Imagineering A W.Alternate Second Gate At Disneyland Resort

Back the 1990s, Michael Eisner, the CEO of The Walt Disney Company had the idea to turn Disneyland into a full-one multi day destination, this project was Very ambitious, and it had one of the most EXPENSIVE projects Disent would have ever built:

IMG_0323.jpeg

That concept was WESTCOT, something similar to EPCOT at Walt Disney World, WESTCOT was to feature multiple countries of the Earth’s 7 main continents like The Americas, Europe, Asia and more, but the project was without criticism, as many residents in Anaheim didn’t like the overall concept of WESTCOT, as they though it would be too attracting for those not visiting Disneyland, at the same time, Euro Disneyland (Now know as Disneyland Paris) had just opened and was a HUGE failure, and it lost so much money that most of the projects Disney were working on during the time were all scaled back or downright cancelled, and that was the case for WESTCOT. But the concept for a second gate for Anaheim continued, and after many days of Eisner decussing it with multiple imagineers, a second gate was finalized.

IMG_0325.jpeg

As for what WAS built where WESTCOT was planned, Disney’s California Adventure opened on February 8th, 2001. Unlike WESTCOT, DCA focused around the Golden State of California, and it had 4 areas, with one having 6 districts or neighborhoods:

IMG_0326.jpeg

The first was Sunshine Plaza, which was to represent entering a postcard, and the Icon from the entrance was The Sun Icon, which was to reflect the Californian sun, but unfortunately didn’t. Next, the cheapest area of the park was Hollywood Pictures Backlot, which featured the cringy Hyperion show Steps In Time and The Worst Dark ride Disney Ever Built, Superstar Limo.

IMG_0327.jpeg

Next up in the Parks Lineup was its biggest land, The Golden State, which had 6 districts or neighborhoods: Condor Flats featured the only successful ride in the Park, Soarin’ over California. Grizzly Peak, listed by Mount Grizzly had the only Water Ride in the park, Grizzly River Run, but had the Grand California Hotel and Spa connected to it alongside the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail playground. Bountiful Valley Farm educated visitors about California Farming while Pacific Wharf was basically the Food Court for the park. If you wanted to Drink in Disney, The Golden Vine Winery was your place to go, it also had Seasons Of The Vine, which taught visitors about winegrowing. Finally, The Bay Area was the smallest out of the 6 districts and had the show featuring Whoopi Goldburg called Golden Dreams, which was about Californian History.

IMG_0329.jpeg
Finally, Paradise Pier had the Most rides in the parks attraction lineup, including California Screamin’ which had the only inversion in the entire Disneyland Resort. But most of the rides in Paradise Pier were off-the-shelf fairground rides, such as The Sun Wheel, King Tritons Carousel of The Sea, Maliboomer, Orange Stinger, and Mulholland Madness.

Reception to DCA was negative, with many complaining that DCA was “Too California, Not Enough Disney.” This was a problem, because without the charm of Disney in a park of their own, the attendance would crash and burn, so Imagineers set off on a journey to fix DCA.

IMG_0330.jpeg

On June 15th, 2012, The park was rededicated. in the expansion, Sunshine Plaza was removed and replaced by Buena Vista Street, a recreation of 1920s California when Walt Disney arrived there. Hollywoodland closed Superstar Limo just a year after opening and replaced it with Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley To The Rescue! in 2006 which retold the story of the first film, also added in 2004 was The Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror, a clone of the ride from Orlando and Paris. Bountiful Valley Farm got a New Neighbor in 2002, particularly, ”a bug’s land” based around the 1998 Pixar Film and included 4 kiddie rides to add family friendliness to the Park, next door was Cars Land, based around the 2006 Pixar film, the land recreated Radiator Springs and had Radiator Springs Racers, which Many consider to be the ride that saved DCA. Pacific Wharf, Grizzly Peak and Condor Flats all stayed the same, Paradise Pier got plenty of changes throughout the renovation, including Toy Story Midway Mania!, Silly Symphony Swings, Goofy’s Sky School and The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure.

After the Opening of DCA 2.0, the park got crowds that were only going to Disneyland were now going to DCA, and the renovation was a success! To this day, DCA is one of the most favorite Disney Parks in the world and many come to DCA to experience the Thrils it offers.

