There is a plus if DLP ever closes, they can move everything to WDW! We could get the newer AA's, props, sets, and technology! Where ever there's a cloud, there's a silver lining!!!!!

The way to make DLP profitable...

The EU should declare DLP as automomous EU territory, no longer under the juristiction of the French and make English the official languish.

If they do that they will get more visitors from the rest of Europe, especially the U.K.!

It is the most beautiful Magic Kingdom (even the Castle IMHO).
They can keep the studios in France.
All kidding aside I hope everything gets back on track for them soon. We may complain alot about not having enough E-ticket rides. That park really needs some new attractions E-ticket or not.

Spain doesn't deserve Disney after it tucked its tail between its legs after they were bombed. But let's not even get into that.

excuse me?

I said Barcelona... not Madrid. The country of Spain is divided into several different provinces, all with their own cultures, and most with their own languages.

Barcelona, although within the legal jurisdiction of Spain, is Catalonia.

Don't badmouth my motherland.

there is a difference though... this is a democratically elected government from the socialist party. meaning, if things get bad, there's alway next election. No Coup Necessary.

and for those who weren't aware of this, a pretty good interpretation of this is found in a great 2002 film, L'auberge espagnole .

As far as the politics is involved, i don't think the mods here want threads with re to it. I'll only add that this one fell quickly off a cliff, before mkt lent a hand.

As far as DLP is concerned. Definately financial problems. But its similar to all the whining that goes on within these boards about how WDW and DL have gone downhill. They're still two of the top destinations in the US.

France usually beats the US in tourists(not counting single day visitors which would then really pummel the US) by a few million, both in the 40-50 million range each year since the early 90's. DLP receives twice as many visitors as the Eiffel Tower and even the Pompidou Center receives 30% less than DLP.

If DLP wasn't "DLP" and it was DLB or something else, France's #'s wouldn't compare to the US' since it receives around 12 million visitors of those 40-45 million each year.

Its relative centrality in Western Europe is perfect, imo. If it had been located in Barcelona, Zaragoza etc all the Belgian, French, German, etc buses would have much farther to travel, and not just countryside. They wouldn't be doing it as a school trip. A big chunk of that 11 million/year is through these type of visitors.

I really wish something was done with DLP! I don't want it to close!

That would be insane!! A closed Disney park!
From what I've heard the "Need Mag?c" campaign is doing wonders for the resort! The hotels are occupied and there is a slight up in attendance #s!!! :)

Excuse me, but most tourists visit DLRP while in France, and not France while at DLRP.... France already was #1 tourist destination before DLRP even got built. DLRP maybe attracts an additional 1 to 2 million tourists each year but that's all.

BUt I agree that a DLR in Spain wouldn't work... ok the weather is better. But that's all. Disney made extensive studies to prove that France still was the best place to build a Disneyland and they were right. The problem is, they didn't adapt well enough for the fist two years, and since then, they are paying for that and can't grow, and they go cheap. :( But that time seems to be over now, as the new management really wants new attractions. Extensive rehabs are occuring everywhere. So wait for the end of those financial negotiations in may and many announcments following. :sohappy:

From a cultural perspective, i wish you were right, but the reality is that many foreigners visit DLP and very little else in France. Your 1-2 million figure is way off.

Over the past two years, according to the official DLP annual reports, 40% of visitors to DLP were French, 22% Brits, 7% Germans, 6% Benelux, 9% Dutch, 9% Italian/Spanish combined, and finally the other 8% were from all the other countries, mainly from the US and Japan.

So if you take 40% out of the annual visitor #'s of around 12 million, that leaves roughly 7 million foreign visitors to DLP. But if your statement was correct, wouldn't these numbers surely translate to visitors of the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, D'Orsay, Versailles, Pompidou Center? The attendance numbers of these attractions are dwarfed by those of DLP. This is because the majority of foreign visitors to DLP don't bother to visit Le Havre, Nice, Loire, or even the most marketed fixtures of France over the past 100 years.

I'm sure there are going to be some who will respond saying their visits were comprised of mainly Paris attractions and a couple of days to DLP. But this is a US-based site, and US/Canadian/Japanese visitors tend not to waste money on airfare only to visit a theme park so that response goes without saying. Overseas visitors only comprise less than 8% of the visitors to DLP. But the 52% of other foreign visitors is what my point focuses on.

so if Barcelona isn't the place to build, then please explain to me why Port Aventura isn't failing. Tell me then, what the countless German, French, British, and other tourists are doing there....

Furthermore, the same could be said about WDW before it was built. You know what Orlando was then?....

nothing. Orange Groves and a Town Hall. But people still came.... in droves.

At least Barcelona has the good weather, and a decent tourist industry... as well as a legimate city center, and a population that would more than likely be more receptive to a Disney park than the Parisians were in the beginning.

In the end it all came down to money, and the French government just offered the land to Disney for less.

A DL in Barcelona is a big no no! its not the tourist levels or the surroundings (well maybe a little) but the whole atmosphere of a certain place .For example America the country in which disney was brought up ,this was an obvious first choice. Then japan, a very expandable country and the japanese people have been working with disney for quite a while ,then ther was paris the city of 'love' with a rich culture a magical mystery surrounding it.But BARCELONA!!!:veryconfu
