Trip Report That time I dislocated my kneecap in WDW...

Hi friends :) I’ll get back to that title in a little bit, I’m much better now but that certainly put an unwelcome twist on the trip. My best friend, trying to make me feel better, said I'm lucky-who gets to experience a hurricane and dislocate their kneecap both in Disney within a few months. She does have a point ;)

But first...a couple months ago, right before I went on my November trip, I was already getting bummed because I didn’t know when I’d be going back (I have problems:oops:…). That same day my cousin texted me saying she had a meeting in Orlando January 14th and asked if I wanted to fly down for the weekend and join her at Disney for a couple days. Well, DUH :D
We didn’t really talk about it much in the next few weeks until we saw each other over thanksgiving. My aunt was on board and I wanted my mom to come too but she said no – it’s too much trouble for her to ask off of work. I was bummed but understand the position she is in so didn’t push it – I also had an idea up my sleeve…
I suggested to my dad that we give my mom this trip for Christmas. I talked to her boss about getting the time off, explaining we wanted to surprise her etc and it was no problem. In the meantime, my cousin tells me that her little ones will be coming along, an even better surprise that once my mom found out about, she wouldn't miss this for anything.
SO I tell my mom the trip isn’t happening – made up an excuse about having mandatory things at work I really can’t get out of so my cousin is just going to the meeting and not spending any time at Disney. A relief for my mom so she didn’t have to worry about work. ;)
Christmas morning comes, my mom unwrapped her magicband and she was SO confused and excited when she figured out all our scheming. We let her unwrap gift certificates for the dining plan (something we never do), photopass, our hotel & flights, then the kids magicbands. Until that moment she thought it was just my aunt, cousin and me. She couldn’t believe it! What was even more exciting is that the trip was less than 3 weeks away!
My cousin didn’t tell the kids until New Years and they were just as excited!

So here we are –

Me
Eliska – 6.5
Julian – 4.5
Michelle- my cousin
Phyl- My Mom/Auntie to the kids :)
Bev – My Aunt/Nonna to the kids

We were in Orlando from Friday January 13th – Tuesday January 17th.
My mom and I stayed Friday night at Port Orleans French Quarter
Michelle & Fam stayed at a nearby hotel where her conference was going on
Saturday we all switched to a Cars Suite at Art of Animation

Hope you'll join along! :)

Oh my goodness Samantha! Your cruise looks like such a blast! Wish I'd remembered to dvr GMA the day that segment aired. My sister and I are talking about taking a Disney cruise with our families next year. Some of them need a bit of convincing. I think I will show them some of your beautiful photos to tip the scales in my favor :).
I am super sad about Wishes ending ! It is one of my favorites on every trip and I watch it every chance I get. It just makes me so happy . I listen to the soundtrack all the time and all my favorite Disney memories come flooding back :inlove:. Glad your friends enjoyed it and you were able to see it before it ends!
You should definitely do the cruise with your families!! I hope the pictures help ;) This one was short so it was a good taste of what one was like.
Ditto about Wishes:cry::cry:

OMG!!!! I'm obsessed with all these pictures the cruise looked so awesome! Ginger Zee was one of our favorites from DWTS so I had to call my Mom and show her the pictures (via Facetime). Loved how you got to go to the bridge of the ship! Love all your character pictures. I have been gushing over this post forever. You have the best job ever :)
You need to do a cruise!! I feel like i've been saying that to everyone, but really it was amazing! It actually felt like a vacation (even though we were busy with work and only there 3 days) but the whole vibe is just relaxed as oppose to the parks, but you're still totally immersed in Disney!
I love that Ginger was one of your favorites on dancing!! She's like a sister to me:joyfull: so lucky we get to work together!

Great pictures!!!!! Cool adventures on the cruise. Good for you.
Thank you so much!! Such a fun time.

So happy you had such an amazing time on the cruise!!! :)
Thank you!! You need to go!!

