It seems as if this whole Disney-vs.-Universal thing, where one is trying to gain more crowds than the other, is becoming less like competition and more like war. Granted, they are competitors, but why does it seem like they are not just in competition with each other, but also almost at war with each other?

That's what competition is.

Without Disney nearby Universal would be nothing.

I don't see much 'war' happening since Universal is continually expanding whereas Disney aren't really doing anything but continue to raise prices, therefore deterring people to Universal.

Capitalism. Free enterprise. How it works. And it's working well here in Orlando! Yay!

Uni has kind of pulled so far ahead as far as quality that it isn't much of a war, lol. Disney's fighting style is more like those Gulf War soldiers who surrendered to the news cameramen than like the Japanese in WWII. :)

I hope Uni "wins". The more people who go there might mean less crowds for us at WDW.
I would love to go to Universal I am just committed to Disney with DVC and AP. For many years we had passes for both WDW and US and when APs at WDW went up we had to pick one.
Plus when I am at Disney I cant stand to leave the bubble! :)

I'm a huge fan of both Disney and Universal, specifically USH. I would be absolutely devastated if anything happened to either. There are some days where I feel like going to Disney rather than Universal, and vice versa.

I wouldn't call it a war. After all, Universal lets Disney use their backlot all the time. Just typical competition and there's nothing wrong with that.

I think it also tends to vary with different types of people an different kinds of rides. universal tends to win hands down on coaster aspects but not everyone is into that.
also in universal ride restrictions are much more problematic. to be honest isn't know of one Disney world ride I had a problem with (maybe on barnstormer with leg room) but in comparison for example with Harry potter there is no reducto spell known in the world to get my fat butt to fit on that thing. so for me I get taken way out of the theming when I have to study the ride and know about it well in advance to go on it. in that same view it also means I by my nature don't get excited about rides ahead of time because I don't want to be let down which is a possibility on their attractions. (universal studios tends to be more forgiving than islands of adventure on a side note to interesed tubbies out there)

I think younger children probably would get the vote towards Disney by a fair mark, and if nothing else it's due to simply having more rides geared to them and for them. Disney also keeps current with films an shows for younger kids while, at least as I saw it, universal doesn't have all the same amount of shows, though admittedly most families love the dreamworks films an the Lorax.
( that btw is one reason I enjoyed the placement of rock n roller coaster and tower of terror in that they were sort of out of the way from the rest of the park and more "grown up" oriented than other attractions there. kind of being off in its own wing you can sort of pass it without kids feeling left out when they couldn't go on it or parets didn't think it would be suitable for their kids)

so perhaps it is a war for the same almighty dollar but in that war they recruit very different types where disney is trying to get marines and universal is calling in the air force.

also watch out for seaworld, they recruit ninjas and it's a really fun park experience too....

end of the day they both make out like bandits

older but interesting article, it actually appears both parks intentionally are gouging us do we appear to get better deals for longer visits.

Disney still offers more to me, so even if they add nothing, I don't see why universal is any better. Disney has a bunch of things and charges a lot, but aren't expanding quickly on a large enough scale order people this year. universal is expanding faster but we pay comprable prices and don't have as many things at universal so depending on views one could say universal is worse making us pay more per feature and attraction.
