Pre-Trip VACATION CREEP STRIKES AGAIN! A Birthday, Memorial Day, Flower and Garden PTR

*I will preface this report by saying that I actually wrote most of it a few months ago when we were in the early stages of planning. My DW suggested that I contain my enthusiasm and not post it until April; I agreed and here we are! I have added details over time but most of this has been sitting in a Word doc for awhile.*
======
I currently have a ton of work to do (music to memorize! contracts to sign! schedules to organize! emails to send! tax documents to sort! dishes to wash!) so naturally I am procrastinating by writing a pre trip report!

You've probably read plenty about us in my previous TRs so instead of introducing my wife M and myself I will get on to the details:

Dates

May 28-June 1 May 28-June 2! We'll be celebrating M's birthday! Usually her birthday falls during Memorial Day weekend but this year MD is a week later. We considered going for her actual birthday; while it would have been a bit cheaper and less crowded, she only has to use two three vacation days this way and the timing with the flights worked out. Speaking of...

Flights

Southwest recently added direct flights from EWR to MCO! ALSO, we recently received four drink coupons in the mail...EACH! That means we can each have two drinks on both flights!!! Our arrival flight lands around 10am and our return flight leaves MCO around 1pm. We usually stay much later on our departure day but then we are super exhausted and getting home is a hassle. This way we won't have to get up super early but we also won't have to worry about leaving bags with luggage services at the hotel. Speaking of...

Hotel

4 nights at Pop Century
4 nights at Port Orleans Riverside
4 nights at WDW Dolphin

1 night at Pop Century and 4 nights at WDW Dolphin
@lostpro9het has posted about the vacation creep as in finding ways to add more days to the beginning and end of a trip. We have experienced the vacation creep as in finding ways to gradually upgrade the hotel from a value resort to...well, you'll see! Back in November we booked Pop Century at a pretty good rate before any discounts were released. When the discounts came out in January I did the math and realized that we could upgrade to a garden room at Port Orleans Riverside for about $10 a night more than the original Pop reservation. DW has never stayed at POR and I stayed once with my family in 2003 but barely remember the resort so we went with it.

BUT THEN...

I found an amazing rate for Starwood Preferred Guests (of which I am a member) at the WDW Dolphin. It was only a little more per night than Riverside, which was a little more than Pop...all to be within walking distance of Epcot. THEN we found out that the Flower and Garden Festival, which was previously scheduled to end over a week before our arrival, would last through May 30 and we would get to enjoy the last three days! We took all of this as a sign that we should definitely book at the Dolphin!

BUT THEN...

M's parents decided to join us for part of the first three days of our trip (staying offsite) so we decided to extend our trip an extra day! The resort stays worked out so that we will be staying the first night at Pop and the remaining four at the Dolphin.

Airport transportation

Still figuring this out. We might just do UberBlack to the Dolphin to save time even though it's more expensive than a shuttle. Definitely UberX from Dolphin to MCO. If anyone has advice or recommendations on shuttles vs. Uber vs. private cars vs. ??? feel free to chime in here. We want the best combination of quick speed and low price.
DME from MCO to Pop, then UberX from Dolphin to MCO

  • Face the dreaded TSA lines at MCO and fly back to Newark, landing around 4:00pm
  • Sleep in, then walk to the Boardwalk for a late breakfast at Trattoria al forno
  • This day is pretty much open for catching up. We have some early afternoon FPs for MK and I'm sure we'll eventually end up in Epcot but other than that who knows?
Thursday, June 2
  • Pack and get dressed, then...
  • Walk to the Boardwalk Epcot for a farewell breakfast at Trattoria al forno Les Halles
  • Walk to Epcot for a last farewell (if there's time) or simply return to the Dolphin, check out, and take an Uber back to MCO
  • Face the dreaded TSA lines at MCO and fly back to Newark, landing around 4:00pm

We are hoping to do some more Disneybounding this time. Okay, I am planning to do some Disneybounding and hoping to convince the DW to join me. We are exploring some couples' (or at least coordinating) costume pairs and are considering things like Princess Aurora and "Princess Phillipa." If it takes me being the "Prince" to convince M to coordinate with me I'll do it! We don't want to be Anna and Elsa or anything other related characters because that would be weird. I tried to get her to be R2D2 to my C3P0 but she wasn't too enthusiastic about that. MAYBE I can get her to be Minnie and Daisy with me. So if anyone has any ideas for us let me know!We are going as Minnie and Daisy one day!

That's it for now. I'll post updates as we make changes and reserve things like FPs.

A whole week has passed since I began my PTR! I have been sick since Monday night (well, the wee hours of Tuesday morning I guess technically) and the only way to distract myself from feeling crappy has been to plan and dream about our trip. We've decided to just do one Disneybound (while I am accustomed to wearing outrageous costumes and having people stare at me on stage, it isn't the DW's idea of fun to have people looking at her, so we're just doing one), but it's a good one!

It me! Found the bow at Target for $2 and the polo at our thrift store for $4.50.

Since the skirt is technically a petticoat I'll be able to reuse it under dresses for singing (after I clean it of course!). Double score!

47 days to go! If you have any Disneybound photos you'd like to share (whether actually you or just a dream outfit you make on Polyvore or something) please share them here!

UPDATES! Warning: Long Post. There will be a TL;DR at the end for those who don't wish to read the whole thing.

The vacation creep is so real!!

It all started when we told M's parents we were coming down and asked if they wanted to join us for a day. They said of course (they have APs) and said they'd let us know which day they would be joining us. M's dad is a teacher and her mom is a church musician so we figured they would just come down Saturday and make a day trip of it to be back to church Sunday morning.

