Around the Resorts in 30 Days

One Little Spark...
Challenge 7 - Trashin' the Camp - @englanddg

Welcome to Hong Kong Disneyland! You have the Jungle Cruise circling around their "Tom Sawyer's Island". Then you have an entire Island themed to Tarzan. Well, not the entire island, Just the treehouse. This surrounding the Jungle Cruise has some serious potential. This can go way more then just Tarzan. What exactly you say?

Well, that's for you to decide.

I'm giving you an island. An entire island, around the Jungle Cruise. To do what you'd like to it. Theme it well, theme it different, just make sure it makes sense with the Jungle Cruise. Remember, a ton of this island does include the Jungle Cruise.

Mowgli's Isle

The Islands in Disney's Castle Parks have had an issue for many years...people don't see them as "must do's". Designed as "parks" to both distribute crowds, but also to provide a unique immersive experience that is "at your own pace" instead of the rest of the parks Wait and Ride styles, the challenges of getting to the islands (waiting for separate transit) as well as having a unique and attractive thing to do there.

I propose we get around this in Hong Kong Disney by integrating the ride with the Island itself, drawing the two concepts together and making for an even more unique Jungle Cruise.

So, the Jungle Book. Ruyard Kipling's "Jungle Book" is not only a literature classic, but has inspired multiple Disney films.

thejunglebookmovie-5052.jpg

Lets start by looking at the whole history (according to Disney canon) of Mowgli.

The animated movie starts something like this:

"On one peaceful day in the jungle, Bagheera the panther hears the cries of something unfamiliar to him and the jungle inhabitants. He goes to investigate and finds an abandon canoe. Inside, he finds a basket with a human child, a "man cub." Knowing the man cub would die alone, Bagheera takes him to a wolf pack.

As the years past, the man cub was named Mowgli, gained the ability to speak with animals, and has become great friends with Bagheera. One night, the wolf pack learned that the notorious predator, Shere Khan, has returned to that part of the jungle, in an attempt to murder Mowgli."

But, there is some back story that the original animated movie didn't get into, but a later movie (Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book) did.

the-jungle-book-dvd-free-shipping-jason-scott-lee-new-fad3.jpg

"He is the son of an Indian Jungle guide named Nathoo who was guiding a group of soldiers led by Colonel Brydon. He and his daughter Katherine (nicknamed "Kitty") are very close friends and show deep affection for each other. She gives him a special bracelet that had belonged to her mother."

"After his father is killed by Shere Khan, Mowgli and his pet cub were lost in the jungle and presumed dead."

(Source: http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Mowgli)

Son of a Jungle Guide? Lost in the Jungle? Sounds like an adventure!

Mowgli's Isle would become part of the Jungle Cruise itself. Story elements of the Jungle Book would be integrated into the ride, and parts of Mowgli's story incorporated into the script for the river boat captains.

I should clarify, with the exception of a slight modification of the script, I do not propose that the Jungle Cruise be turned into a full integrated adaptation of the Jungle Book (a la "Living Seas with Nemo". Rather, the idea is to explain enough of the basic story of a missing child of a "fellow" tour guide on the Jungle Cruise ride that guests are interested in searching for him!

Halfway through the ride, the boat will dock on the island, and guests will be offered the option to debark and "search" for the missing child in a journey through the jungle.

So, as a result a certain percentage of the boat will debark, and the boat will fill up with people leaving their island experience.

Jungle%20cruise.JPG

The island itself will not contain rides, but rather will be a series of walk through attractions. Since these are not "rides", several small refreshment stands will be added to the island (more on that later). Each section will be musically themed, so as you enter it it has it's own "soundtrack".

The Island would be reworked into four distinct areas.

1) Monkey Ruins
2) Elephant Savannah
3) The Wolves Den
4) Baloo's

Guests will walk through a thick jungle and down a path. As they turn a corner at the end of the path they'll turn a corner and in front of them will be a large savanna. Here, they'll have the option to walk through the savanna and spot animetronic animals, and they may even stumble upon these guys!

Or even these baddies is the forested areas!

As they continue their search for Mowgli, and exit the savanna, they can go right and into the ruins of an ancient temple. Here they will be treated to a show!

Monkey Ruins

Animetronic monkeys and King Louie will be performing, telling jokes, and playing gags on guests. The King Louie animetronic will utilize technology similar to Turtle Talk with Crush to allow a hidden cast member to interact with the guests (telling corny jokes and setting up the monkey pranks) between automated song shows.

As the exit the ruins, they can go straight ahead (past the savanna) and see a series of caves which they can explore.

Wolf Caves

These are the caves of Mowgli's wolf parents and brother. While dark and potentially scary, they will come across a natural gem cave...

