My husband and I are renting a car for the first time. we arrived last night but didn't have enough change for the last toll which was 75 cents. There was only one lane and no one manning it for change like the previous 2toll stops. There was an envelope for us to take and mail it in so we had no choice but to grab an envelope and drive away with the alarm going off because we didn't pay. Has anyone run into this and had problems? I have the check ready to be mailed and I wrote the date, time and plate number on the check as instructed. I'm kind of worried they will try to give my husband a ticket or something.

Tickets take a while to be processed. If you mail the check in a timely manner you should be fine.

First, if they *did* send a ticket, it would be mailed to the registered owner of the car, which would be the rental company. They would then forward a bill onto you, probably with hefty processing fee added to it (which is probably listed somewhere way down in your rental agreement)

But that being said, you won't have any problems if you mail it in right away.

I was a toll collector here in Massachusetts one summer in college. The procedure for people who had no money to pay the toll (which only happened to me once or twice in the 3 months I worked there) was pretty much the same. Give them an envelope, have them fill out the info on the slip, tear off the slip and let them have the envelope (and double-check the plate number as they drove away). The slip got turned in with the daily paperwork. If the driver didn't pay within 30 days (either by mailing it in or turning it into any other toll collector), it would turn into a ticket.
