So at 14.99 it will take around ten channels to get me to where I'd be paying more than what I currently pay for cable, Internet and home security. I'm not seeing the value.

The value is that you can get HBO for the lowest price without requiring a subscription to cable or sat. Gives cord cutters a chance to get HBO where they previously could not.