BOTH of your trips sound amazing. I am blown away by how cool your job sounds! Looking forward to hearing more about your trip!
Thank you!! It can be pretty fun sometimes :)

Back to the original report!
I left off with our walk over to EPCOT from Hollywood Studios

This was the first weekend of the Festival of the Arts and EPCOT was CROWDED! We didn’t stop for anything, just walked around the world showcase. Which I now regret after coming home and reading how much everyone loved the festival! Hopefully it'll be back next year.

When we got to Norway, we decided to see Anna & Elsa!

While in line, Jules was getting a little impatient & his mask wasn’t sitting right. Nothing seemed to be helping and he took off the mask and threw it on the ground. My cousin put him in the corner where we were waiting in line and he stood there for a minute without making a peep and then yelled “bad mommy!” hahaha – everyone around us was trying not to laugh but it was so funny and came out of nowhere. We moved up in line a little and my cousin was talking to him and he goes “just because someone throws their toy does not mean you put them in time out!” Again- everyone is trying not to laugh. Then he snapped out of it, put his mask back on and all was better. We’re still joking about that “bad mommy!” :D

Finally we got to Anna & Elsa and the kids were so cute! My mom had to show Anna her Frozen Alex & Ani bracelet haha

We all wanted a drink but the lines for all the kiosks were crazy! We ended up at the Mexico kiosk and all got a margarita – I think it was mandarin ginger? It was good, but they were really expensive. A better margarita from La Cava Del Tequila would have been cheaper.

We took some pictures around EPCOT and specifically this figment one for my sister, his number one fan haha.

We had just enough time before our late lunch/early dinner reservation for Soarin! We had a decent wait but my mom and I knew it would be worth it. They LOVED it! Their faces say it all:D

It was time for our reservation at GARDEN GRILL!!:):)

My cousin wanted to do a character meal for the kids, my mom & I love it and knew they would too. From our last time there, we loved the late lunch seating as we were pretty much the only ones there and that happened again this time.

And then I dislocated my kneecap…:banghead::arghh::cry::mad:

I wish I had a better story, but all that happened was the CM escorted us to our table and I just slid into the booth. I must have twisted it in some weird way but I felt my kneecap slide to the side of my leg and back (thankfully it went back by itself hah). The pain was unbelievable and I was just as mad and in disbelief as I was in pain.

The first time this happened was a year ago (actually a year and two days from this day, my mom and I had just been talking about how we couldn’t believe it was already a year). Again with a lame story-slipping on a marble floor. Except I was on a work trip away from home and that time the kneecap didn’t go back and ended up with a trip to the hospital, a giant brace, crutches and the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. I couldn’t move a muscle in my body without it hurting. ALL of this was rushing back into my head- would I be able to walk? Do I have to go to the hospital again? Don’t let the kids see you upset. Or the characters as they already started coming by. And don’t get sick, I instantly felt so nauseous. Plus we still had two more days in Disney – I can’t go to the hospital or be on crutches or be in any kind of pain like I was a year ago:banghead:

The CM’s were all wonderful and kept ice coming for my knee and checking on me. I liked their ice packs hah.

I started to feel better when I realized I was able to move my leg, plus having my cousin go into doctor mode was reassuring. I knew I wasn’t in the same bad place I was a year ago when it happened the first time– but then I started to get so frustrated. WHY did this have to happen (ever again) but especially in the middle of our trip??!

Once I calmed down some I was able to kind of enjoy the meal. The characters were a great distraction and the kids had SO MUCH FUN. They came by the table several times, on Chip’s first trip he saw me and the tears then came back to give me a hug, sit next to me and insisted on a selfie haha.

Everyone was a fan of Garden Grill afterwards from the characters to the food and the atmosphere!

Oh my goodness, you poor thing! I tore a ligament in my foot on my one (non-Disney) cruise. Luckily it was on our last day at sea before returning or I'd have felt like you. I'm sure I would've gotten better assistance on a Disney cruise than I did on the other cruise line. It certainly wasn't the "fun ship" cruise that they advertise.

