A Swashbuckling Adventure
Welcome to the newest attraction in Adventureland, The Tale of Captain Kidd.

Facade/Queue: You will enter a dark, mysterious cavern with torches lit alongside the walls, and ancient drawings/words carved into them.

Show Experience: You enter a circular room with a live narrator in the middle of the room. Once everyone is situated, the narrator starts to begin the story. But when the narrator pulls out a cursed dabloon of Captain Kidd's, you hear from the ceiling, "Why not let me tell me own story, matey." The lights flash up onto the ceiling, and you see a skull and crossbones talking, which is Captain Kidd come to life. Shocked by the turn of events, the narrator runs out of the room, leaving you with the captain. Then, after a joke by the captain about the narrator, he resumes the story of his famed treasure hunt and his unfortunate demise. Along the way, there are projections along the ceiling showcasing things such as maps and pictures of his ship, the Rosa. I forgot to mention, within the story, he sings 2 songs about his journey. At the end, he leads the audience in a rousing rendition of Yo Ho (A Pirates Life For Me).

I hope you like!
I love your concept. Maybe it's the pirate in me but it sounds fun.

That is awesome! Share some info that you get! :D
And I will share what I can.

Welcome to Shanghai Disneyland contestants!

TikiRoom.JPG

There's something about the Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room that just screams Disney Parks, isn't there? Well guess what…. We're bringing it to Shanghai! Just not as you think…

I don't want any… I mean any Tiki's in this Tiki Room … Or the classic four birds that we know so well….

You guys have to do a show with singing birds, plants, and whatever other magic you can bring together for a musical show!

Same elements as the regular old tiki room. Most of the show should be suspended above you. Show be similar to a musical show, nothing to crazy. Guests must stay in stable seats, no Philharmagic elements here people. Just a nice rif on a classic. Hopefully with some new technology or a pre-show, but not required.

Since we don't know much about "Main Street" and "Tomorrowland" or even "Frontierland" there, you guys are allowed to use 2 lands for you new attraction, Fantasyland or Adventureland. Pick one and build your theme from there!

You can use different known disney characters from disney movies, if you wish.

It's Monday, and well Monday's are a pain. So I'll help you guys out a tiny bit with some pictures to get some ideas. Seriously, these are just ideas, use what you want!

Contestants, I need a fresh take on a Disney Park classic before the clock strikes 12!

Now, on another note, I'm going to see if this can add something for this competition...

The Winner of Challenge 3 will receive the advantage of points. Yes, 3 nice points!

Good Luck!

So due to time issues I haven't been able to participate in the last two challenges but Today I will submit my first challenge idea. I honestly did take inspiration from The picture of the singing birds at the beginning of the Disney Sing along, so I thought why not make a musical Sing Along show at Shanghai Disneyland!?? The shows feel will be very much like Mickeys philharmagic but on a grander scale in terms of Physical sets.

The attraction will be called "Disney Musical Adventures" It will take you through numerous different classic Disney songs, for everyone to enjoy! Apart from all these songs being Disney Songs or Disney related, there are also some Disney moments I through into the mix that aren't as well known and I think deserve some kind of recognition in the parks!

the show itself will be very much like "The Enchanted Tiki Room" in terms of the audience seating and viewing. But the show will not be about singing birds or tikis. This musical adventure will feature Professor Owl as your Host and teacher, taking you through classic Disney songs that will get you dancing and singing along in no time! I decided to bring Professor Owl back because I feel like he is a great smaller character made by Disney that not many people know about.

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100929024924/disney/images/e/e8/Professor-lg.jpg

The queue leading up to the show winds through a hallways with the walls waving back and forth like an exposed Film cell and on each slide there will be a different Disney movie clip playing as you pass by. On your way through the queue you will fill your mind with all those great classic Disney songs you know and love. You then enter the main attraction area. The inside is made to look like Professor Owls School house. There are two sections of seating, with both sections divided in half. So more like 4 sections. In the middle is one long strip of ground for the different parts of the show to take place and make its way through.

The beginning starts off with Professor Owl welcoming you to the Disney Musical Adventure! from the sealing comes down all his bird students and the first song is the traditional Sing Along medley. he also will be on his own small floating stand that will come back to the center to introduce each song and then goes off to the side to watch.

