Huge SeaWorld Announcement 8/15

Larger Orca accommodations have been in the works for at least three years according to my knowledge. Just a shame it is shrouded in this Blackfish fiasco.
This should not even require knowledge regarding the project. Three years of design is just about the average for Disney, Universal and SeaWorld for projects of this scope. Universal has been able to accelerate their timelines but that has required increased financing that SeaWorld does not have.

Y'all keep telling yourself that SEA's collapse of attendance, stock and revenue because of criticism of its killer whale exhibits has nothing to do with SEA announcing a vast expansion of its killer whale exhibits.

Sea World 1/4 of the problem of Sea world parks and entertainment and it's not because of the fishes black or otherwise. The current largest ownership group is blackstone of running Uni nearly into the ground fame. Turtle trek= fouled out. Antarctica =They pointed to the outfield when they came to the plate, grounded out to first allowing a triple play that retired the side. Falcon's fury= Manny Ramirez when he went inside the green monster. The boy who lived is also affecting attendance, locals love shiny.

I mean yeah a typical project takes years to plan but I also think it's highly possible to quickly put together a plan, even as big as Blue Ocean Project, after a big backlash like Blackfish. I'm not saying they did, I'm just excited about the expansion, but I'm interested to see if there's proof that it was started before BF.
The Blackfish people will, of course, say it was because of their actions and the SeaWorld people will stand behind their view that it was planned all along.

What difference does it make as long as it's getting done?

Because one side has to be right. It's the way of the world though it shouldn't be.

Sounds like according to what I read this is a lot more than just bigger tanks, it's built around a better guest interaction with the critters. :)

There is no controversy. There are ceteceans in inadequate conditions. Activism against it is paying of, and it does both us and now the whales plenty of good to bring that up. ;)

But was it funded? Was it planned for all parks?

There are always a million expansion plans and blue sky projects.
Sea World is evil! Shut them down!!!!!!

And they can deliver the injured Loggerhead Sea Turtles, Manatee, and oil soaked water foul to your house for medical treatment and rehabilitation.

PETA won't be happy until they bancrupt the company putting thousands of people in the unemployment line from their 11 parks, shuttering the only manatee rehabilitaion facility on the planet, and the largest water foul rehabilitation facility (Co-Sponsored by Dawn Dishwashing Liquid) on the planet.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Mark Simmons, author of "Killing Keiko: The True Story Of Free Willy's Return To The Wild". He was also in "Blackfish". He was pretty unhappy with the biased selective editing that the movies producers used. And the amount of the disinformation in the film was mind boogling. Between he and his wife, they work for Sea World as marine mammal behavioral specialists for over 24 years (they left Sea World 15 years ago). This guy is a scientist whose goal is the care and well being of wild marine mammals and he is of the opinion that the the work that Sea World has done and is doing is the best in the world and vital to the global ecological system. He is a top tier scientist and is stunned at the damage that a small group of ignorant yet media savvy extremist can do to the real conservation industry.

The Blackfish mentality is as bad as the "It's on the internet...it must be true" people.

Here is PETA'S response to the announcement:

"This is a desperate drop-in-the-bucket move to try to turn back the hands of time at a time when people understand the suffering of captive orcas, and it will not save the company. What could save it would be the recognition that it needs not to make larger tanks but to turn the orcas out in seaside sanctuaries so that they can feel and experience the ocean again, hear their families, and one day be reunited with them. A bigger prison is still a prison."

Their goals are pretty obvious. I say give the whales to PETA.

It should be noted that 36 of Sea World's 39 orcas were born in captivity. They would die in the wild.

Even if this were true you cannot deny the impact of this film on people, and then on SW. Every single person whom I know watched it was affected by it. My 21 year old son and my wife were in tears. Publicly Seaworld ignored it, but privately they decided to green light a massive expansion. Those Board of Director meetings must have been interesting.

I think they will probably survive, but it will take them years to recover. And what about the follow-up film that I am sure will inevitably be produced. How will they handle that?

This whole thing is a long way from being over. Blackfish, truth or fiction, has been the catalyst for big changes.

Totally agree!
I'm definitely in the camp that loves a day at SeaWorld, but too many of us sit in 'theme park blog land' reading c**p that many bloggers write just to get a bunch of free passes and other goodies and treats!

Show me a theme park blog that speaks the truth; that it is time for SeaWorld to move on!
Found one decent unbiased blog about this Blue World Project that's all so far this week.

Really? One? How many bloggers are there covering this Orca story?

I'm far from being an activist, but I pride myself on being a realist. (Self proclaimed of course! ;))
I do think that SeaWorld have had a rough time of late, but they do deserve some credit for at least responding, even if it was 'a generation too slowly!'

C'mon Buddy, surely you must realize by now that it was a propaganda film that wasn't telling the whole truth?
I'm not getting into this again, but I can pretty much guarantee you that half the people trashing the film on here and calling anyone who appreciated it a fool, never even saw it in the first place.
Sincerely,
The Fool
