When Does the Fantasyland Expansion Open: A Very Early Pre-Trip Report

Edit: As this PTR spans a year, I have started over fresh. If you want the "short version", check it out here.)

Anyone who knows me knows that I am always planning my next trip. Even when that next trip is a long way off. The only time I am not planning a Disney World trip is when I am actually in Disney World. And even then, there's a good chance I am making mental notes for things to do on future trips.

After our last trip in 2010, I knew it would be a while before we returned. At one point during the trip, my wife told me she would be happy never to return to Disney World again. And she meant it. Since then, her stance has weakened. I got her to agree to a five-year wait. But with the kids' help, she is now ready to go back.

(If you care to read my 2010 trip report for the blow-by-blow, here's a link: http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=564728)

Getting my wife to agree to go again was but one obstacle in my way. The fact of the matter is that if we went again today, we would almost certainly have a similar experience that would result in my wife swearing off Disney forever all over again. Obviously, I want to avoid that. The next trip needs to involve less agony and more ecstacy.

So I have vowed to hold off our next trip until the kids are old enough to really enjoy it and to make the trip less stressful. Because as magical as Disney World is, traveling with little kids is stressful. This is probably as good a time as any to introduce you to my family.

I'll start with myself. I've been around the boards for a long time. Obviously, I am a Disney fan. That wasn't always the case. While I always enjoyed Disney animation, I was anything but a fan of the company for many years. But after honeymooning at Disney World in 2003, I slowly became interested in the parks and then the company as a whole. My wife would tell you that I am obsessed although I would argue that she uses that word too loosely.

My wife, Mindy, has always been a Mickey Mouse fan. When I found out she had never been to Disney World, I decided to make that our honeymoon spot. She liked it, but it's not her style of vacation. Mindy likes what she calls a "relaxing vacation". Her ideal vacation involves doing all the things she does on weekends in a hotel room instead of our house. There is a lot of daytime TV and romance novels. I find this kind of vacation mind-numbingly boring and frankly a waste of money. Why leave home if you're just going to watch Judge Judy?

Then, there's our two daughters, Josie and Kara. Here they are on Halloween.

halloween.jpg

(If you'd care to read about how those particular costumes came about, I've written up the story on my blog here: http://lebeauleblog.wordpress.com/2011/11/02/post-halloween-update/)

Josie is our oldest. I will probably refer to her as Joey sometimes. That is what we call her at home. This year, she decided she prefers Josie (her birthname) so I try to use that whenever possible. But I use Josie, Joey and Jo-Jo interchangeably.

Josie has been to Disney World 3 times in six years. Her first trip was in 2007 when she was nearly 2 years old. On that trip, she loved the characters but had very little interest in rides. The next trip was in the fall of 2008 when she was 3 1/2. On that trip, her priorities had reversed. She discovered she loved rides but was scared of characters.

Josie was almost five on our last trip in 2010. On this trip, she was okay with both rides and characters. But she had reservations about them both. The things she liked the best were the gift shops, the hotel pool and the vending machines.

For the last few years, we have gotten passes to our local amusement park, Kings Island. I use Kings Island as a kind of training ground for Disney World. Over the summer, I have finally gotten Josie to the point where she enjoys rides and characters. I think she's ready to go back.

(If you'd like to read about some of our KI trips from the summer, here are some links: Opening Day, UK Day, mid-summer trip, Halloween.)

Our youngest daughter is Kara. When we went in 2008, my wife was pregnant with Kara. So, by my math, she has been to Disney World 1.5 times. When we went in 2010, she was not quite one year old. At the time we planned the trip, she was a very passive infant. She was happy to sit in a stroller or on our laps and just take everything in.

But then she discovered crawling. And shortly after that walking. By the time we went on our trip, Kara was a very busy 11-month old. She had to explore everything all the time. Sitting on our laps during the flight or the many bus rides was not an option. Neither was wearing shoes. She took them off and tossed them. We lost one in the airport at the start of our trip.

In short, Kara was a handful. And having both kids in a stroller made the trip a lot of work. The double stroller was heavy and hard to load and unload on the packed buses. Half the time, one of the girls would refuse to ride in the stroller anyway. So then we had to deal with the giant stroller and carrying one of the girls.