BUT THEN...they told us they were coming Saturday-Monday and staying two nights.

They're amazing people and we love them to death, but you do the math: three days out of a five day trip the in-laws will be hanging out with us in some capacity, and we're trying to have a romantic birthday celebration trip.

Then I had the idea to extend our trip by one day. Leaving early won't be an option because I have a rehearsal for an upcoming opera the Friday night before we leave, but maybe I could get something for the end of the trip??

I innocently checked Southwest to see if BY ANY CHANCE we could fly back to New York a day later for a similar price...and we could! It was easy to make the switch and now we're flying back Thursday, June 2. That gives us an extra day with just the two of us, and we'll be more relaxed when the fam comes down because we'll know we'll have extra time together at the end of the trip.

Then we had to figure out the hotel situation. We could have added a day at another resort to the end of the trip but who wants to move on their last full day of vacation? I considered just extending the Dolphin reservation by a day but then the beautiful rate I got back in February disappeared and was replaced by one much higher. So I called Starwood Preferred Guest to see about moving both the checkin and checkout dates one day later. For whatever reason moving the whole reservation only added like $2 a night (as opposed to like $50 a night to add a day), so we changed it.

Now we needed a room for the first night. The best case scenario would be to stay in a Disney value resort for one night if we could still book the passholder offer and be close by and just take an Uber to the Dolphin the next day. And what do you know, it turned out Pop Century (fave value!) was available with a nice passholder discount! And of course staying in a Disney resort solves the initial problem of airport transportation because we get to ride DME from MCO to Pop!

Now it's time for the icing on the cake: I finally get my elusive purple MagicBand!

MB.JPG

TL;DR: My in-laws are joining us for a couple of days, we are now staying an extra night, we're staying at Pop one night and the Dolphin the next four nights, we can take DME to Pop from the airport the first day, AND I GET A PURPLE MAGICBAND!

Love the Disneybound outfits. I think that would be so much fun. Maybe someone will try it with me next my family goes to WDW. Glad your hotel reservations worked out and the extra day is awesome!
Thank you! We had fun as Snow White and Ariel in October for Halloween so I was itching to get something together for this trip too. You should Disneybound even if no one will do it with you (but I hope you can convince someone!).

May the 4th be with you! I drew this for my voice and piano students today:

(If you don't know, the notes are G and C which make an interval called a 4th)

And what should arrive on this most wonderful day, but...

PURPLE MAGIC BANDS!

Just when you thought our vacation creep was finished creeping...

Today out of sheer curiosity I checked rates at the Swan for our dates. Lo and behold, there was an SPG member rate for significantly less than what we were paying for the Dolphin. The Swan has finished its refurb whereas the Dolphin is just starting and in total the switch would save almost $300! So no-brainer, we now have a nicer room with guaranteed at least queen beds (requested a king) instead of doubles, AND we get to experience a new hotel!!

In other news, we will be treating the in-laws to a late breakfast at Boma on their last day with us. Though my brother-in-law is joining us he won't have a park ticket (not sure what he'll be doing the whole time...) so we needed to book something at a resort. We also needed something with 2-3 options for vegetarians but also some options for less adventurous eaters so a lot of the resort restaurants were out, but a breakfast buffet makes sense. There really wasn't a lot open for Memorial Day weekend for 5 people, but Boma had a table for us and so Boma it is! Plus M's parents like animals and resort hopping so I think everyone will be pleased! Not to mention...JUNGLE JUICE!

I think you're going to really enjoy the Swan. The Swan is my favorite, out of the Dolphin and Swan hotels. I also get a decent rate with my AAA discount each year. (I'll be there next week!!) Although both hotels are very nice and in a great location, the reason I tend to like the Swan a bit better is because is somewhat smaller. I like the quieter vibe of the Swan, but both hotels are very good.

YAAY! Have fun on your trip next week! Thanks for the advice; I think we will prefer the Swan as well for the reasons you stated.

Coming closer and closer :) Great PTR!!
Thanks, @FlaggNL ! I can't believe we are down to 15 days!

The next two weeks will be very busy!
5/13 I teach this afternoon, and tonight I start rehearsals for Verdi's "Il trovatore" with a local opera company.
5/15 I sing at my church job.
5/16 I teach private students.
5/17-18 are my last two days of lessons at my school. For the kids singing/playing in the recital it is their last lesson before the performance, and for the kids not performing it will be "goodbye"/hugs/"see you next year"/"have a great summer" time.
5/19 I teach private students.
5/20 is the school recital. We have 17 kids performing in total! I have been recruited into playing for all 8 voice students.
5/22 I sing at my church job.
5/23 is my wife's actual birthday...but I have jury duty! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: I was planning to meet her in the city for lunch but now it looks like I won't see her until dinner. :( (side note: when I got my summons I called the court office to tell them I'd be out of town the following week. They said to bring my airline confirmation and I would be excused from those dates...but then it seems kind of pointless to go at all because then I cannot be selected for a long trial... :cautious: o_O ) But at least I get to give her her presents at some point!
5/24 will I have jury duty still? We will find out...
5/25 hopefully not jury duty. If I get out of it this day I'll have opera rehearsal.
5/26 again hopefully I won't have jury duty because I'm supposed to teach during the day.
5/27 same story. Maybe somewhere in there I'll have time to pack???
5/28 WE LEAVE FOR DISNEY!

Good luck sounds like you're going to need a vacation after all that!
