According to a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything forum someone asked him about the Haunted Mansion Movie...

From Coming Soon
[T]wo weeks ago, I went back to Disneyland with the executives with whom I am developing the screenplay," says del Toro. "It's a hard screenplay to crack. We've done it a few times. We are on our third or fourth draft, with 2 different writing teams, and I think the main thing is to try to combine everything that is great about the ride into the movie, and to make it a really intense but with a sense of fun - just like the ride."

So it appears that it's still going through some work but, at least he's still continuing wanting to make this movie....

I always thought a proper Haunted Mansion movie should be like Peter Jackson's The Frighteners.

Perfect mixture of macabre and fun.

Given Del Toro's track record (Hellboy!), I think the HM IP is in good hands. :D

The Frighteners was an Awesome movie. Early Peter Jackson but so much fun and the special effects were superb (for the time).

I am willing to wait a few years if they are going to make an excellent product. The fact they are doing rewrites and not just pushing for a quick poorly written script, with bad jokes featuring a certain comedian.

I liked the Murphy movie.

It's not bad but, the problem was Murphy's acting...He was being too kid friendly...I mean he got away with a few good lines in Mulan and Shrek but, for some reason it was only thing that was problematic for me...Also Don Knotts was to be the Caretaker in the film but, he cancelled and so the storyline had to be changed...

The Murphy movie was "OK". Nice visuals and such. Some parts were pretty bad but it was cool seeing the effects. The storyline was decent. Not the whole real estate thing but Ramsley killing Master Gracey's love...

They just went the cornball route with it.

With Don being the caretaker it would have been even less creepy. General Zod was wonderful as Ramsley.

Guillermo Del Toro can take all the time he needs..

I want this movie to be extraordinary. Eddie Murphy's film was absolute garbage! I still can't believe Disney even released it. What a disgrace to the attraction!

It must be a trend....Even tho this one came first...

That pretty much describes it. Although, I think they forgot to mention that it's also painful to watch.

So many quotes from that movie are cringeworthy.... Ugh! It's just terrible!

Like I said the effects were cool to see. The house, the inside, the graveyard. The storyline even had potential to be good but they made it WAY too corny, just straight cornball stuff all around. Leota was horrible. They did everything but portray her properly.

Meh... I just thought the movie was all-around bad, but to each his own, I suppose.

I mean it was for sure. I am just saying that they took the writing and the story line the wrong way.

The storyline of Ramsley killing Elizabeth could have been much better had they not wanted 4 year olds and nobody else to love this movie. I am on board with your feelings. I just feel everything was in place for a good movie and they just F'd it up.

Like Star Wars 1-2-3. Everything was set for an amazing 3 movies and they just screwed it up.

I really hope del Toro will remember that part of the Mansion's charm is not only its creepiness but its air of Victorian sensibility...it's shabby but stately, and many of its denizens may be scary but they're also genteel. The Mansion(s) were beautiful homes once. That's what makes them so melancholy - they've fallen from grace, and there's something kind of sad about that.

And I'd love it if the Hatbox Ghost wasn't evil - just mischievous - and turns out to be a friend to whoever the protagonist is in the movie. Sort of a cross between a debonair Vincent Price, and Beetlejuice.