With that in mind, I decided that we would be down to a single stroller on our next trip. Also, I would wait until Kara was fully potty trained. No more diaper bags. I think we are down to the single stroller by now. Josie never sits in one any more. And we're close on the potty training thing. Kara has gone on the potty. But it's still more the exception that the norm.

I should also mention that Kara absolutely hates rides and characters. She freaks out whenever she sees anyone in a character costume. She is still traumatized by the time the Easter Bunny came to her school. At Kings Island, she won't get near Snoopy. I bought Kara her first Kings Island pass for next summer. Hopefully, by the end of the summer, she will feel comfortable with rides and characters.

I figure that by late 2012, the girls will be ready for our triumphant return to Disney World. The Fantasyland Expansion should be mostly complete. And my girls will be at a great age for the princess-themed additions (3 and 7 - the target demo really). But there are still a lot of variables that need to be figured out.

We don't yet have the 2012 school calendar. Originally, I was against pulling Josie out of school. But the more I have thought about it, the more open I am to doing it as a one-time option. Josie's a great student and should not have any problem missing a few days. So, the idea is to schedule our trip during a week that her school already has an in-service day scheduled. That way, she'll only miss a few days instead of a whole week.

Then there's the matter of discounts. I plan to go during the off-season, so I figure some kind of discount will be available. But I won't know for sure until some time next year.

One idea I have is to stay at the Little Mermaid rooms in the Art of Animation resort. But before I can commit to that, a few things need to happen. Right now, Disney has yet to make those rooms available for booking. They are meant to be open about the same time as the FLE and should be available for our late 2012 trip. But there's no guarantee.

So, right now everything is still very up in the air. So much so, that some might consider it too early for a pre-trip report. I mean, it's possible the trip may not even happen until 2013! So this thread (at least early on) will serve less as a documentation of trip planning than an open journal documenting my family's preparation for our next trip - whenever that may be.

You can expect to read updates on the girls. For example, Kara has entered a major princess phase out of the blue. I'll definitely keep you up to date on her progress this summer as I try to get her used to rides and characters at Kings Island. And as info becomes available, this will transition into more of a traditional pre-trip report.

As always, feedback and suggestions are welcome. Thanks for reading!

We also went to Disney in 2010, early February. My kids were 7, 3, 1-1/2. We had 3 strollers ( one double and 2 singles). We had our nephew with us who was 5. They were all big monster strollers. We made the decision then that we would not be back unless we only had to bring one or hopefully no strollers. We also found out about the FLE that trip or right before it. We are from Louisiana and we normally go the week of Mardi Gras because the kids are out of school. Well this changed that year too. The crowds due to Presidents day was outrageous. We are now going to go the week after Thanksgiving. I do not know what days the kids are going to be out of school because all the kids will be in school then. Everything is booked and paid for but I guess I can still change days. Also, I read in the Student/ Parent Handbook out school board gives at the beginning of the school year that "educational field trips are excusable absences" I have talked to our kids principal and she feels it is educational and will excuse it, mainly because my kids are smart and don't miss school. If you need any help with it or have questions, just ask. I have researched this time and it seems perfect. Nice weather and very low crowds. Also, the dining plan in normally offered for free!!!

Wow! You are a real trooper. I thought two kids in a double stroller was difficult! My hats off to you!

The crowds we experienced in mid-March weren't too bad considering that we were there during the cheer competitions and some spring breaks. The afternoons were packed, but we were always back at the resort for naps and pool time by then.

The buses were a mess just about every day. And with Kara refusing to sit on our laps, the buses were a nightmare.

I do not know what days the kids are going to be out of school because all the kids will be in school then. Everything is booked and paid for but I guess I can still change days. We have been in the fall before and love it. In the past, we didn't have school age kids, so missing school wasn't a concern. I always thought I would never pull my kids out of school for a vacation. But just this once while Josie's in 2nd grade and Kara's still in daycare, I think I might make an exception.

Like your kids, Josie does exceptionally well in school. So I have no doubt they will accomodate our request. But I'll definitely clear it with her teacher before we commit.

Sounds like we're on the same wavelength planning-wise. I'm sure I'll pick your brain as things get closer. Can't wait to hear about your trip next year!

