Is "Carousel of Progress" Open ?

I heard rumors that the "Carousel of Progress" is open only during holidays and that it is being updated. Then I read that it might close. It would be a shame as it was one of the few attractions actually supervised by Walt himself and tells the story of electricity. I also heard that "The Timekeeper" will close but I also read that it is being refurbished. What's the latest?

Search Timekeeper in the forums and you'll find information about the new Laugh Floor Comedy Club which is going into its place. Happy hunting!

CoP is supposedly just open seasonally when there are large crowds in the parks. I did ride it during some extra magic hours in Feb 2005. It is basically at the whim of the park. I say if it is open then jump on. It's a relaxing ride, good place to cool off and rest your feet. And hey, "It's a great big beautiful tomorrow..."

While officially listed as "seasonal" it's been open non-stop, every day for about two years now.

Someone posted on this forum that supposedly, Walt Disney said before he died that don't ever close Carrousel of Progress as long as the parks remain open. But then again, the one is Disneyland was closed a long time ago.

Here's the link:

Actually, it did not close. It moved to WDW. While the parks have clones of other attractions, there has only been one and only one COP. First at the Worlds Fair in 1964-65, then DL and now WDW.:sohappy:

My not-so-secret wish is that they would fiddle with the time periods a bit to incorporate some of the ideas from Horizons. If they jumped from the mid-1800s to the mid 1900s, then to the present and on to the far future, the ride might not become dated again so quickly.

Of course, this would require a complete rehab on the scale of Disneyland's New Space Mountain, something which is unlikely to happen.

Why go that small? Start it in neaderthal times, keep the same AA father that they have now, but dress him in bear skin:
"Why hello there! Come gather round, did you see this new thing we have? It's called "fire"! It's the greatest, it keeps evil spirits away, and now we don't get sick when he eat mastadon meat! I tell ya, this is a great age. And we have new neighbors too, a family of Cro-Magnons just set up a camp nearby, i'm sure we'll be the best of friends! Ooooooh, its a great big..."

I agree - they really need to update the final scene. How difficult would it be to dress the "family" in modern clothes. Surely, Disney could afford a new dining set - that 80's version drives me crazy every time I see it!! Every time I go, I hold my breath waiting for the final scene - hoping that maybe they have updated - only to be disappointed!

Still, this ride is a classic and I hope they never close it...now if only they would return the old song. "Now is the time, now is the best time...."!!

Actually, the song that plays now, "Great Big Beautifull Tomorow", IS the return of the "old song". They changed it to "Now is the Time", then they changed it back.

I think they were just referring to the "old song" as the song that was used before "Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow."

Speaking for my 6 year old, I hope this ride never closes. There is not a day that goes by where she is not singing the songs from this ride. We orignally went on this ride in September as "resting" ride, but she quickly got hooked!

This will be the first ride we go on in when we arrive in 10 days!!!

It's great to know that a child that age can respect and enjoy such an amazing show and ride like the Carousel of Progress!

Have a great trip!