The show will be able to swap in and out between 15 different immersive scenes. So each show will be different. Each song will feature a float(much like Festival of the lion king) with the star AA figure on it and some theming to the movie and around the audience and above will be AA figures on a smaller scale like in Tiki Room.

The Disney Movies/ characters being featured are:

Beauty and the Beast- Be our Guest

(this scene will feature Lumiere on the Float and dancing dishes and other things floating above guests

Mary Poppins- Jolly Holiday

(this scene will have Mary and Bert on the float as very advanced AA figures and around the audience will be the dancing animals and penguins and what not)

The Muppets- Rainbow Connection

(This float will be smaller with just Kermit on the log on the water singing with the banjo. Around the audience in hidden location for the final chorus, different Muppets friends will come out and join Kermit like Miss Piggy, Gonzo and Fozzie

The Little Mermaid- Under the Sea

(this float will feature Sebastian and some other fish friends and in the audience some very cool fish dancing friends)

Jungle Book- I wanna be like you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JDzlhW3XTM
(this float will feature and AA King Louie singing and his little fan friend that likes to whistle. In the audience numerous Monkeys on vines fall down from the sealing and join in on the song!)

Finding Nemo- Somewhere beyond the sea
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uB7JT4t-_E0
(This scene will be fairly simple with a new version of the Tank gang all singing the song, and coral coming out on from the audience)

Enchanted- Happy Working Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-Ra7nwZRN4
(AA of Giselle on the float themed to the movie and then a bunch of critters helping her clean form around the audience to help sing along.)

Lion King- I just can't wait to be king
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXs8OS6EdAE
(This scene will feature Simba and Nala AA figures on the float and then different animals around the outside)

Aladdin- Friend Like Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99Op1TaXmCw
(This float will feature an AA genie and numerous other genies and special effects around the audience.)

Toy Story- You've got a friend in me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzb6wZX4e4E
(Wheezy AA figure on the float and Barbies, Army men, and some other Toy Story characters to sing the song with the guests)

Hercules- Zero to Hero
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQX9DJaDZkY
(the muses are scattered throughout the theatre and in the center is a AA Hercules and Pegasus)

Legend of Sleepy Hollow- The Headless Horseman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEsklC3hb0o
(float featuring AA Brom Bones, singing the classic Headless horseman song. Around the room its gets dark and eerie and spooky branches with Owls come down. This is a unique and different choice but I felt it was needed. The owls also start to sing the parts where more then one person sings. At the end the Headless Horseman rides across the stage as a separate AA figure)

Dinosaurs- Im the Baby
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-NwPEbPPzA

(this is another unique scene and will feature the Sinclair Family singing "Im the Baby gotta love me")

Alice in Wonderland- All in the golden Afternoon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0lbfEb8MMk

(The center float will feature Alice and the Red Rose and numerous other flowers will fill the audience)

Each show will feature five different songs and start with the Disney sing along song, and end with the Finale of Mickey Mouse Club song! This experience is sure to be immersive and an upgraded type of Enchanted Tiki Room style attraction. At the end the guests will exit the opposite way.

The Attractions itself will be located in Fantasyland!!! Hope you enjoy the choices of songs and the idea! I know its rough but I can really picture the mash up of it all!

The Joy of Flight

Located in Fantasyland, the Joy of Flight is a variety show featuring the talents of some of the lesser known winged characters of Disney. It should be located near the Dumbo spinner ride, and it's exterior would appear like a well themed circus tent surrounded by birdhouses.

circus-tent1.jpg

(note, this is concept only, NOT to scale)

Show Mechanics

The star of the show is the unique use of lighting and rear projection on all the walls (360 horizontal and 180 vertical, the entire hemisphere will be able to be projected or lit in some manner...in fact, if the guests were to go into the tent when it was not in use, they would see the walls are actually white screens.

There is only a smattering of actual physical props that are colored like the tent (poles, trapeze, columns, benches, the center stage, etc.) These physical items are to disguise the fact that the interior they are viewing is really just a projection on a screen and a series of lighting tricks.

This is integral for the show, as it will make very little use of animetronics or props once inside. Again, to offer the "illusion" and a distraction to tell the story without the guests making the connection that's it's just a "projection".