When I was Josie's age, I went for Halloween and was out of school for a week... my teacher let me keep a journal every day, so that I would be practicing my writing and there were also some Mickey Math Problems thrown in there too. Plus, with the animals and WS, you can get some science and social studies in... just something to bring up with the teacher when you talk to him/her next year!

Looking forward to hearing about how your planning progresses!

Excellent ideas.

Josie is kind of a nut about school. (Well, she's a nut about a lot of things!)

Back when she was in pre-school, she used to bring it home all the time. She would play the teacher and we were the students. She made us do "circle time" every single night. We always knew exactly what happened in school that day because she reinacted it.

Now that she is older, she doesn't play school as much. But she reads a lot. And she practices her spelling words on her own. She's always asking me to quiz her on math or spelling. She goes far beyond whatever homework assignments she may have. Sometimes, I have to tell her to relax.

My mom is the kindergarten teacher at Josie's school. (That's why it is Josie's school. Made the transition last year very easy.) So, I have no doubt the 2nd grade teacher will allow a vacation when the time comes.

She sounds just like me when I was her age. I never did grow out of the playing school (or the reading part either, come to think of it), and now I'm going to school to be a teacher. You shouldn't have any problems getting her out for the trip, as long as the district doesn't have any weird rules about absences.

We should be good. It's a private school. I know my mom complains whenever parents pull their kids for a week. But they generally allow it.

If I think it will set Josie back at all, I won't do it. But judging by where we are today, I can't imagine it will be a problem.

Ironically, my parents used to pull me out of school for a week every year when I was in grade school. My younger siblings went to a different school and our spring breaks didn't align. So, I ended up with a 2 week spring break every year while we went on vacation during the younger siblings' break.

If my mom gets at all critical about my decision, I'll remind her of that.

We pulled our kids out last month for our vacation. They are in first and third grade. Neither one of them had any problem getting caught up when they returned. Both teachers sent a little bit of math home with them to do and I had them read and write every day we were there. My son (third grade) got himself worked up before we left that he was going to miss something important and not be able to get caught up. He literally made himself sick with worry, which was a huge surprise to me since he is in the gifted program at his school and had no problems afterward! We have decided that we won't be doing that again in the future, only because I think he will be missing more and more as he gets older. I don't feel bad at all about taking them out! Your daughter should be fine.
It was such a relief this time only having 1 umbrella stroller and no diapers to worry about. I can't wait for the day when I can carry one small bag with my wallet, phone, and camera!

I could see Josie getting worked up. She has a fair amount of anxiety about school. We had an incident this year where a little boy accidentally took her homework and handed it in. When Josie couldn't find it to hand it in herself, she had a melt down. For a few weeks after that, she was nervous about going to school. It was rough. Now she checks her backpack and her folders constantly to make sure everything is there.

We have decided that we won't be doing that again in the future, only because I think he will be missing more and more as he gets older. I don't feel bad at all about taking them out! Your daughter should be fine.

Yeah, I won't do this when Josie's older and Kara's in school. It's a one-time thing.

I hear ya! I get so jealous reading trip reports from these couples without kids. Although the TRs from parents with teens make me nervous.

ChristmasTree2011002.jpg

I hope everyone had a pleasant Thanksgiving. We put up the tree of course. Josie was off school the day before Thanksgiving, so I stayed home with her and put it up. The plan was to save decorating the tree until my wife and Kara got home. But Josie couldn't wait. So, we went ahead and trimmed the tree save for a few ornaments we set aside for Kara.

Not surprisingly, we have accumulated a lot of Disney ornaments over the years. My mom gives ornaments every year. And since she knows Mindy is a Mickey fan, she's been giving Mickey ornaments for about a decade now. Once I became a WDW fan and we had kids, the girls started getting all kinds of princess themed ornaments.

Growing up, the tree was always a big deal. As I said, my mom put a lot of thought into ornaments. She frequently made personalized ornaments. In later years, she stopped making her own. But still bought ornaments that might have some kind of personal relevance.

When we started putting up our own tree (which was essentially when Josie was old enough to know about such things) my mom packed up a box of ornaments that were mine in theory. In actuality, she had forgotten which ornaments belonged to which child. So some of the ornaments I received were originally intended for siblings and vice versa.

