Fixing Epcot

With DHS and DAK likely to get a lot of love over the next few years, Epcot is moving towards the disjointed mess that is the current Hollywood Studios.

Frozen is coming in a big way to World Showcase and a new Soarin' film (and 3rd theater) is coming to Future World. It's also likely that enhancements and even a replacement to Illuminations is in the works. While those things coupled with seasonal drinking events may keep that park afloat they definitely don't "fix" it. Star Wars and Pixar can fix Hollywood Studios. Animal Kingdom didn't need fixing, it just needed more attractions and Avatar helps with that.

The question is, how do you "fix" Epcot?

I have my own thoughts which I'll share below, but I want to see what others have to say as well.

My plan is to bring back the spirit of what existed in the park before. There may be shades of Project Genesis in my thoughts, but that's only because I'm far from an Imagineer.

Future World - The name goes away. Future World needs to be a true permanent World's Fair, and that doesn't always mean Futuristic. I like Discoveryland as a name much better.
  • Spaceship Earth - The interactivity at the end is perfect fodder for a post show activity... 5 years ago. Re-write the script and get a new narrator. There's nothing wrong with Judy Dench, but typically a new script has been accompanied by a new narrator. Put in a true future of communication finale in the descent and remove the onboard screens. Another option is to utilize the screens in a different way so that they interact with the finale outside the vehicles.
  • Innoventions West - Unfortunately characters aren't going away. The Epcot Character Spot works, but the characters aren't wearing futuristic garb. That should change. I also encourage putting other classic characters in Innoventions West as a series of meet and greets. Like it or not, there's a demand for this.
  • The Seas Pavilion - This is tough. I think the objection to character infusion is when a ride with a character goes where it doesn't belong. There's nothing inherently wrong with the ride here, other than it's out of place. Having said that, the Seacabs would bore today's audience. I don't want to see the characters here, other than perhaps teaching guests about the marine life in Seabase. Both The Little Mermaid Characters and the Nemo characters can be used on education signs, but not in the ride. I'd also like to see Turtle Talk relocated to Pixar Place.
  • The Land Pavilion - I'd like to see the live narrator return to Living with the Land as well as the original song at the end. Scene upgrades could also help. Personally, I think the entrance to Soarin' should come from Showcase Plaza, which potentially opens up that area for another attraction. Circle of Life also needs an upgrade
  • Imagination Pavilion - This is pretty simple. Gut the building, remove the ride track and put in a high capacity version of the LPS ride system. Dreamfinder should return with the "full of wonderment" version of Figment, not the "sugar high know-it-all" version that currently exists. I'd even like to see a full on recreation of the first scene, but allow the vehicles to travel all the way around the Dream Mobile. With 360 projections on the walls, the opening scene could really amaze in the same way the finale of Mystic Manor does. Walls can collapse as guests progress deeper into the ride.
  • Innoventions East - This needs to tie back to Communicore. Many of the current exhibits (Sum of all Thrills, and Stormstruck) do a good job of this, it just needs to be refreshed regularly.
  • Ellen's Energy Adventure - I'd like to hand over this attraction to Neil Degrasse Tyson. The visuals and concepts in The Cosmos are fascinating but may be a bit dry for the theme park audience. The focus should be on Energy and the pairing of a TV scientist with a comedian does work to a certain extent. Bring another comedian, pair them with Tyson and change the ride concept. Id' also suggest repurposing the Dinosaurs over to the Animal Kingdom.
  • Wonders of Life - Yes, people keep saying that the Festival Center is needed for seasonal events. Let's be honest, it's an ugly building. Demo it and use the valuable real estate for something permanent. It's where I want to see the "Century 3" pavilion. This pavilion would include the updated Horizons attraction called Century 3. This should be a slow moving dark ride, like the original, but the guests should have the option to ramp up the intensity during the Imax screens and choose your own ending finale. I believe a similar concept was going to be in place for a Kuka Arm Incredibles attraction at one point. Carousel of Progress should also move into this Pavilion.
  • Mission: SPACE - I'd like to see multiple destinations, but have been told by an Engineer that the pitch and yaw of the individual pods couldn't vary. Having said that, adding various destinations akin to Star Tours would still be a welcome addition.
  • Test Track - I think the queue and set up for Test Track 2.0 screams EPCOT Center to me. What I dislike is the on ride narration and effects. The new ride is good, but it could be better. Tweak the narration and plus the show scenes and the ride will be fine.
World Showcase
  • Showcase Plaza - My desire to have it's a small world move to The Odyssey has been well documented. I think with it's a small world on one side and the entrance to Soarin' Over the World on the other side, Showcase Plaza is an excellent kick off to World Showcase.
  • Norway Pavilion - I hate the idea of a Frozen ride in World Showcase, but have conceded that Princesses aren't going away. Build the large meet and greet area, but bring back an attraction inspired by Norway's history and mythology, not a Disney animated movie.
  • Mexico Pavilion - I'm not going to pretend that El Rio del Tiempo was a great ride, or that I don't really like the song at the end of Gran Fiesta Tour. Having said that, another change needs to happen to this ride. It's a high capacity boat ride that's always a walk on. I'm not sure how to fix it, but it needs to be improved.
  • China Pavilion - I'm not a fan of Reflections of China at all. I don't know what to replace it with, but I doubt I will ever watch it again until it changes.
  • Outpost - Ideally there would be a more permanent feeling Country here, but so much of Africa is represented pretty well over at the Animal Kingdom. The shops here are very cool and could easily find a home in the expanded Harambe.
  • Germany Pavilion - There's room for a ride and there's an old concept for a ride. It certainly wouldn't hurt, but I don't think Epcot needs another boat ride.
  • Italy Pavilion - I'd like to see an attraction here, but not sure where it could go.
  • The American Adventure - I'd like to see a Table Service restaurant here that celebrates foods from around the country.
  • Japan Pavilion - This is where a thrill ride should go, whether it's a bullet train simulator, Mt. Fuji, or something we haven't heard of, this is a great spot for a thrill ride.
  • Morocco Pavilion - Other than the menu at Spice Road Table there isn't much I would change here. Sure, a ride would be nice, but there isn't really an obvious spot to put it unless you remove Restaurant Marrakesh.
  • France Pavilion - For what it is, I enjoy Impressions de France, there isn't much I would change here.
  • United Kingdom Pavilion - I miss the World Showcase players, but other than that I don't see a need for many changes.
  • Canada Pavilion - The complaints about the Lumberjacks have been well documented. I enjoy O' Canada, but definitely like the idea of a water ride here. If that ride could also help hide the Soarin' show building, even better.

