To the end that they built this massive land based on toys, and didn’t build a big toy store to sell the merchandise they allegedly depend on. Isn’t that what Bobby C wants? To him and current management, the rides are just advertisements to sell Disney + subscriptions and toys.
I personally don’t care for anything Toy Story related, but it still seems like a huge miss. Also would add some shade in that “human cooker” of a land. But you’re right, Disney merchandise is lacking variety now more than ever.

I skipped it last trip (didn’t feel like waiting an hour to play a Wii game) so I’m not sure what the current “store” looks like. From images, it seemed like an indoor merch cart?

I’m actually pretty excited for this mini expansion. I liked Toy Story Land despite it’s flaws and this restaurant seems like it could be a fun place to eat (HWS could use more dining locations).

Is this what the new covered area is for, an outdoor shop, not seating like we thought?

No, the covered area being constructed now is for shaded-seating where previously was just umbrellas and sun.
The DPB post implies a new giftshop will be placed at the end of TSMM, which will replace the office-looking bare store that was previously a CM break room (supposedly) added in 2019.