Essentially, we wound up with a bunch of ornaments with my name, initials or personal interests. Mindy's family has no such tradition. So she tends to be under-represented on our tree. Over time, she has accumulated a few ornaments. But most of them are Mickey-related which fits more into my Disney "obession" than anything. She does have a Bengals ornament which no one else will claim.

ChristmasTree2011025.jpg

The kids already have far more ornaments than Mindy does. Josie has tons of ornaments that she made every year at day care, preschool and kindergarten. Plus ornaments my mom gave her many of which had her picture in them. Her face is all over the tree. Kara's only two, but she already has around a dozen or so ornaments herself.

For the last few years, I have snapped up ornaments from the Disney Store when they go on sale. I try to get ones that have some personal meaning. For example, Josie went through a phase where she loved Jessie from Toy Story, so we have a Jessie ornament. She'll be getting another one in her stocking this year. Since she was the Cheshire Cat for Halloween this year, I also picked up a Cheshire Cat ornament.

When Kara finally got home, she was in awe of the tree. She had seen Christmas trees before of course. But she was too young to really register what they were. She approached the tree with the wonder of a two-year-old. Then she gasped and said, "Seeping Booty!" From there, she started pointing out all the Disney characters she spotted.

Just recently, Kara started going through a major Disney phase. It's really THE reason I have started seriously thinking about our next WDW trip. She's so freaking cute about it right now!

ChristmasTree2011004.jpg

It started with Halloween. She loved her Tinkerbell dress (although she usually referred to it as a mermaid dress) and it led to a fascination with the princesses. She can name them all now. Not long after, she started watching the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. So she's very interested in both sets of characters.

One day, we were killing time in the living room. I had my wife's laptop and for some reason I can't remember, I put on a ride video. Kara was fascinated. We watched several. She was mezmorized by the video for It's a Small World. Next we tried parades. She frequently asks me for parade videos now. Her favorite by far is the Mickey's Soundsational Parade at Disneyland. Why doesn't WDW have parades as nice as that one?

Anyway, I'm hoping I can make this trip happen before Kara outgrows her interest in Mickey Mouse and the princesses. Hopefully I can also get a few pictures of the tree to add to this post.

I titled the trip report for our 2010 trip The Ecstacy and the Agony. The "agony" part was both figurative and literal. Hauling around a bulky double stroller, 2 small kids, diaper bags, supplies and just being on our feet all day cause both my wife and myself actualy pain.

Now, I knew I wasn't in the best shape of my life that trip. Heck, I knew I was over weight. I had intended to drop some weight in preparation for the trip. But I didn't.

I had attributed that physical pain to all of the stuff we were lugging around. But this summer, I took Josie to Kings Island quite a bit. No stroller. Minimal supplies. No diaper bag. One kid who walked everywhere. And yet, by the end of a day at Kings Island, my back started hurting.

Once again, I knew I was overweight. But it was a bit of a wake-up call. I hadn't realized the impact it was having on day-to-day life. I resolved that it was time to take action. For real this time.

Back in late July, I started the Atkins diet. I had done a version of Atkins before getting married. Lost a lot of weight on it. Put it all back on and then some after I went off the diet. So this time, I decided to do the diet by the book.

It was slow going at first while my body adjusted to the diet. But eventually, I hit my rhythm and started seeing results. In the five months since I started Atkins, I have dropped roughly 50 lbs. (I say roughly because I am not 100% sure what my starting weight was.)

This weekend, I went out to run some errands. I finished up the girls' Chistmas shopping. And I went to buy myself some new pants. I have been putting off this necessary purchase until the last possible moment. My thought was I didn't want to have to buy new pants twice. But at this point, the only thing holding my pants up was my belt.

The plan was just to buy a new pair of jeans. My jeans were developing a small hole in the knee. I would hold off buying dress pants until I had lost a little more weight. I selected a pair of jeans based on price (because I expect to have to buy a smaller size still in another 5 to 6 months) and went back to the changing room to try them on.

To my surprise, the size I expected to fit was too big. And not just a little too big. It was swimming on me. I went back and grabbed the next two sizes down. I decided to go for broke and try on the smaller of the two sizes. They fit. They weren't even a struggle to put on.

