Can anyone actually finish a pork shank?

After passing up Gaston's Tavern last year, I was all excited to try one of these things on my recent trip but found that I got sick of the thing about 1/4 of the way in. There's a bit of pepper on the outer layer of fat, but for the most part there's no flavor to the thing besides the basic roast pork taste. Plus it has the whole soaked-in-brine flavor familiar to anyone who has had a Disney turkey leg. It would be worlds better if they were smoking them.

Anyone else feel the same way, or is everyone but me disgusted by the very concept of eating one of these?
It would be a lot more fun to eat if they offered something in the way of condiments for it, maybe little containers of Dijon or honey mustard, or at least pepper.

I thoroughly enjoyed mine. I did feel that it was a little light on the flavor, but I have kind of come to expect that as stuff like this is typically done to the lowest common denominator. The meat was fall of the bone tender and there was no more fat than you would normally have on a pork shank. IMHO it is vastly superior to the turkey leg.

I am TOTALLY going to town on one of these when we arrive in two days! Will try to remember to report after we arrive back home but to be honest any cut of pork or lamb stands little chance against me!!!

I only wish you could get it with a side of applesauce.

Great minds think alike.
Applesauce makes all pork better. So does maple syrup, actually.

Well, godspeed to you.
You may want to consider going by another counter service joint and picking up some extra pepper first, though.

I tried one last March. I got through most of it but it was so much, I couldn't finish it. Same holds true for a turkey leg.

I actually prefer the pork shank over the turkey leg. The seasoning on the pork shank is much better in my opinion. Two bites of a turkey leg and you're all greasy. YUCK.

The only way I eat pork is when in Italian restaurants..I love the way the cook it in various ways..As far as the shank goes..I class it in the " Messy Meal Menu "....Like a pulled pork hot dog with chilli sauce..All over your face..:hungry:....I might try one..just might..:inlove:

I have never tried the Turkey Leg, all the tendons and the artificial red color from being "smoked" has never appealed to me.
I LOVE the pork shanks though. It truly is just a roasted piece of meat - and I don't think I tasted any of the "brine" you speak of.
I've had about 5 of them over the past year and I always finish it!
