WDW then rental car to somewhere else?

Haven't seen this question answered before so here goes. Has anyone stayed on site and then needed to rent a vehicle in order to go somewhere else later in their trip...say to Cocoa Beach or south to another beach? What's the best way to get a rental car after staying on property...can you get it through your hotel, say Pop Century, or is it best to get back to the airport and get it there? Thanks for your insight!