But what if DCA never happened? What if WESTCOT was built? What if multiple scrapped concepts for Disneyland’s second gate were built instead of DCA? This thread will be the answer, as I will show you all the concepts THAT we could have gotten instead of DCA, so without further ado, let’s start Dreaming Up possibilities!!!

Part 1 ~ A Different California Adventure

IMG_0331.jpeg

Starting Off in a similar vein to @HomeImagineer ‘s Thread, is a W.Alternate version of Disney’s California Adventure. This version will combine elements from the park we got in 2001 with some other Disney Characters and IP.

Starting of entering DCA is a replica of The California Missions connected to Disney’s Californian Dreams Hotel and Spa, my take on the Grand Californian which we got In Real Life. On the sides of the Hotel is a mural like the one that was at the entrance of our DCA 1.0 before it was removed in 2011 for Buena Vista Street.

As we enter through The Hotel, we find ourselves in, well, a
Spanish Village! (I couldn’t think of a different entrance street) Inspired by @HomeImagineer once again! While the Village is set within 16th ~ 19th century California, some experiences in Spanish Village take inspiration from both Sunshine Plaza and Buena Vista Street. To the left of Spanish Village is Hollywood Pictures Backlot, Which features two sub-areas. Hollywood Boulevard, which is dedicated to 1940s Hollywood, and Mickey’s ToonTown, the fictional city where Mickey, Oswald and Roger Rabbit all call home. This section is entered through just entering the land through Spanish Village, but at the far left corner of Hollywood Boulevard is Avengers Campus, where all the Avengers Assemble.

Exiting Hollywood Pictures Backlot to the far right, we find a foreboding abandoned looking tower and the end of the street, passing by the tower we find a land much more inviting and colorful. This is
Pixar Place, where you can explore the worlds of Toy Story, ”a bug’s life,” Monsters Inc., The Incredibles, CARS and Ratatouille. This land gets its inspiration from @Imagineerland ’s Buildout of DCA back in 2016.

IMG_0332.jpeg

In the bug’s life section (which is just “a bug’s land”), we find an entrance to Bountiful Valley Farm, which takes inspiration from both @HomeImagineer and @Disneylover152 and is about Californian Farming. Just to the right of Bountiful is Paradise Pier, which is themed to a Turn-of-the-century Victorian Boardwalk, and while it’s similar to the DCA we got back in 2001 with elements from the 2012 overhaul, this Paradise Pier has more, alongside Surfing in a Disney Park!

IMG_0327.jpeg

Finally, we come to the last 3 land, with 2 of them representing Californias Great rustic outdoors. San Francisco is about the great city in California with attractions themed to its tourist destinations. Grizzly Peak National Park is indeed something similar to what we got IRL, but is more bigger since the Grand Californian (which is always a pain is the butt to avoid touching) isn't built here, and this Grizzly Peak also features the return of the classic Country Bears. Last but not least, Condor Flats features and shows elevation of a Californian Airfield.

So what do you think? Does this California Adventure feel more cohesive than the one we got in 2001? I’ll let you decide. Very Soon, we’ll explore this W.Alternate California Adventure starting with The Spanish Village! See you there!

@Disney Warrior i appreciate you liking my post for this thread, you're always so active and that’s amazing! Do you having any conversations for experiences (Rides, shows, dining, shopping, etc.) for this version of DCA?
I’ve got a few ideas for DCA, but I have many for WESTCOT.
The first is a Winchester Mystery House Dark Ride that probably suits your San Francisco area best:
Sarah Winchester’s Mysterious Mansion is a trackless dark ride in Paradise Gardens Park taking guests through the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, which served as an inspiration for The Haunted Mansion at the main park. The facade, while being much smaller than the real Winchester House, will be enlarged by way of forced perspective, a classic Disney illusion. Guests enter by way of a set of Wrought Iron Gates with cobwebs and queue through gardens with several bushes and flowers of all colors, shapes, and sizes dotted with statues.

