I came across a spreadsheet from 2015 which i used to compare various WDW package prices. Strictly out of curiosity, I decided to compare those to 2017 prices. Discounts change year over year but most of the costs (below) are done without discounts so you have an apples to apples comparison. I couldn't believe my eyes on some of them.

The 2017 costs are in parentheses:

Apr 3 - 11 (8 nights)
CSR, Std view, 6-day tix - $2994 (CBR - $3546)

Apr 3 - 11 (8 nights)
WL, Std view, 6-day tix - N/A ($5563 - no discount)

Apr 3 - 11 (8 nights)
AKL, Std view, 6-day tix - $4068 ($4297); both incl discount

Sep 18 - 26 (8 nights)
WL, Std view, 6-day tix - $4050 ($4889); neither has discount

Sep 18 - 26 (8 nights)
CSR, Std view, 6-day tix - $2997 ($3364); neither has discount

Sep 18 - 26 (8 nights)
BW, Std view, 6-day tix - $4868 ($5775); neither has discount

Sep 18 - 26 (8 nights)
CR, Garden Wing view, 6-day tix - $4992 ($5588); neither has discount

Wow! Reminds me the feeling I got when in booked our May trip - we came to WDW in 2011 and I must say it's around 30-40% more expensive!

But you have to consider how much stuff they've added to the parks since then . . .
Even since 2011 there hasn't been many new add-ons. Especially we are going before Pandora opens, and no more backlot at DHS.

But still very excited to be going back after 6 years - especially since it will be DS4's first visit!

Yeah, I didn't even mention all the stuff that has gone away. :(

Regardless, I'm glad you're excited about your trip, and I hope your son's first visit is amazing!

So, the percentage of increases below is approximate. So, I get a 2% raise each year and my medical premiums go up 12 % and my deductibles go up $1,000 a year and my co-insurance goes from 80% to 85%. Which means while my income goes up slightly, I'm actually taking home less money than I did in 2015. Not Disney's concern, but with a 6%-16% increase in vacation packages, plus the increase in transportation and food, It's not a surprise, we have not been to WDW since 2014 after going once or several times a year since 1996. I'm guessing a lot of working people are in the same situation.

2015 2017 Approx. Inc.
2994 3546 16%
5563 0
4068 4297 6%
4050 4889 12%
2997 3364 11%
4868 5775 16%
4992 5588 11%

Don't forget the outrageous food price increases. Those are the worst offenders IMO. The cost of eating at WDW is now prohibitive. Coupled with the fact that every table service requires a reservation, and every QSR requires a long wait (thanks to staffing optimization) and the dining experience is in the crapper.

But aren't you happy they have a 24.4% margin in the parks?

I really think Orlando is the cash cow and they're trying just to see how far they can push it. So far it seems like there is some newbie with money to burn ready to take the place of every disenchanted oldbie. I think with population growth, etc. it will be surprising how far they can push this.

You're absolutely right. I sort of touched briefly on the subject when I said rising costs of transportation and food. The simple act of 3 meals a day has become a competitive event in just trying to get an ADR for anything except the least popular venues. The lines for food and lack of seating at most QS locations (think Cosmic Ray's) are crazy. Once you get past that, the price of food is rising faster than any other expense in the parks.

This is about what I expected to see considering they go up 5-10% each year. Part of me actually thought it would be a little higher.

This is based on the information provided by the OP. I'm sure different resorts and different times of year would produce even higher percentages of increase.

It's certainly a challenge now between the rising costs, requisite planning, meal competitions and overall crowds. Yikes.

And they can get away with it because they know most families will not spend an hour or so each way to exit the park, get in their car, drive someplace else and eat there (especially at MK).

Actually we just booked the same room type for Thanksgiving 2017 as we had for 2015 at the Wilderness Lodge with no discounts and it was within $5 of the 2015 rate, of course that is just room and tickets and I'm still holding out for free dining.