The show will have a variety of lighting and projection units, and will actually lean more on this for visual effects rather than actual animetronics (explained in show section). The walls will, likewise, be projection units. An example of the style is:

Another unique aspect of this show will be the audio system. Highly tuned speakers will be littered around the show building at all angles, and even under the benches, allowing for "3D Sound". In addition, guests will be issued wireless headphones, much like 3D glasses would be issued for a 3D movie.

This allows for the show to utilize sound and lighting to tell the story, again without relying on lots of animetronics. This would be similar to the barber shop that used to be at Sound's Dangerous, or the animal sounds at Rafiki Watch in Animal Kingdom.

(listen with headphones for best effect)

birdhouse.jpg

So, in summary, the key to this ride is not the show, but rather the way the show is presented. But, that being said, lets move on to the show itself!

The Show

Guests would enter the queue, which is really a small stage with a constantly running show. Here, they will meet some hilarious characters, namely the crows from Dumbo.

dumbo05.jpg

As the guests wait, the crows will talk amongst each other, performing gags, telling jokes and just generally having fun, but generally ignoring the audience. Importantly they have a few lines where they chatter about how the tent belongs to someone else, and he doesn't like to share, so they hope they don't get caught "like last time".

As the showtime nears, the lead Crow (Jack) will notice the guests, and start talking with his friends.

Jack: Hey, I thought this place was for birds only? What are they?
Straw Hat: Are you saying this show is for the birds? I thought you said it would be fun?
Jack: No! Well, I guess. (chuckles) Yeah, now that you mention it, this show is for the birds!
Glasses: I think those are (peers through his glasses in a way that it looks like he is looking at a particular child)...I dunno. Are those people?
Fat: I don't know, I once knew a fish that could talk to whales!
Preacher: Yeah, but the wierdest thing I've ever seen is seeing an elephant fly!
Jack: Wait, did you say a fish that could talk to whales?
Jack: Hrm, think it would work Glasses?
Glasses: Don't see why not!
Jack: Ok, lets try the. (leans forward and waves his hand) Hello people!

(waits for a response, but the "Hello people" just sounds like caws to the audience)

Glasses: I don't think they heard you. Try again!
Jack: HEEEEELLLLOOOOO PEEEEEOOOPLEEEE, can you UNDEEERRRRRSTAAAAND MEEEE?

(again it sounds like caws, except for "can you")

Glasses: Maybe they should put on their "ears"?

(a visual queue plays to inform the audience to put on their wireless headphones)

Jack: HELLLO EVERYONE!

(the audience should respond. From this point, audio will play both inside the 3D audio headphones, and on positioned speakers for people who choose not to wear the headphones, or can't. While the impact of the 3D audio is greater with the hi-fidelity cup style headphones, the show is still understandable without them)

Jack: Well, let me tell you that you are in the right spot. I'm guessing you can't fly...
Fat: (Interrupts) Yeah, they don't have enough feathers! (shows off his feathers)
Jack: Yeah! But, they can still come with us and see what it's like to be able to fly!

(they chatter amongst themselves about how cool that is)

The doors open for the interior theater.

Jack: Ok, everyone, come with us. We may not be able to teach you to fly, but we can try. Come on in!

As guests enter the tent, they take a seat on circular benches, they hear (but do not see) the other crows though speakers littered throughout the exterior edges of the room. "Go on" "Grab a seat" "Don't forget, move to the end" "Lets get everyone in!" From this point forward, the crows will be voices only, as if they are sitting with the audience (again, using speakers placed under the benches and around the walls).

circustentinterior.jpg

An announcer appears as the lights dim. A spotlight shines on The Owl from Winnie the Pooh standing in the center of the room!

owl_new.png

Owl: Ahem, yes, thank you crows. Please, please all be seated. Ahem... Today we are going to take a trip, on your behalf, through the world of those who can fly!

The lights flicker with colors and spotlights, very quickly, giving the impression that the ceiling and walls (which are currently bare) has thousands of multicolored flying birds. Similar to the effect here (lighting / projection only, no need to watch it again, just skip to 3 minutes ahead in the World of Coke video above to get the idea if you want to see it again)

Owl goes into a short song custom written for this attraction called "It's Great to Fly!"