Future World

  • Spaceship Earth: Keep the right as it is only do something with the ending
  • Innovention West: I agree
  • The Seas Pavilion: Let characters from the Little Mermaid and Nemo teach you something on the information boards but remove them from the rides. Turtle Talk could be a perfect interactive feature for a Nemo ride at either Animal Kingdom or Hollywood Studios. I think that something like the SeaCabs would be a great ride if it were to create the feeling of going underwater. Another simulator ride where you would board a submarine would show you the dangers and beauties of the sea. Encounter sharks and see what humans are doing which destroys this undersea kingdom. These rides could also be combined as a ride similar to the 20,000 leagues under the sea ride in Tokyo.
  • The Land Pavilion: Living with the Land should get back its' narrator and maybe add a few more scenes to really make clear what they want to show. The way in which we use the land and what it does to it. I think Soarin' over the Globe is a must, but the entrance should stay inside the Land. Maybe the queue could be changed a bit to make the long queues a bit more entertaining. I think the Circle of Life should be replaced by an AA show based on the four seasons. Also special effects as '''falling leaves'', ''snow'' etc. could be included. Another ride based on climates would be a great thing for the Land. It would be a rollercoaster flying over the desert, through a forest and above the mountains.
  • The Imagination Pavilion: I agree with the LPS ride idea. Maybe for the Captain Eo theatre, a ride similar to despicable me minion mayhem could be opened there. It would be about the DreamFinder and Figment exploring several Dreams, but when nightmares take over you will have to escape several fears as spiders, clowns and height. Another great feature would be an indoor rollercoaster similar to rock n rollercoaster where you have to chase the escaped dreams.
  • Innoventions East: I agree
  • Energy Pavilion: I think that Ellen's Energy Adventure should be updated and maybe get some new scenes about several energy ways as Solar, Wind, Water and other types. Also the ride shouldnt take as long as it does now. Maybe the Carousel of Progress could be added here too.
  • The Wonders of Life Pavilion: I think this should return with all new rides. Give us a simulator inside Riley's head where we have to function as the emotions in a way similar to mission space. Maybe give us a flume ride inside the human body and maybe bring back something like cranium command.
  • Space Pavilion: I think that Mission Space should get a randomized system to bring people back. Also make it a real pavilion and give it a restaurant inside an astronomical observatory. A lunar rover dark ride would also be great.
  • Transportation Pavilion: This pavilion now really focuses on the thrills of test track which I think should stay the same. Give an autopia like attraction a location for the non thrill riders and maybe bring a dark ride similar to world of motion back.
  • Other pavilion ideas: I think a Weather Pavilion would be great. Maybe an EMV vehicle could transport you through several weather conditions as rain fall, sunshine, tornadoes and so on. An Armageddon like ride called Storm Encounter would also be great where you experience an earthquake, blizzard, thunder storms and more. Horizons is also something that should make a return. I have never been on the ride but I know that people like it.

