R.I.P. BERNARD FOX OF 'BEWITCHED' AND 'HOGAN'S HEROES'
Bernard Fox, a character actor best known for his recurring roles as Dr. Bombay on Bewitched and Colonel Crittendon on Hogan's Heroes, passed away Wednesday at the age of 89.
Born in 1927, Fox was born into a family of stage actors. According to Variety, the performer started his career in the entertainment industry at a young age, working as an assistant manager of a theater at the age of 14.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Fox began making brief appearances in films and television shows like Make Room for Daddyand The Andy Griffith Show. Fox was a regular cast member on the short-lived British sitcom Three Live Wires in 1961.
His two most notable roles came around the same time in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1965, Fox made one of several guest appearances as the bumbling Col. Crittendon on the sitcom Hogan's Heroes.
In 1967, Fox appeared as the witch doctor Dr. Bombay on the supernatural sitcom Bewitched. Despite appearing in fewer than 20 episodes, he reprised the role on the spin-off series Tabitha in 1977 and the soap opera Passions in 1999.
After Hogan's Heroes and Bewitched wrapped in the early '70s, Fox continued to make guest appearances on shows like M*A*S*H, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat and The Jeffersons.
Fox's film career rebounded in the late 1990s with prominent roles in two blockbusters — James Cameron's 1997 drama Titanic and Stephen Sommers' 1999 action film The Mummy.
Fox starred in two movies about the sinking of the RMS Titanic. In 1958, Fox had an uncredited role in the film A Night to Remember.