Guests then load their vehicles at the front door. Vehicles enter the front doors after they swing open and immediately go through the first scene, a representation of a gallery of stained glass with lines by Shakespeare, where this attraction's Host says, “Welcome, curious guests to The Winchester Mystery House, the beautiful, bizarre mansion built by Sarah Pardee Winchester, heiress of the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune, in San Jose, California. Tormented by the guilt of victims lost to the Winchester Rifle, Madame Winchester built the dizzying Queen Anne-style structure with many odd and mysterious features. Doors that open to walls, stairways that lead to the ceiling, and many more oddities in the massive 160-room mansion. Was she simply interested in architecture, or haunted by spirits? Explore the halls and unlock the secrets to the world-famous home. Unlock doors or find yourself in terrifying rooms. Find your way in and out or walk in circles FOREVER! Ha ha ha ha ha!” As the narration plays, guests hear a music box rendition of Danse Macabre, the attraction's main theme.

Vehicles then move into two doors that creak open as cold air blasts out and the Host says, “Though some say that this mysterious house is nothing more than the product of an eccentric woman’s mind, others say that the very spirits that Sarah tried to please with the constant building, remain in residence.” Vehicles then enter The Grand Ballroom as the Host says, “One ghost that is said to linger is that of a handyman that continues to repair a fireplace in the Grand Ballroom. The black-haired man has often been seen pushing a spectral wheelbarrow or working on the fireplace. Others have reported feeling the “presence” of someone or something in the ballroom. The elegant gold and silver chandelier in the grand ballroom swings by itself on occasion.“ Vehicles go in and pass the ghostly handyman fixing the fireplace and the swinging chandelier. A ghostly orchestra plays Danse Macabre.

Vehicles then ascend a ramp as the Host says, “Behold Sarah's Attic, a newly discovered room. The space formerly boarded up and containing a pump organ, a Victorian couch, a dress form, sewing machines, paintings, china dolls, and several guns of the family brand. It's been boarded up since Sarah's death in 1922 and unexplored since. It's a spirited place for those "aiming" to encounter fun with a paranormal twist.” Guests enter the attic and see all the objects listed and the Ghost of Sarah Winchester. Dressed in a veil and glowing in a whitish-blue tint, she weeps for her husband and the lives lost at the hands of his rifle. Beside the ghost is an old photograph of Sarah and her husband William. The pump organ plays Danse Macabre.

Guests then descend a ramp, passing by an infinite staircase, with small steps that loop in a square shape and ghost footprints pacing about them. The Host says, “The Winchester Mystery House has 160 rooms including 40 bedrooms. We are about to enter one, but first let us behold the infinite staircase!” Vehicles then enter a bedroom where they see the ghost of a thin young woman resting suddenly sinking into the very deep mattress and sheets. A music box plays Danse Macabre.

The final scene is an endless hallway effect mixed with both the Corridor of Doors and the Mirror Ghost effect. Guests proceed down a hall with a mirror at the end, making it seem endless. Knocks come from behind boarded up doors as The Host says, “Some think the winding hallways and labyrinthine layout were designed to confuse the ghosts and spirits Sarah supposedly thought were haunting her, allowing her to live in peace in her new home. Look, I think Sarah has come to bid you farewell.” Guests look in the mirror and see Sarah's ghost as she appeared in the attic. The ghost says, ”Please hurry back someday, it gets awfully lonely in such a large manor and I am just dying to meet your friends!“

Vehicles then exit through a greenhouse and return to the front door where the Host says, “Although she died in 1922, Sarah Winchester, a woman of independence, drive, and courage, lives on in both Californian history and legend to this day. I hope you enjoyed the tour of the Winchester Mystery House and its mysterious rooms. Farewell, my dear friends and enjoy your day.” Guests unload and wander through the gardens before entering the stables, where guests exit back into Paradise Gardens Park.
The second is putting a Chinatown in San Francisco with Chinese shops and restaurants.

The third is to have something Gold Rush related, given how important the California Gold Rush is in the grand tapestry of US History.

The fourth is to put some sort of tribute to the Indigenous communities of California somewhere. Grizzly Peak is probably the best.