World Showcase:
  • I think that in the middle where there is mainly water now, should be changed into It's A Small World. The ride would serve as the castle of World Showcase and could be used for the Nighttime Spectacular. The ride itself would be slightly different to fit the Epcot theme better.
  • Norway: Give us a boat ride similar to Maelstrom but with a journey to Valhalla where we could encounter gods. Anna and Elsa could meet guests in the pavilion, but nothing more. Norway is Norway and Arendelle is Arendelle.
  • Mexico: The three caballeros ride should keep the three caballeros. Maybe make the ride an indoor flume ride where we follow the three feathered friends. The storyline would be that the Aracuan bird steals Jose's guitar and opens a portal into the history of Mexico. Follow audio animatronic Donald, Jose and Panchito on a journey to get back the guitar and be back on time for the concert. An indoor coaster based on Quetzal would also be great, but this would be a second ride and not a single ride.
  • China: I think a madhouse themed to Yama, the god of Death would be great. Maybe an indoor rollercoaster themed to a red dragon, but I think thats more for Animal Kingdom.
  • Germany: Make the rhine river cruise ride with several icons of Germany along the way and another ride inside a library with several Grimm stories coming to life.
  • Italy: I would love to see a venetian gondola ride or spinner and another dark ride where you board a chariot and travel to the Imperium Romanum.
  • Japan: Give us the mount Fuji coaster( do it inside so that it doesnt ruin the calm world showcase atmosphere) and a simulator similar to the lost temple at Movie Park Germany and Hogwarts express where you see several Japanese icons and maybe even Godzilla.
  • Morocco: A 1001 arabian nights ride will do. Either a boat ride or a flying carpet ride.
  • France: A parisian bus tour would be great or maybe a Ratatouille ride, where you and Remy explore the French Kitchen Culture. But when Remy wants to collect his ingredients, Skinner interrupts us. I know characters shouldn't belong to world showcase, but this feels so different than Frozen for me.
  • United Kingdom: Give us a British literature dark ride, a charles dickens aa show and maybe a London tour inside a red bus. Maybe a walkthrough based on Sherlock Holmes could be cool too
  • Canada: I agree
  • Other countries: I have some suggestions for new countries, Greece, Australia, Switzerland, Jamaica, Netherlands, Kenya, Poland, Denmark, Ireland, Brazil, Costa Rica, Sri Lanka, Iceland, Spain, Egypt, Israel, United Arab Emirates, India, Indonesia, New Zealand.
Love your ideas too though.

Here's what I would do to fix Epcot.
  • restore the original EPCOT Center name
Future World:
  • restore the entrance plaza; get rid of Leave a Legacy (but I would put all the Leave a Legacy photos in a special collage in the shape of the EPCOT Center logo (which is the picture below) in front of the flowerbed) and restore flowerbeds and logo structure
Epcot%20logo2%20copy.jpg

