Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I haven't seen Elio yet, and I don't want to spoil it by going into the specific thread, but I can see a few issues:

1) Lilo and Stitch are in theaters also. Unless you plan to see both, Stitch wins.
2) The name is nondescript. This is like John Carter (which I liked a lot). The title sounds like it's about frozen pizza.
3) Isn't the film about an autistic child? That may not be appealing to general audiences, or hit too close to home.
Why would an autistic child deter people from seeing the movie?

Dinosaurs usually do well, The JP movie seems the "safest" out of the three.
We will see what happens…. But the reactions from the screen unseen previews are not good…. In fact a few gave the impression that the film is awful…. But audiences had turn out for garbage over quality before so who knows

I've seen it in an early preview, it fell flat for my theater, no one left with smiles or talking about it after. ScarJo is good as always, but the rest just didn't hit.
I just posted a reply to Wil…. Every reaction I have seen is not good… and these are people who should be excited for seeing the film early… I don’t have high hopes for this

Fantastic Four is the one I'm the most curious about in terms of results. I suspect same for a lot of folks. Its got a lot going for it and everyone is in (near) universal acclaim in regards to the the retro look, the fact it has H.E.R.B.I.E in it, etc.

That said there are some headwinds and Marvel needs it to be a success. Add to this FF hasn't lived up to expectations at the box office previously. I must be an odd man out as I enjoyed both previous attempts aside from the inter-space cloud of Galactus. The first one was uneven but better than the second which just seemed "off" the whole movie.

Slightly further ahead?
Superman? I have no idea.

Either way its a possibility that there isn't going to be enough $$$ from the movie going public to go around for all three. Sure there might be some that will go see all of them, but is that the majority of people?

Either way in a week or so roughly we're going to find out.
Fantastic 4 just strikes me as something that is way bigger for the comic book community than the public at large. Most didn't grow up watching F4 cartoons or playing with the action figures etc. It could do great, but I won't be shocked if it doesn't do nearly as well as a lot thought (remember there was a lot of talk that F4 and X-Men were the two franchises Marvel still had to lead the next phases).

Superman I have NO idea. I honestly think it looks bad, though I'll admit I've always hated Superman, and I don't think much of Gunn either. But that has name power, so maybe people show up in force for it?

And last, I'd agree with your take JP is probably the safest of the 3.

I knew I should have gone to screen unseen. I figured it’s usually little art house stuff rather than blockbusters.

Yeah FF has always been an odd duck in the comic community and the movies.

The title “First Family of Marvel!” Might have worked great in the early 1960s but how much cachet now?

No idea.

As far as Superman I must be the only one who liked Henry Cavill as SM. Snyder I’m indifferent to but I did like the treatment. I’m with you though he’s not my favorite but don’t hate him either as a character. Neutral I guess.

And yeah you would have to think dinosaurs in the summer should be a hit but who knows these days.

Gun to head, I think Superman does better than FF. That said, mid to late July gets awfully crowded. JP is a wild card as it feels like a sequel/reboot nobody asked for but those films do great regardless.

First place is a Cadillac Eldorado. Second place is steak knives.

Which film comes in third place?*

*there’s also the possibility of a split decision - a movie performs poorly domestically by cleans up internationally (JP?). Or, say FF underperforms expectations but doesn’t lose money and is well regarded by audiences and critics alike and stops the franchise bleeding? Superman, on the other hand, is a bet the house move by WBD/DC Studios as a faceplant here really upends their entire franchise and maybe the financial house of cards Zaslav has built.