  • It WAS thinking about something for the Winchester Mansion, probably will use!
  • Okay, Maybe some Mulan and Turning Red use-sage?
  • Grizzly Peak National Park will have something Gold related!
  • IDK on that one…
Also, Blizzard Mountain has been cut due to it feeling to similar to the Matterhorn at Disneyland…

As the Sun rises from the ground below, We stand in the entrance for DCA, a park dedicated to the great golden state. As you walk under the Disney’s Californian Dreams Hotel & Spa ( More on it later ), we find ourselves not in Sunshine Plaza, nor Buena Vista Street, instead, we find ourselves in…

Spanish Village

IMG_0349.jpeg

Spanish Village is small, but holds a bit of amenities. The land is set within the 16th ~ 19th Century, though the Sunshine Trolley Car looks like it was made in 1920s California when Walt Disney arrived to make his would-be-blockbuster studio that we all know and love today. The trolley cars take us from the plaza of Spanish Village to areas that we will visit later.

Staying in the plaza, We can find the Spanish Village Town Hall, which holds all of the guest services through our tour, as we continue strutting down the left side of the street, we can find Sunshine Souvenirs, the main retail store of DCA, which sells various Disney & California related merchandise, Walt-Roy-Elias-Lillian-Flora ~ A Tribute To California, A store offering Hats, Shoes, Shirts, etc., with the names above being a reference to Walt Disney’s Family, Barbara’s Fine Sweets, A candy shop with treats galore (And before anyone jokes about it, No, the Unknown is nowhere to be seen), and the wonderful Mission Tortilla Factory, a direct recreation of the former walkthrough with the free tortillas at the end, with a counter-service dining location delivering meals with tortillas in them like quesadillas, tacos, burritos and more.

On the right side, we can find Mickey’s Market, a produce stand offering fresh fruit and vegetables alongside Minnie’s Candelabras, a candle shop selling, well, candles! We can also find Clarabelle’s Hand-Scooped Ice Cream Parlor, a ice cream shop that is like the one we have IRL, and also the San Angelos Bakery, where a delightful acrid smoke smell fills the air in and around the place, alongside various breads for us to enjoy.

The Sunshine Plaza offers as a park for a short walk through the streets of Spanish Village, at the dead-center of the plaza is the Storytellers Statue, which features Walt and Mickey, standing on a suitcase, next to the statue is a plaque marked with the words:
“It was July 1923. I packed all of my worldly goods - a pair of trousers, a checkered coat, a lot of drawing materials and the last of the fairy tale reels we had made - in a kind of frayed cardboard suitcase. And with that wonderful audacity of youth, I went to Hollywood, arriving there with just forty dollars. It was a big day the day I got on that Santa Fe California Limited. I was just free and happy!” - Walt Disney

Behind the Storytellers Statue is a recreation of the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse with a golden sun rising from behind it and reflecting the actually sun, in front of the lovely structure is a fountain that for every coin tossed into, is delivered to Make-A-Wish, and helps children around the world, and it all starts with a act of kindness. In the playhouse itself is a show similar to The American Adventure over at EPCOT Center in Walt Disney World, This is Golden Dreams, A show telling the story and history of California under one roof. The show is something like the show we got in reality where Ariel’s Undersea Adventure stands today, and something that delivers magic and charm of the golden state. And the exit of the show we can find The Golden Historybox, a retail store that offers various clothing, toys, a recreations of the rides we can find at Disneyland and DCA.

If that was a little to similar to @HomeImagineer ‘s Spanish Village, I’m Sorry. I couldn’t think of anything for the entrance, but DO expect the next part of our tour next week!

Alright everyone, heres the first part of Hollywood pictures backlot, I want to focus on major ideas, so a few of my posts and threads will be deleted. I might not continue with this thread, so, if that happens, sorry!

Hollywood Pictures Backlot

IMG_0353.jpeg

As we stand in the center of DCA’s plaza, we find four gateways, as we walk towards the bottom left gate, we find elephants atop of pedestals inspired by the movie Intolerance, as this is the entranceway to Hollywood Pictures Backlot (I kept the old name cuz I like it better than Hollywoodland)!
Firstly, on the immediate right is the
ABC Soap Opera Bistro, themed around various ABC shows, it is companioned with the ABC Soaplink, selling ABC merchandise. On the left, we can find Gone Hollywood, a gift shop selling Hollywood merchandise, and also Award Weiners, a Hot Dog counter service stand.
