Warner Bros. is going back to the Willy Wonka well. Variety reports that the studio has acquired the rights to the character from the Roald Dahl Estate and is developing an original prequel story for the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory character. The story will be an original one not based on either of Dahl’s books and will tell an early adventure of the candy maker.

The prequel will not be an origin story and if there are sequels, it is possible that other characters from the series such as Charlie Bucket may appear. David Heyman (the Harry Potter films) is producing from a script to be written by Simon Rich (Man Seeking Woman).

The character has been used for two films to date: 1971’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in which the late Gene Wilder played Willy Wonka and Warner’s 2005 film from Tim Burton that starred Johnny Depp.
