I wanted to share something that I've been very passionate about. I've been collecting Vinylmation since the very first series - Park #1, but even before buying my first blind box, my mind was racing with the possibilities of what could be created on the Mickey-shaped canvas. I actually initially went to Downtown Disney with the intention of buying a blank "Create Your Own" Vinylmation that day, but when I found they were sold out, I said what the heck, I'll just get a blind box from this Park #1 set and see what it's all about. There were only two figures I was really hoping I might receive, and upon opening the box I was disappointed to learn I got one "that wasn't even on the box!" I learned quickly that I actually just pulled "the chaser" - one that would years later prove to be one of the most single sought after Vinylmation figures to ever be released. I was hooked.
Once the blank figures were finally restocked, I was excited to at long last get the chance to test my creativity on them and immediately started painting. It quickly got to a point that my collection was becoming more custom than official figure, and I wasn't the list bit upset about that. One of my first custom figures was a Tower of Terror bellhop - a costume that I'd personally worn for nearly 15 years when I had worked for Disney. I loved how it turned out. I branched out and started making a few of the other costumes I'd personally worn between Disney and Universal over the years. From there they started becoming personalized gifts for friends on special occasions, and from there it took off like wildfire.
For a long while now I've been wanting to find the time to share some of these figures here on WDWMagic, knowing the group is a great mix of both passionate Disney fans as well as many current and former Disney Cast Members! I'm incredibly proud to say that over the past few years, I've created figures for every single Disney theme park, and have mailed them to Cast Members of the Disneyland Resort, Disneyland Paris and even Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan! The most flattering aspect of it all is that many of those CMs were so excited when they received their figure that they actually changed their personal Facebook profile photo to be one of their new Vinylmation! It's a super cool feeling to see that!
What's neat about these figures is the are all completely personalized. Each figure has the hair color, eye color, gender and ethnicity of the Cast Member they were modeled after. The final products even have the CM's actual name printed on the figure's tiny name tag (though all the pictures I share publicly have generic titles on the name tag to keep them neutral - for example, a Twilight Zone Tower of Terror figure is pictured as "BELLHOP" on the name tag instead of "CHRIS" as mine reads.)
