At least the wages are all higher than minimum wage. The federal minimum wage law is now set at $5.15. So $6.80 is pretty good for most of those jobs. As far as I know, Florida does not have separate state minimum wage law so they probably follow the Federal law, however, apparently minimum wage is supposed to be around $6.15 for FL. Even so, $6.80 an hour is a bit higher.

While in a perfect world all the CM's would get paid a lot more since more is expected of them than any other employee at some fast food restaurant for instance, most of the jobs are minimum wage-style jobs and the pay is probably more or less appropriate.

The pay for Disney transport services is pretty good though. At $9.15 an hour, some of them shouldn't be so grumpy ;) (This is an anomaly, most of the bus drivers, boat captains, monorail drivers are always very friendly. But every trip I always get the guy or gal who seems to hate his/her job and isn't afraid to show it)

Money talk aside, I must give a heartfelt thank you to all CM's who work so hard to make a trip to Disney so special for so many people.

Characters $6.95 ??

Oh I'd want more to be kicked in the XXXXX and wear a sweaty costume all day.
yeah, i was surprised by that too. It's why I asked my union question... Because from what I remember, transport people are all unionized so their higher wages make sense.

Wouldn't the actors guild get involved with the characters? You must need some kind of specialized acting training to be a proper character. Does anyone know if the face characters make more?

^^Yea, I'm surprised the pay for characters is the same as say a ticket seller or food and beverage. I've never been a character, but my brother's friend was and from what I can remember talking with him (it was a relatively LONG time ago) they are only out for a short period of time (15 minutes?) and then are given an equally long break to cool off, relax, etc. Is that true? If it is, maybe the pay is lower than one would think since they are only truly "working" for half an hour every hour. I honestly don't know though, but I'm sure somebody here can help me out.

Character training can be done very quickly. Every "suit" in TWDC has to go through a shift as a character, and get very minimal training.

Sorry, no. One of the constitutional amendments on the 2004 ballot was to increase the state's minimum wage to $6.15, and index it to inflation for annual increases thereafter. It passed in each of Florida's 67 counties, with the "closest" margin being 60% for/40% against.

The enabling legislation, and thus the higher wage, took effect May 1st.

Do most CM's have a 2nd job? I know the cost of living in FL is cheaper than up here in Boston, but that doesn't seem enough to live on... even though I'm sure there's CM's that work there because they want to and the $ isn't an issue.

Go CM's!! You all rock for making WDW what it is. :)

Really??? That's hilarious! Which villain do the lawyers get to be?? (or do they hang out in a shark suit as Bruce from Finding Nemo?)

Topic? Does TWDC offer any kind of benefits package to compensate for the crummy wages?

Thanks. When I searched google, I found that the basic miniumum wage for FL was $6.15, but that the date that it would become effective was not determined and so FL was still listed as not having a separate state law. I wasn't aware that it actually took effect earlier this month. Still though, at least $6.80 is above FL's minimum wage and well above most of the country.

thats too bad, it just goes to show you what dedication everyone has! CM's rock...do they get lots of discounts on stuff at the parks? not like it makes a difference, it would just be fun to know.

If it's anything like service-sector jobs in the rest of Florida, benefits are limited to not billing one's estate for tossing one's body in the garbage skip should one die while on the job.

*snort* God, that would be freakin' hilarious if it wasn't true...

If however, some of the posts are unionized, then there may be some kind of a benefits package available to CMs.

You'd think that their chronic labour shortage would actually make TWDC think "hmmm, perhaps we need to do something to attract more quality employees". But that would mean spending more money, and consequently jacking up prices even more ('cause they would never think that this would be an expense that would be able to go towards establishing a more reasonable operating cost... noooo siree!)

I don't know the current status, but when by brother was a CM he got free admission to the theme parks and discount on nearly all merchandise that I think was usually around 20 or 25% off. CM's also got the opportunity to shop at Property Control for some really good deals. He got me a huge Donald plush for around $5.00 simply because it had a small black spot on the back of its foot that easily washed off and a few snowglobes for my mom really cheap. One whose only problem seemed to be because the battery needed to be replaced and another because the top of the globe had a small bubble. For some, the free theme park admission, discounts on merchandise, and the stuff available from Property Control would be reason enough to be a CM, plus of course being paid. For others, they probably could care less about those "benefits" and Disney is just a place to work and make some money for school or rent.

Yikes, I can't believe all the stuff about characters on here that's not true!

Okay, Fur Characters make $6.95 an hour...BUT that's for part time. If you're Full Time, you make more. Yes, face characters do make more. As of right now Disney needs people in the Entertainment (We don't call it the Characters Dept., it's entertainment) department between the heights of 5'0-5'2 and 6'0-6'2. All heights are always considered, but special consideration will be given to people with those height ranges.

You have to audition and be able to dance and animate. You don't have to be a perfect dancer, and they tell you at the beginning of the audition that they are looking for animators, not dancers.

As for benefits, Full Time people get benefits like Health Care, Paid Vacation etc. Part Time just recently started getting health care.

For some of those roles that are stated in the post, the wages aren't completely correct. For example, there are 2 separate pay ranges for lifeguards who work at the resorts and for those who work at the water parks. Full Time will make more than Part Time.

At my Orientation ("Traditions") a Union Rep comes around and tells you about the Union and gives you an opportunity to sign up, no matter what role you are in.

Also, Thelazer, it's called fur characters not "Characters who do not talk"...also, "Equity" characters are ones like the Streetmospheres at MGM, Cinderella in Cinderellabration and some people in Festival of the Lion King. They are equity because they went to a separate audition and make a different amount of pay.

Last but not least, thanks to those who said thanks on here to us CM's. We really appreciate the Thank You's, there are a lot of CM's on here so it's nice to know we are appreciated! Hehe :)