I did the same thing about a year ago (a ridiculous story better left unshared :hilarious:) - It was unbearable! Mine popped right back into place on its own too but holy man did it hurt. I got instantly nauseous and was in quite a bit of pain for a week or so. I would have been so upset to have it happen at Disney! BUT glad you're okay and the rest of your trip wasn't totally ruined! :)

Ugh! I can't believe you can dislocate your knee so easily. I am not the most coordinated creature to walk the earth so this really makes me think that I need to be extra careful! My daughter's volleyball teammate dislocated her kneecap in a tournament game last weekend. Poor girl, she was really in pain, so I can imagine how you felt. Glad the kids and characters were a distraction and that the CMs were so helpful. So glad that your kneecap went back by itself and it wasn't any worse.

How awful! An injury on any vacation isn't fair.

My goodness, I can't believe what a good sport you were about your knee. That sound incredibly painful. I'm glad you were still able to soldier on.
Thanks! I was trying so hard to not let it ruin everything.

Right?! It just makes me scared if that was all it took, when will it happen again?:(
I feel for your daughter's volleyball teammate! :( Hope she is feeling better by now.

Ugh, I'm squirming at my desk just thinking about your knee! At least it popped back in:eek:. Loved the Garden Grill pics!
Love that place! Dislocated knee or not

Oh my goodness, i've fallen SO far behind on this (and everything) but i'm determined to finish this up in the next few days!!

Left off finishing dinner post kneecap dislocation and a full night of plans ahead at Hollywood Studios that night, I didn’t want to just go back to the hotel and miss out on everything. I was able to walk – slowly and carefully and insisted on staying.

My cousin kept saying she thinks I need a wheelchair, which I was very very against. Even though I was walking okay enough, it was more of a concern for everyone else around me. Plus as soon as I got home from this trip, I was on a plane the next day for an important work trip so I couldn’t let myself get any worse. I know she was right and eventually she won that battle and on our way over to Hollywood Studios had made several phone calls and was able to have one delivered to the hotel that night that we could use for the remainder of the trip.

Our main reason for going back to Hollywood Studios was the star wars fireworks! I knew it was a can’t miss for the kids. When we got there we grabbed a spot to watch and left my mom there:hilarious: We had split our FP’s so my cousin and the kids went to Star Tours while my aunt and I went to Tower of Terror! I was NOT missing my favorite ride.

When we got back , Jules was in full death trooper mode:p

Finally fireworks time :)

Everyone loved the fireworks!
The park was closed after this so we headed back to the resort. (ps- another night missing out on a visit to the poly:()

The wheelchair was there waiting for us and against my will, I sat down. I just hate to be an inconvience and like to be the one in control, putting me in a wheel chair meant I lost that…and giving it up in Disney was the hardest part of all.

Eliska immediately started to push me which she thought was so funny – and it was! She was also pretty good at it haha.

We stopped for an ice cream treat then went up to our room to relax. Quite a day!

MONDAY-JANUARY16th
The plan for this day was to start at Animal Kingdom just to do the safari before going to Magic Kingdom for our lunch reservation and the rest of the day.

THRILLED to be in the wheelchair, and kind of ironic that I was wearing my “Best Day Ever” shirt haha

We were having some ticket issues and ended up spending a TON of time at guest services. They were able to fix everything but taking up so much time ended up messing up the plan to hit the safari and head over to MK. By the time we got over there, the wait was up to an hour – there was no way we had time to wait an hour, go on the ride, then wait for a bus to MK and still make our noon lunch.

My cousins had never been to Animal Kingdom before so they were still happy to see it and we had a nice walk around the park. Or at least I had a nice ride around the park – with a seatmate haha. The kids kept taking turns sitting on my lap.

We stopped for some pictures on our way out and the photopass photog was probably the best I’ve ever had. He was so much fun and so great with the kids.

He told Eliska to stick out her hand, and Julian to point. He asked them if they wanted to know what they were holding/looking at and when they replied yes, he said CHICKEN NUGGETS! Which got the cutest reaction!

But they were really holding tink ;)

We headed out of the park to make our way over to MK :)
