Tower of Terror re-imagineering

I consider DHS's Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to be one of the greatest rides ever made. Growing up and making frequent visits to WDW, I was of course fascinated by all of it, but no ride captured my fascination nearly as much as Tower of Terror. I think we can all agree that when it comes to attention to detail, creative backstory, and impressive ride design, Tower of Terror is top notch. To this day its still one of the most impressive ride systems in existence.

Having said that... in addition to needing some TLC, there is room for improvement, especially with the special effects technology available today. Here are some of my ideas:

The weakest aspect of DHS's Tower is generally considered to be the 5th Dimension scene. Yes, for first time riders, the elevator leaving the shaft and moving forward is an impressive surprise, but the scene itself is mediocre. In fact, very few people ever actually "get" what the scene is supposed to be! When the doors to the scene open, you are supposed to be "on your back", ascending an elevator shaft vertically. For confirmation, look for the sideways elevator doors, lights, and signs on the sides. As you "ascend" the shaft, the walls disappear and reveal the Twilight Zone-y stuff behind them, ending with a portal that transports your service elevator into the original elevator shaft that the "incident" happened in so it can happen to you, too.

In addition to not really making much sense to most people, the effects in the scene are honestly pretty tacky, especially compared to the much more visually impressive first scene. Another issue I've always had is that you are only seeing the stuff from the Twilight Zone opening sequence. The Twilight Zone is not really an actual "other worldly" realm in the show, anyway, and more of a metaphor for the ironic, the bizarre, the supernatural situations the characters in the show experience.

I propose an entirely new scene for that segment that would be creepy, visually impressive, and also expand on the Hollywood Tower Hotel story and allow you to see more of the hotel:

Gut the whole current scene (except maybe the starfield portal doors), and make it... the Tip Top Club. Hear me out! Picture if you will: The elevator doors open. You see a long abandoned, dark, lifeless, creepy nightclub. Visual cues and signs would indicate that it is, in fact, the Tip Top Club, and you are seeing it as it was left in 1939 - perhaps a banner could read "Halloween 1939 or something. On one side of the room are large windows and it is clearly storming outside. On the other side, a stage.

An old timey record player in the center of the beginning of the scene (between where the two elevator shaft routes combine) illuminates and activates by itself as your elevator begins to move forward. Music similar to the queue BGM (I'm picturing specifically We'll Meet Again by Vera Lynn) begins playing, and with it, the scene "comes alive" and illuminates. Borrowing from the made-for-TV movie, the woman in the elevator appears on stage and is performing the song you hear. The other four elevator passengers appear around the scene. With today's projection technology (think of The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow as a demo) this could be done in a very visually impressive way. All of a sudden a loud, close crash of lightning with a blinding flash from the windows hits, and everything goes lifeless and dark again, just before you reach the starfield portal. There could be more detail than this, this is just a general idea.

Why would the elevator be moving through the club? Well first, in the first scene you are already "transported" to another dimension in the starfield anyway (your elevator is floating in space), so it doesn't really matter where your elevator goes next as it is no longer in the physical service elevator shaft (from a story standpoint). Second, it makes at least as much sense as the current scene, while expanding on the story.

So that's my biggest idea. I'd also like to see some technical upgrades like:
- full surround sound in the vehicle lifts
- new lighting effects and upgrades all around
- more effects in during the drop sequence - for instance, at DCA, the lights in the elevator pulse and flicker during the drop sequence as if the elevator is surging with electricity - it works well and actually adds to the excitement and sensation of movement.
- more than 4 drop sequences (yes, there are only 4.)

So those are my ideas/armchair imagineering/wishful thinking. Let me know what you guys think!

I like your technical upgrades. I would be afraid to touch anything else because I'd hate to break something that isn't really broken.

Tower is my favorite attraction obviously. I like everything about it from the architecture, story, costumes, music, theme, IP tie-in, ride system, thrill, etc.

One thing that isn't so much an idea, but something I've always pictured in my mind was comparing the song Hotel California to the Tower of Terror and how the Tower of Terrors storyline could fit into that song and vice versa with a few creative changes to the a lyric or two.

and cut! Up until here the post is perfect. And yes, I too never realised you are supossed to go upwards.
The idea below doesn't really work for me, even if I see where it's coming from. I would also love that sort of stuff somewhwre in DHS - an AA/projection based ride set in DHS' Golden Hollywood Era! But as a show scene in ToT it comes too late in the ride.

Comments in red. The technical upgrades would be terrific.

