Increased Police Presence ?

Hey all, recently wandered through --and drove by-- Downtown Disney and I noticed the increased presences of Orange County Sherrif police cruisers and what I thought to be a K9 unit in the DTD area. I was wondering what was up for this to occur ?

This is all speculation on my part, but maybe it has to do with the Boston marathon bombing anniversary. DTD is not secured like the parks where people's bags are searched, so perhaps they're taking extra precautions there.

I have noticed in the last few months that the presence of Orange County Sheriffs has increased all over Disney property. Years ago you would never see them pulling people over on property. A couple weeks ago they were all over the roadways and had cars pulled over. Their presence in the parks has also picked up. Definitely needed.

Just a thought, but I've always noticed more uniformed police/security personnel at Disney around construction zones, and perhaps this is due to the fact that when construction is going on there's fewer ways for these people and their vehicles to move around and still be "off-stage".

Considering what some moron did last night with a "hoax" device, I would happily see a larger police presence in public areas. Sure we'd all prefer to not need this level of security, but unfortunately Disney is definitely a potential target. The amount of security your see is often outweighed by the security you don't see.

Exactly.

As the wife of someone who works closely with law enforcement, my knee-jerk reaction to this post is to say that there's no telling why there might be an increased presence of law enforcement. Sometimes they do that kind of thing based on a tip. Sometimes it's because of a potential risk or because of events that tend to need more security. Sometimes it's to make themselves visible in hopes of decreasing likelihood of anything beyond that being needed. Sometimes, there's more to it than this, but not always. Without knowing any more detail, anything else being said is pure speculation.

As @RSoxNo1 pointed out, though, just because they were more visible doesn't mean that there is necessarily an increase in security; it just means that they chose to be more visible for whatever reason.

So it is not just me that noticed it then ? Saw dozens of the police unmarked cruisers all around DTD area, even a few OCS's in Magic Kingdom wandering around as well; Personally though I was just confused of the increase and why all the polcie cruisers, they were all off the road and near all construction zones though

Wait, hoax device ? Could this be the reason of the increase in police presence around DTD ?

Could be that the expected increased crowds over the next two weekends prompted them to be more visible as a way of encouraging people to be more careful, and they could be strategically placing themselves around construction zones to ensure that the extra crowds don't end up meandering into areas where they don't need to be. Again, though, that's just a guess.

I'm not trying to overhype anything, I am simple curious of why the sudden increase, when we got here this morning there were barely any police around, mostly just Disney Security that I could see, it was not until we were headed for our hotel {offsite this trip, sadly} did my family take notice.

Unless you saw people being escorted away in handcuffs or other concrete evidence that something was "amiss," there's not really any way to know for sure why they were there.

Again, they chose when they are here. It could have been they all were bored and said let's go DTD. Or it could have been a call of suspicious activity so they responded with a visible presence. If there were bigger issues, you'd see more dressed clothed security managers rather than the blues.

That's very normal for this time of year. There are an increased guest population on property, the police are simply increasing their numbers to protect the populace. It happens every time the crowds get this big.

I have noticed an increase in road patrols, cops running radar and likewise. Both orange county, Osceola County, and Florida Highway Patrol. They appear to be cracking down on speeding on the world of drive and Epcot Center Drive. A vehicle that was tailgating me rather severely the other night got pulled over… I'm assuming it's because he was tailgating me while I was doing the speed limit.

But all this is normal for one of the busiest times of the year. Nothing to overthink.

I highly doubt it. DTD in general has more because of increased drinking and strong local presence. Don't overhype this at all.

Oh locals don't drink at downtown Disney anymore… Because it closes too damn early.

....Unless you're talking about Tuesday afternoons at the house of blues front porch featuring shows by the legendary Bob Jackson and Steve hoagie. Happy hour pricing on the porch.

Man, I guess I should look out. Never have seen them doing radar on property. I'm usually zooming through there too.
