Innoventions Habit Heroes closes for rework

The thing I find interesting about the story is how much play it gets simply because Disney's name is attached. I saw it on my comcast feed so I figured it was a big story. When I read it, I assumed it was some replacement for 'Body Wars' that I hadn't heard about because I don't pay enough attention.

. . . but then I realized it was one of those throw-away innoventions things from Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

I've been at a place in innoventions that talks about the wonders of Velcro®. Is Velcro® one of the most amazing things ever? We could probably debate that. Does Disney® think Velcro® is one of the greatest things ever? Probably not. They just leased out the space, provided a few suggestion, made sure the presenters weren't cursing or showing nudie pictures and that was probably about the extent of their involvement.

I'm sure their involvement in this display was similar, but because it's associated with Disney® it becomes a big story.

If anyone is really concerned that Disney is discriminating against fat kids, it would only take a 5 minute stroll around futureland to allay that fear.:lookaroun

I'm with you. This morning, Fox News, CNN, and HLN (love Robin Meade) all reported that a Disney attraction was closing. I immediately came here and did a web search to see what was going on until I figured out what it was. They were showing Epcot and (I assume) stock shots of Mission:Space, SSE, Energy, etc. When I figured out what was happening..... :brick:

oh sorry I just double posted this with the full news article. I think the decision to close and rework it is DISGUSTING. This "association" who complained to Disney should be ashamed of themselves. So now its not ok to tell kids to eat healthy and exercise to prevent them from becoming overweight and unhealthy?

I don't think that was why they complained. I think it was because they portrayed being overweight with being evil.

You're right! They are hard at work making some changes to the show. I hear they're going to rework the old song from World of Motion (It's Fun To Be Free).

The new song for the show will be "It's Fun To Be Fat".

Two of my favorite Innoventions exhibits.. why? because I can't fit on the Sum of All Thrills... and now I looked like a Super Villain. I know I'm fat but that was the most depressing thing that has ever happened to me in Disney Word when the restraint barely didn't click.. It was so close. I stood in that dark alley in between Innoventions and the Electric Umbrella and moped around for about 5 minutes afterwards.

I don't want to sound like I'm attacking you because that is not my intention at all but instead of moping about it why don't you make a real effort to exercise and loose weight? You will find that after a few months of hard work you will be looking better and feeling great. This is something that you are totally in control of.

Its not really that simple. Even when I was in good shape those type of restraints don't go down on my shoulders that well. I have lost weight and tried to make a difference. Herniated Disc is my problem right now and without being drugged its hard to do the exercise I need to make a great difference. Being that said I try to do as much as possible

Let me rephrase his post to prevent tensions...

The parents are obese as well, I say it should in the schools.

When the schools quit serving chicken nuggets, pizza, cheeseburgers, and sugary snacks, lets talk. But until then, schools and government need to stay out of peoples bedrooms and lunch boxes. K?

I saw this on Yahoo news, which in my opinion has the worst written and least informed articles, but since it said Disney I caved and read it anyways.

http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/disneys-habit-heroes-accused-fat-shaming-232300194.html

The article had so many things wrong with it, that makes me wonder how ignorant some people are. Part of it mentioned the food in Disney, and how because the food is fattening Disney is basically hypocritical by bringing out the new attraction. In my opinion Disney does have a couple of healthy options, but either way in the end its the parents choice regarding what children eat, Disney isn't forcing you to get fries with every meal.

It also mentioned how even in Disney movies, the villains are pinned as "fat", though the only example they gave was the Little Mermaid. The writer described how Ariel is skinny and wears a skimpy outfit, while Ursula, the villain, is basically fat/ugly thus portraying fat people as bad. It was weird, I don't know what the person who wrote the article was thinking.

The article took the whole issue a bit too far, so I think part of the issue is bad sources, like the wonderful writers over at Yahoo writing about things that they clearly know nothing about. (The article also had a number of grammatical mistakes, such as "Disneyworld" -__- )

Either way as an overweight person I'm not offended by it. I think it would appeal to kids to motivate them to learn about being healthy, which is something this country as a whole clearly needs. A lot of the comments on Yahoo mentioned how Disney was calling their kids fat, and you don't take your kids on vacation to be "scolded" about their weight... I just don't see the issue, I've struggled with my weight my whole life, and see nothing wrong with the exhibit.

-end rant-

My son and daughter loved this attraction - we experienced it three times. I think it was the adults who looked more uncomfortable.

As for the food served in Disney, we eat it sometimes, but often take our own sandwiches and frozen water in, which Disney are happy for you to do.

I am currently slightly overweight and tackling it, my kids eat very heathily, we all need to take responsibilty for ourselves and our childrens diets.

There's nothing wrong with encouraging better eating & exercise habits, which is exactly what they're doing. Is it wrong that they put out the Food Pyramid too?

The fact that programs to encourage healthy lifestyles are derided as communist/socialism, but no on bats an eye at Wendy's coming out with the Baconator, shows that society has a lot of work to do.

With Habit Heroes, it's commendable that they even attempted to tackle the problem. Problems comes with labeling people villians and heros. I wasn't offended by the way it was presented, but it's all too easily to see people who would be, especially at a place like WDW.

What they should have done, and they probably were aiming for, was have the two lifestyles presented side-by-side. "Joe runs everyday after school, jack plays video games everyday after school, etc" Or take it off of people...Food Rocks anyone? Fud Rapper has to towards the top of the landfill right?