Having exceeded my own expectations, I decided to splurge. I went and picked out an assortment of dress pants to go with my jeans. I'm not a clothes guy at all, but I had to admit it was fun grabbing up a shopping cart of "skinny" pants.

I have several long term goals to check off before our next Disney trip. Getting in shape is one of them. I'm still looking to drop at least another 30 lbs before the next trip. But what once seemed like an impossible goal is now very much in sight. I look forward to being able to tour the parks pain-free (relatively speaking) on our next trip.

I have something of a mental checklist before I commit to our next trip. One of the ideas behind this thread is to provide updates as I tick items off the checklist. As I mentioned in my previous post, weight loss is/was one of the items on that list. Another is setting aside the cash for the trip (still working on that one). And yet another is potty training. Not for me. For our youngest, Kara.

I'll spare every one the gory details. But we have been fully engaged in potty training for a little over a week now. And it's going well. Yes, laundry day has been a bit less pleasant than usual. But we have very few accidents now. Most of them are at school. At this point, I am very confident that potty training will not be a factor whenever I schedule our next trip.

I can't quite tick this one off the list completely. But we're close. And it's definitely one less obstacle. The next trip is still a long way off. But it's getting closer every day. And when the time is right, I will be prepared.

Congrats on the weight loss. When most people look at me, they think wow she is skinny. Well, last year, I would have thought the same thing. Weighing in at 125-130 and 5'5". This year for some reason, I have gained alot of weight. I now weigh 160-165. I feel it. I went up 3-4 pants sizes. My back hurts all the time. I know what I need to do to lose it I just need to buckle down and do it.
So excited about the potty training. We tried very hard to have my son completely done when we went last time. It was just so much easier for us to have him in a pull up incase of accidents. They didn't happen very often, maybe twice, while we was there. The baby, Kadi, was not even close to being ready. Our oldest, Kari, was potty trained the first time she went and it was very easy with only one child. I can't wait to go back without a diaper bag and no stroller even though we will have two wheel chairs for my in-laws.
Good luck planning. And who knows, we might be there at the same time...

I know what you mean on weight. I obviously knew I needed to loose weight and I knew how to do it. It was just a matter of getting my head in the right place. I still need to make a push to drop another 30 or so lbs to be at my ideal weight. And that's where I want to be before the trip. But since I'm more than 1/2 there, I'm feeling very empowered. No doubt in my mind I'll hit my goal well in advance of our next trip... which remains unscheduled.

The same is true of the potty training. Kara generally lets us know for #1. But we still have accidents for #2s. But looking at where we are now and how far off the next trip is, there's no doubt in my mind that we will be diaper-free on the next trip. And that sounds wonderful!

Unless I put off the next trip for a few years, we'll still need a stroller. But it will be a single instead of a double. And we will be a lot less reliant on it. When the stroller got rained on last trip, it pretty much killed an entire day for us.

I added some X-Mas tree pics to my earlier post. If anyone wants the full tree tour with lots of Disney goodness, here's a link.

Maybe we will see you there. The thing I am least certain about is when the trip will actually materialize.

That's what I'm working on right now for my trip - the weight loss. I am so determined to not look terrible in the pictures! I want to be able to look back and see that I actually looked decent, instead of cringing every time I looked at me. :(

Okay, this is going to be a hit to the ol' ego. But here goes:

This is me on our honeymoon in 2003:

And here's 2010:

7 years, 2 kids and a lot of weight later.

This is me and Josie at her Christmas play earlier this week:

In the middle, but closer to that first picture than I have been in many years.

It's rough. I have pictures from 3 trips where I just hate looking at any pictures I'm in. I have never been a big fan of having my picture taken regardless of my weight. But next trip, I'm going to have family pictures that don't make me cringe!

Great thread...I understand your "Disney Fixation"...I too..am afflicted. No cure, just dily doses and friends to lean on! Ha Ha! Yes, age and other factors can put a toll on alot of us...I put on at least ten pounds while down there...even with all the walking we did! So easy to say..."Well, we will never see or try that at home!". Keep up the great work on your thread and we will keep "leaning" on ya!

Thanks for the kind words. The kids seem to be counting on a late 2012 trip. So the pressure is on me to make it happen!