1894782460.jpg

...underground streams and lake...

Lechuguilla_Cave_Pearlsian_Gulf.jpg

In certain places, lighting elements will be used to make it seem that shadows of Mowgli's family and brother are skirting through the caves. And, if guests keep a sharp eye, they'll see their first clue about Mowgli, as they see his shadow as well.

As they exit the caves, guests will see a part of the island that has previously been hidden from view, a large tree. They begin to hear music...

That's right, they've found...

Baloo's Place!

This is a walkthrough of scenes from the song. If you walk through at the right pace, the scenes will even line up to the animated movie, with animetronics of Baloo singing to Mowgli, and explaining the ways of life!

Directional audio techniques will be used so that the lyrics of the song play only in front of the animetronic you are viewing. The area, however, will have an underlying soundtrack without the lyrics playing so the song envelopes the entire area.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59h4bS4O-Rs

At this point, guests can stop and pick up a Man's Red Fire Slushee or a Prickly Pear ice cream from "Island Snacks" to munch on as they head back to the boat dock, where they will finish their "Jungle Cruise"

In summary, the core to the concept involves a more immersive and themed experience to the Jungle Cruise, encouraging Guests (by integrating with the ride and using the ride vehicles also as transportation to the island) to explore the Island in more detail.

For my concept for Challenge 7, I wanted to emphasize the adventure in Adventureland, created a new vivid environment, full of thrills and excitement. The result? Prepare to embark to Uzuri Peak!

Backstory

Explorers around the globe have heard stories that in the deep depths of the African jungle, lies Uzuri Peak, a lush tropical mountain so captivating that everyone wants a piece of it. But the spirits who watch over the Peak aren't so happy about them wanting to take over their land. agree with them.

So what's the attractions and entertainment?

Guests here at the Peak will encounter explorers from all around the world, exploring the wonders of the island. These adventurers are so happy that you're so interested in their voyage, that they ask that you and your fellow guests come with them, as they enter the mountain and discover its' secrets! Once you enter the mysterious coves, you see caressing waterfalls, amazing rock work by the natives and beautiful flora. But as you enter further and further, you see signs all around you - Turn Back! Escape While You Still Can! - you try to heed their warnings, but it's too late. Thixo, the sun god who watches over this land, is angry at your presence, but opposed to killing you right there and then. He gives you Thixo's Challenge: find the four quarters on to his Sun Stone, who pesky villagers have scattered over the years. If you succeed, you get to go, but if lose, well, your odds don't look so good. Guests will find themselves using their wits to conquer the challenges and mazes the challenge entails. After proper theming, the challenges would be along the lines of the puzzles found in 5Wits, a group of walkthrough attractions near Boston, MA. Check out the trailers here: Number 1 and Number 2.

***

If guests like what they encountered here, they'll definitely want to ride our next ride: Ground of Adroa! This ride uses an adapted version of the ETF Ride System, which has seen uses in Team Magic's "Mickey's Circus Spectacular!" during the Sorcerer's Apprentice, Season 1. Specifically, this version has the ability to attach on to track along with being able to move tracklessly.

Following the paths of other explorers on Uzuri Peak, you venture into the mountain to explore its' beauty. You bump in to other groups, and the majestic surroundings of the mountain. But, you soon return what looks like a temple honoring someone, and crashed vehicles and debris are scattered around the area, showing this is no places for fun and games. This is confirmed as we reach the end of the temple, and fog begins to fill the air. Adroa, god of the living and the dead, rises from the ground, and is outraged that you would disturb her at her dwelling. She banishes you from ever returning, and this is when the excitement begins. Fire and other pyrotechnics shot out at you, and you fly back the way you came - backwards! After dips, and turns left and right, we hear the goddess' crackling laughter as you plummet (forward now) down out of the mountain, finally away from the madness of her lair.

( Editor's Note: If anybody feels that my concepts above were too similar or veers too close to their ideas, please tell me! Sorry if that's the case. )

In the nighttime, Uzuri Peak takes on a whole new form, as the stars shine below. The people of the Peak come together every night to present Maadhimisho Ya Roho or the Celebration of the Spirits. An traditional African band, full of drummers and other musicians playing instruments like lutes and balafons, provides the score of the night, as dancers, choirs, and even fire breathers and jugglers creates a great show that will wow guests of all ages.

The flora, waterfalls, and other physical features surrounding the land take on new life as guests can now interact with them and them interacting back. As the night begins, with a single touch, plants will react to guests' touch, creating drawings of vine, or curling around their finger. Springs appear, and jump around like the fountains in EPCOT, some even spraying guests. Possibly more entertaining to the little ones, this is still a wonder that can only be found at Uzuri Peak.

