The best part of the descent is the first drop. From inside the car, you cannot see the track below, and it looks as if you are dropping into a void.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Maine. The red building in the center of the picture is the bell house and the white tower behind it held the clockwork mechanism to ring the bell when the point was shrouded in fog. The red building on the left held the fuel [whale oil, kerosene] that was used to light the lamp at in the lighthouse proper. It was built that far away so in the event it caught fire, it would not destroy the lighthouse.
