Through 2016, participation in runDisney events continues to increase. While individual race numbers level off or even drop, the addition of events has increased capacity and participation.

    Disclaimers

There is an inherent bias in these numbers simply because runDisney has capped registration and increased the caps over the years. External influences must be taken into account when looking at trends.

    These numbers only reflect finishers.

These numbers do not include the 5K races as they are not published.

2017 grand totals are not included as the year is not yet complete. Also, 2017 will be an outlier due to the cancellation of the January WDW half.

Everything I state here is opinion. I have no inside information. But, except for non-finishers and the 5Ks, the numbers are direct from Active.com and runDisney.

Here's the bottom line for runDisney. This is total finishers for all events, 10K, half and marathon.

    Individual Challenge Trends.

Since every Dopey gets a Goofy I thought the Goofy numbers should be adjusted. That adjustment is the grey Goofy - Dopey line. Regardless, Goofy participation is down. The challenge trends are probably statistically insignificant since they are fairly new (except for Goofy) and capped.

Marathon weekend. What happened to that green total line? Well, again, the half was cancelled.

Disneyland weekend (Labor Day). Big jump with the addition of the Double Dare but it's definitely trending down. We don't know if runDisney is dropping the cap or we're losing interest. It's kind of a boring half marathon through some shady parts of Anaheim. This drop may be the reason for the new Pixar theming this year and, frankly, the reason I decided to go back is for the Pixar bling. Curious to see what the 2017 numbers will look like.

Disneyland Light Side / Resistance. It's new but trending up. But I have a feeling this one will be down in 2018 due to the delayed registration.

The Princess Half Weekend. Thought this was really interesting. It's obviously still popular but look what happened to the half when the 10K was added.

The Dark Side. Down a bit but it's only two data points. My gut tells me all the Star Wars news will keep this level. The problem with this half, it's kind of dull and it's April in Florida.

Tinker Bell. Fairly level with a slight drop in the half. Probably capped. But no drop due to the 10K.

Wine & Dine. I'm surprised the half didn't drop after it moved to mornings. The new challenge may have made up for that disappointment. Wonder what happened in 2012? Big jump in the cap?

Super Heroes. This is the least popular half, even less than Paris. Just noticed the 10K passed the half? That's a twist.

So that's it for now. If anyone wants to see a different graph just post your idea here. I'll probably update this when the fall races finish.

@dreamfinder, can we merge this thread with the one you started? Can't read that great right now to review Texas' charts, but this is interesting.

Did you take the relay into account with the half totals? Just wondering if that had anything to do with the earlier data points.

Also, the first year was a cluster and I know it turned a lot of people off from coming back the second year. I think time healed some wounds and many returned to give it another chance (or heard the horror stories and stayed away until things were a bit more organized - emphasis on "a bit more", haha!).