***

There you have it! Sorry I submitted late, but next challenge, that problem will not occur. Incredible submissions everyone! :D

Attention Competitors, due to recent events, Challenge 7 Critiques and Scores will come late tonight.

That mean's no one gets an advantage for Challenge 8.
But, I've found a way to make it up.

The contestant who accumulates the most points from Challenge 7 and 8 will receive 8 points, and that doesn't count the points won regularly for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

We'll just be counting points from 7 and 8. Nothing from Previous Challenges for this advantage.

Due at Midnight.

The Solution
Disney's Boardwalk is based on the classic boardwalks such as Coney Island and the ones in New Jersey. Everyone knows those boardwalks have big rides such as wooden coasters and Ferris wheels. However, I didn't really want to obstruct the view across the lagoon by placing those rides right there in front.

So, I came up with a compromise.

Boardwalk map.JPG

There is one coaster, Twister, but it only extends across only half of the lagoon. That way there are still great
sight lines.

TWISTER
This is a replica of an old wooden coaster, based on Cyclone at Coney Island.

ci_cyclone.jpg

No, it's not a fake wooden coaster like California Screamin' over at DCA. This is the real, bone-jarring, head-clattering deal. Completely authentic! Pay per ride.

VAUDEVILLE THEATER
Perhaps the most fun addition to the Boardwalk, the Vaudeville Theater is a tribute to the entertainment of the past! Coney Island opened in 1886, right when vaudeville was just beginning to get popular. This theater features several unrelated acts, in true vaudeville style. Including comedians, monologists, ventriloquists, acrobats, jugglers, singers, musicians, dancers, magicians, and even a singing duck! See video below. Pay per show.

CAROUSEL
Not your average carousel. This one is a double-decker! Based on the carousel at Pier 39 in San Francisco. Pay per ride.

large.jpg

THE POPCORN BUCKET
Besides regular popcorn, this stand for adventurous eaters will be a must try every trip! Flavors include caramel, cheese jalapeño, buffalo wings, bacon cheddar, nacho cheddar, candy cane, cranberry orange, cinnamon toast, and more!

Picture001.jpg

FOUNTAIN SHOW
There will be large arrays of fountains positioned near the shore on the boardwalk side of the lagoon. Every night, these fountains will erupt continuously from dusk until dawn, in unbelievably beautiful patterns. The fountains will be synchronized to music, kind of like the Bellagio in Vegas.

The biggest thrill will be leaving the Boardwalk via boat, and going down the narrow alley right between the two sections of fountains.

Welcome to the new boardwalk! Here, not much is changing, but a lot is being added. Notice the area to the upper left of ESPN Zone, that is going to be the major area of expansion, called The Carnival (so original, I know)

The carnival will take up the main area behind ESPN and also tear down the Zone. There will be 3 attractions in this area, with the first being The Flash. The Flash is a classic wooden roller coaster. Then you have a Carousel, and then a drop ride titled Drop of Doom. For these attractions, they will require tickets that you buy from a stand. 20 tickets are $10. Each ride is 4 tickets each.

In addition to that, we have some redone restaurants, like Jellyrolls turning into a family pizza parlor. Also, there will be things like kayaks, paddle boards, and such on the water.

After all of these changes, the Boardwalk will be a must do for all families on their trip to Disney World.

The Epcot boardwalk is a beautiful resort area that allows guest the chance to stay on the water, on a board walk stylized from early America beaches. While this is an amazing opportunity for guest its missing something key. Every form of entertainment on the Epcot board walk are really aimed for adult and tend to be more adult oriented then family oriented. Even the Disney website shows this.
ScreenShot2013-11-09at72508PM_zps6d748216.png

The website even shows options for fun but families are limited to this activities in the Epcot boardwalk resort area.

ScreenShot2013-11-09at72551PM_zps3af0ae26.png

They need something more.

Voxel proudly introduces The Boardwalk 2.0

This new plan for the Boardwalk will be done in three parts:

Part 1:

ScreenShot2013-11-09at64054PM_zps89289e8c.png

In this section of the Boardwalk 3 additions will be made.

A) There will be two new additions to the boardwalk that will come out and be used as stages for family entertainment. Daily and nightly bands and live groups will come out and preform. The day time will have show like Steam Powered Giraffe bringing laughs and fun to every member of the family, making memories of the life time.
Steam Powered Intro Humor

Steam Powered Giraffe Show

Another family oriented entertainment will be swing show for families to attend and dance out next to the water side.

During the holidays, other holiday entertainment will take place on these “stages”.

