collapsable for each of us. Wife = Tinkerbell, Son = Wall-E and I have a Jack Skellington.... never leave the resort without them (great for shade when you really need it).

Like others have said above, golf umbrellas are about the size of a cane so they are a pain to carry around all day. But the other strike against them is if you are on a crowded bus, you are likely going to accidentally poke everyone around you with that rifle bullet tip they have. I can't tell you how many times I've been stabbed by those things on a busy bus or train.

If you use an umbrella just be aware of the people around you; I have been poked in the eye, stabbed and had all the water dumped on me because the person decided to shift it to his shoulder instead of holding it up straight.

I'd suggest getting a compact umbrella before going down, if you think you're going to need one.

I bought one of the small black umbrellas years ago and loved it. And it was only about $12. Unfortunately an unknown co-worker borrowed it without permission and broke the button so it wouldn't stay closed.

On my next trip (2009, I think it was) I bought a replacement, but they had re-designed the umbrella quality had gone down. The material was thinner (more like the super-compact umbrellas) and wasn't very good in a heavy rain. The old version was a heavy material like a golf umbrella's. The shaft was also shorter, which meant that when you held it, your hand was higher than it was when holding the old design. It was just an uncomfortable position to have to keep your arm in. (Might be OK for kids or people of the shorter persuasion)

I have two umbrellas by Totes/Isotoner that I recommend. One is a golf umbrella with the wind vents, the other is a semi-compact with auto-up and auto-down. (The auto-down just collapses the umbrella inward, you still have to push the shaft together, but it's very convenient for walking inside or getting into the car)