If it ain't broke don't fix it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WELL IT WAS JUST AN IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And if you don't like the Tip Top Club idea, I think most of us could agree that the 5th Dimension scene could use at least some sort of improvement? I mean, come on, you can see the wires that hold up the "floating" props. And you could be seeing something much better than just the Twilight Zone opening sequence, which, again, is not actually a part of the actual show in any way. If you consider this "perfect", then you are just attached to the current scene because its what you know. They could do much better with current technology. It doesn't even have to be projections.

I like where you're going, I find the plastic ghost figures in the 5th dimension to be completely unrealisic, and the effect where the photo of the elevator passes the eyeball always takes me out of the moment.

That being said, going to the Tip Top Club (My Namesake) wouldn't really make sense for a story standpoint either, as the ghosts were on their way to the Club when they died. If we are supposed to be repeating what happened to them, we would never get to see the club...

I'm sorry but this is just a forum to have fun and imagine ideas, so I'm not sure why you're jumping down my throat for suggesting a change. Also, if you had read the thread I linked to, Tower is, in fact, "broke." Because they've neglected it like so many other rides at WDW.

Don't worry what others say, Walt Disney was always looking for ways to plus things at Disneyland, even if technically nothing was wrong with them. Even if Tower wasn't broken, changes and updates can be nice. I like your ideas.

The Tower of Terror is my favorite so thank you for the explanation of what we are supposed to be seeing in that 5th Dimension scene. The only thing that matters to me currently is the starfield portal, which is awesome. I didn't know its name, so thank you for that, too.

Personally, I liked your original idea. Don't let other opinions make you second guess the idea - it was a good one, even if not perfect.

Because the 5th Dimension scene is abstract and not well understood, it would not bother me if it were redone to be replaced. Were the elevator riders on the way to the Tip Top Club? Maybe some were, but not all of them. The bellhop is clearly taking luggage to a room and a club is no place for such a young girl. The creepy Tip Top Club would be a nice bookend to the creepy lobby.

Thanks! I don't know if the starfield effect has an actual name, I just called it that because its... a field of stars that opens up some sort of portal, lol.

Oh, and for more evidence that, from a story perspective, the 5th dimension scene transports your service elevator into the main elevator shafts (which it also does via the ride path), the elevator doors at both the beginning and end of the ride have a B on them, for basement level, yet you are in a different area of the hotel at the end of the ride. Physically, you actually board on the 2nd floor of the building and depart on the ground floor, but from a story perspective, its the same floor.

Additionally, I find that if I am not on the front row, the cage of the elevator blocks my view of those effects to make the show elements even less effective.

I never thought we were repeating what happened to the prior inhabitants of the elevator car. The eyeball and clock and other effects just remind me of the 1950s TV show. A deserted, abandoned club occupied by spirits would make the 5th Dimension equivalent to the Haunted Mansion's attic scene!

Didn't they add something from the DCA ToT in the 5th Dimension scene?

For the Summer Nighttastic promotion a few years ago they gave the 5th Dimension scene a (cheap) makeover, and the starfield was replaced with an image of everyone in the elevator that faded out so you "disappeared" oooh spooky. Except it wasn't cool in any way like the DCA mirror scene, because it was a still image. At the very least, after this, the eyeball once again returned to showing an image of your elevator and not a generic elevator.

Yes, yes, and yes.

It's not just out of sheer cheapness that DCA and WDSP left out the 5th dimension scene. It just doesn't add much to the story. The effect of 'my elevator is moving out of its shaft' is not the show-stoppr they say it is. And as a fifty foot darkride it is just underwhelming, a few white props on strings.

If you sit in the back, you can't see all props. Sit in front, you see the tracks and strings.

If I were ever to plus ToT, it would be the 5th dimension. Everything else about the ride is awesome.

Gotta say I love every idea you had in the post! I've ridden ToT a dozen or so times and I've seen my fair share of original Twilight Zone episodes, and I can say I never would have guessed that you're supposed to feel that you're moving upwards when the elevator car is moving forward... That said I really like the club idea, gives me the image of the nightclub you encounter early on in the first Bioshock game. Abandoned and a mess but not destroyed, and then it all comes to life again with your arrival. Would love to see it happen!

I especially like the idea of re-living the lightening strike. With visual and audio effects being what they are today this could be an awesome and frightening effect. For anyone who has been close to a real lightening strike it can be pretty terrifying. They could even add a heat effect so you can really feel the proximity to the lightening.

I actually like the idea. Although I think since the lady from the elevator never makes it to the 13th floor having her there would add some problems. I still think your idea would be much better and provide a much more immerse experience. Snaps for you! *snaps*