  • Spaceship Earth--Get rid of the touch-screens and Judi Dench narration. Add in new James Earl Jones narration with elements of the first three narrations. Add new descent/finale featuring the return of "Tomorrow's Child". Move Project: Tomorrow to Innoventions and restore Earth Station, the park's original Guest Relations.
  • CommuniCore--restore waterways surrounding the hub. Destroy Pin Central hub, the canopy and the stage in front of Fountain of Nations. Restore old exhibits: EPCOT Computer Central, TravelPort, Energy Exchange, EPCOT Poll, EPCOT Outreach, FutureCom and the Robotics Expo. Keep VISION House and move Project: Tomorrow from Spaceship Earth to CommuniCore West. Restore Centorium shop, with two floor structure.
  • Universe of Energy--get rid of Ellen's Energy Adventure, and make new 30-minute show based on the original 1982 production. Energy Exchange gets special entrance nearby the exit to Universe of Energy.
  • Wonders of Weather--turn Wonders of Life into weather-centric pavilion. StormRider (replacing Body Wars) from Tokyo DisneySea serves as headliner attraction here.
  • Horizons--move Mission: SPACE to Future World West and bring this ride back. Make no changes for the new generation. The ride is (was) perfect as is!
  • Test Track--get rid of awning and big "T".
  • Journey Into Imagination--restore pavilion to its original greatness. Bring back original Journey Into Imagination, upstairs ImageWorks and Magic Journeys.
  • The Land--replace Circle of Life with Kitchen Kabaret, give Sunshine Seasons a new menu, similar to that of the Sunshine Seasons Food Fair and give Soarin' a new world-centric film
  • Mission: SPACE--move it in-between The Land and The Living Seas. Add in new post-show featuring various activities centered around space (something like this: http://jimhillmedia.com/editor_in_chief1/b/jim_hill/archive/2005/02/10/542.aspx).
  • The Living Seas--restore to its pre-Nemo state. Keep Turtle Talk but with the backstory that Seabase Alpha is testing out the hydrophone.
World Showcase:
  • Mexico--bring back El Rio del Tiempo; add in botanical gardens and Raging Spirits at the back of the pavilion
  • Norway--keep Frozen as far away as possible; bring back Maelstrom
  • China--no change
  • Russia--Replacing the Outpost, this new pavilion features The Bells of Change, the planned American-Adventure style-show narrated by Leo Tolstoy and a family dark ride based on Stravinsky's "The Firebird".
  • Germany--Rhine River Cruise finally gets built
  • Italy--Italian bakery and geletaria opens; a ruins-based walkthrough opens
  • The American Adventure--no change
  • Japan--Mt. Fuji Bullet Train roller-coaster is added
  • Morocco--Sindbad's Seven Voyage is added
  • France--no change
  • United Kingdom--rotating-theater show featuring some of Britain's greatest works opens
  • Egypt--Replacing the Showcase Pavilion in-between UK and Canada, the pavilion features an outdoor marketplace and a pyramid-based E-ticket
  • Canada--Grizzly River Run is added to shield guests' view of the Soarin' building
  • Tapestry of Nations--the iconic parade returns to delight a new generation!
What do you think?

I'm all for reopening the 2nd story of Imagination, maybe as another restaurant (future world could actually use more and would potentially offer an amazing view of illuminations) I would also consider a retheme to "air" (so then you have land, sea, and air) and then wonders of life becomes creativity or imagination and that whole side becomes about harnessing power (energy, creative power, power of flight, power of cars). Love the idea of randomizing mission space, if the context of what your seeing changes enough, the same movements wouldn't be as noticeable...not sure on innoventions other than opening up windows and letting some more light shine in!! World Showcase: new countries and maybe 3 new rides, something to absorbe some crowds....

Would Soarin' then go to air? And what could be other things there. A windmill spinner? A rollercoaster based on harsh winds?

My visual complaints with the park is Leave a Legacy, the tarp in the center, some parts of the paint job, Odyssey, the Nemo character planter and statues, and the Test Track tarp. Otherwise if everything else there was "polished" it'd be fine visually.

Well, technically, the Oddysey has been there since Day One. Would it help if the Oddysey was once again a full-fledged restaurant?

I think the Oddysey should be replaced by a new world showcase country. Its barely used, it is a bit out of place and world showcase needs new countries.

Future world just has to give a livier feeling than all the straight buildings around spaceship earth

So I had my iPhone on shuffle on my way home tonight and the original "One Little Spark" came on. I've had this thought before, but I'll say it again. If you listen to the interaction between Dreamfinder and Figment there is one key piece of dialog that's missing from the current attraction that changes everything. Figment needs Dreamfinder to be lovable because it's Dreamfinder that, "Throws in a dash of childish delight." Figment doesn't have that in the latest version of the attraction. The version that exists now is Figment saying, "Dreamfinder, I'm just right." He's that defiant, know it all that has yet to be reigned in by Dreamfinder.

It's no secret that Dreamfinder, or a similar character need to be brought back. Figment can't be the educator in that attraction, he needs to be the student.

Wow...very deep. I agree with you. That's why in my plans, I brought back the original Journey. Besides, we all know the new version's there because Eisner wanted to turn the ride into a Honey, I Shrunk the Audience spin-off.

How about bring back the original Journey, but in a special way? Add trackless cars used in Pooh's Hunny Hunt and Mystic Manor, add lots of cool effects to update it a bit, give Dreamfinder the beard from the comics, etc.