B) To add to the boardwalk effect the Disney Corporation will be adding a replica of Mickey Fun Wheel that will give guest a different view of the park and a peaceful water side retreat. This will be a one of a kind resort experience that will have guest flocking to the Boardwalk resorts to stay and to visit.
flat,550x550,075,f.jpg

Part 2:
ScreenShot2013-11-09at64950PM_zps941d2fdf.png

C) Not much will be done here except to add the Pirate cove which will blend in with the pirate ship behind it. This section will be used once again for daytime and nighttime shows on the beach. At night beach parties and concerts will occur here giving guest a chance to to experience nighttime beach entertainment without having to go to the beach. It will add to the entire over all experience of the Disney beach resorts.

Part 3:
ScreenShot2013-11-09at65146PM_zps629f431f.png

D) Many of the deluxe resorts have a outdoor nighttime show that guest can watch from the comfort of their room or out near the shore. A great example of this would be the Electrical Water Pageant that is visible by the Deluxe Resorts on the main loop.
poly_beach_ewp_small.jpg

For the Beach resort around 500 water fountains will be placed in the locations provides on the map. Every night, twice a night a World of Color style show will take place that will be visible from the beach and from the boardwalk itself. This will the show stopper that will have guest watching out their window in excitement as water dances in the sky.

@Voxel - At first, I was kind of dissappointed that you only did one ride with the entire space. But this ride would be amazing!

I don't know what else to say.. It just sounds fun! I like how you integrated it with Jungle Cruise. It really makes it feel like an Expedition area.

The audio-anametroic bird sounds great! I'm worried about people in the back seeing it in the front of the vehicle though.

The Trashin' The Camp and the finale scene sounds great! It really makes this ride come together.

Overall, I love it. It just goes well with the area and boosts the theme.

@jdmdisney99 - The Adventure Isle idea is Interesting. It's not really a certain known area or movie to base it off of, it's more like an Adventureland Mini-land.

Enchanted Cove worries me. As a past child freaked out by Uh Oa in Under New Management, Kanaloa may freak some kids out as well.

But, since it isn't there, kudos for brining it to Hong Kong.

I like the idea of Temple of the Lost Souls. It left me wanting a bit more of that to the story in that area!

Overall, The mini-land idea is interesting, but I'm worried about Enchanted cove.

@Zweiland - I can't believe how you handled the sabotage! An Adventureland nighttime show? Brilliant!

Back to the island, Treasure Island was a great choice. The way you added pirates was interesting. Even getting to the attraction was adventurous with the bridge!

I liked how you added Hispaniola. It kind of reminded me of a more advanced walkthrough of a docked Sailing Ship Columbia. It's a nice little filler for a walkthrough since it looks like you got rid of Tarzan.

I like the extra details with the Caves and Spyglass Hill. Really adds to the Island. Mizzenmast Hill really ties it together in one big story. And the Stockade is an interesting dining option.

@danjen2331 - I like your additions to this area! The Jungle Cruise re-theme seems amazing. The new architecture, moving some scenes. A Pirate theming with the Jungle Cruise adds something new to China, but still classic.

The ship, the caves, the bridge really ties it to be a mini-land. Something that guests can really explore.

Overall, Great job on this!

@ctxak98 - I love what route you took on this. It's not really been done with Adventureland before, very interesting concept!

It seemed like.. Tom Sawyers Island, with Audio-animetronics to give it's theming more depth.

Overall, I really enjoyed this creative idea!

@Matt7187 - Interesting idea for this area. I like the mysterious part of this attraction, it'll work with Adventureland well.

I wish you incorporated the Jungle Cruise more with this, since it surrounds it. I don't know how I feel about using another exploration boat ride in the area though. It seems like the Jungle Cruise is surrounding another expedition, plus getting to it by raft.

Overall, interesting idea, but I wish you made it work with the area more in theming.

@englanddg - Jungle Cruise plus the Jungle Book? Sounds like a win, win situation to me!

The idea of making a it an area where you can explore different scenes from the movie is cool!

Overall, I really enjoyed this idea, Great job!

@MA Screamin' - Uzuri Peak really brings things together in that area!

I like the exploration and adventure it brings. The Ride system and the story itself sound fantastic! I also enjoyed how you made it different at night as well. The interactive pant life was also a plus.

Overall, Great Job!

I tried to channel my Inner early imagineer where many of the rides were the grandiose adventures into the film or childhood stories. (Even now size of many attractions are smaller then some of the originals). I was trying to return to that. I thought I mentioned that the seats had an elevation difference for seeing, I was originally gonna do 3/4 people to a car but didn't wanna worry about splitting up bigger families. CM would be trained to have kids in front and parents in back when ever possible to allow maximum viewing.

It reminded me of a Disney version of the teridactyle ride at IoA.

Which, of all the rides there, I think it is one of the best, of not the best.
