In a move everyone in the last two-three years saw coming, Alan Horn is retiring from Disney, and Hollywood for good.

There are no plans for a successor, meaning Alan Bergman is all but poised to take over the division.

(No, he ain't going back to WB, especially given it's a show right now.)

Horn has been a true disaster as studio chairman and managed to fool the world into thinking he stabilized things and "calmed the waters." He did squat except light ground fires and take credit for putting them out. He's an arsonist who happens to be a firefighter. From James Gunn to the Sony/Marvel flap, to the release of Solo to a partial responsibility for the ScarJo lawsuit, all he has done is brought devastation, and he's also helped spread the reputation that Disney does nothing now but recycle past glories.

And he's a repeat offender. Look at what happened to Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne, and how Horn took over New Line. Golden Compass was his fault, but Shaye and Lynne took the fall.

Horn should never have been chair of any studio to begin with; his career is nothing but failing upwards.

Warner Bros. didn't control New Line during that period. Also, the problem with that movie was that New Line decided to give it a $180 million budget (when it really didn't need it) and raised money by selling off the overseas rights. The film did well globally but New Line got $0 from those markets.

Also, are you referring the same Robert Shaye who idiotically decided to direct The Last Mimzy himself because no one else wanted to? That movie bombed just as hard, even though both it and Golden Compass were pretty decent.

Horn doubled down on the bet for the movie, putting far more at stake than New Line, Shaye and Lynne did, then let them take the fall, because he was scheming all along for WB to consume New Line. That could only happen if Shaye and Lynne were seen as liabilities, so he set them up to fail.

Shaye is the one who made New Line "the House that Freddy Krueger built," made the leap on LOTR when Eisner and Harvey Weinstein got cold feet, built New Line into a great home for art house and indie films, finding and securing the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson and Boogie Nights on the advice and expertise of Michael De Luca. Shaye has done far more and has more skill and true talent in his pinkie than Horn has in his entire body.