(the audience hears the crows chattering and laughing with each other as music plays)

Jack: Owl, that's great, but can we get on with the acts? We came here to see the show too!
Owl: Ahem, yes yes. So, to show you through the world of flight, lets bring out our first act with a flying creature so agile they can fly through the smallest cracks, so determined that nothing will stop them, so noble that they only harm those who threa...
Preacher: Oh, come on Owl, get on with it!
Owl: Ahem...my, my. Allright, I present to you, the BEE!

Spotlight fades on owl, and a single spotlight shines on a small bee up towards the top of the tent!

i-dd0c1f75211c7895b7ba7be2b60a7569-spike%20the%20bee.jpg

Music starts up and some new bees appear, obviously female, and made to look like a 30s or 40s radio jingle group:

1282438-1940s-Radio-Hour_LindsaySchnebly_large.jpg.300x207_q100.jpg

The music is Bee Day!

The song suddenly ends and a crash is heard towards the rear of the tent, and someones distinctive voice is heard.

Donald Duck: Hey, what are you rascals doing in here! I'll get you!

Sounds of bug spray begin to play, and the audience sees our friendly bee being chased around (but don't see Donald, they just hear him).

(as you can see, the Bee and Donald have had a long term rivalry)

The antics change periodically, but overall this scene isn't very long (maybe a minute or two) before the Bee gets fed up and stings Donald, eliciting his distinctive yell. Using the 3D audio system, it will sound like Donald is being chased away.

Owl appears again center stage, cowering under his wings as the crows chatter and laugh.

Jack: You ok there, Mr. Owl?
Owl: (brushing himself off) Yes...yes...Well, we should be moving...
Glasses: (interrupting) You know what I wander, Mr. Owl?
Owl: to our...wait, what? (obviously flustered) What's that?
Glasses: I wonder if these cats here...
Fat: (interrupting) Wait, I hope they aren't cats!
Glasses: ...ha ha, ok. Well, I wonder if these people know birds invented singing?
(crows chime in together that they too wonder that)
Owl: Well, this is out of the ordinary, but I suppose we could tell them. But first, we should explain how they developed music, so they can appreciate how much sooner we've perfected it. See (turning to the audience), we birds have been singing a very long time. Since the beginning of time, almost. While, you humans? Well...lets just say it all started with a boom.

Owl then goes on to lead a chorus of animetronic birds in:

Towards the end of the song, Donald's voice is heard again. Yelling and coming closer.

Owl: He's back again? Where is that Bee!

Owl flies away and then an animetronic Donald bursts onto the center stage ranting and basically...being angry Donald.

The crows chatter things like "I don't know, where did he go" "I think we should get out of here" "Wait, that guy looks like a bird, he's got feathers" "Oh, that's silly, only birds have feathers!" "Well, he's not flying, so he can't be a bird" "Whew boy, if he is he sure is missing out!" "Hey boys, I have an idea, lets show him how to fly! We've done it before!"

The audience hears, but doesn't see the crows, but the animetronic Donald is shown bouncing between the various wires and trapeze trying to catch them. The crows are indicated using shadows (rather than light) to make it appear they are flying around the tent, using a different style of projection than was used before.

The chase goes on all over the tent, with lots of comedic back and forth, and culminates in a great crash towards the center of the room and all the lights go out.

It stays dark for about 30 seconds as the guests "hear" the crows flying around them and joking good natured about how "We showed him, but it seemed he didn't want to learn!"

Then you hear a muffled Donald screeching and yelling (muffled, he's gagged). A spotlight shines, and there he is, wrapped in a trapeze on center stage with the handle gagging his mouth. And he looks MAD!

At this point, the crows decide it's time to "fly the coop" (making that joke amongst others), and say to the audience that they should to. "Don't want to be around that time bomb when he gets free!"

The lights come up as the "tied up" Donald animetronic is lowered into the center stage platform, and the guests exit the show.

An announcer appears as the lights dim. A spotlight shines on The Owl from Winnie the Pooh standing in the center of the room!

Music starts up and some new bees appear, obviously female, and made to look like a 30s or 40s radio jingle group:

Well...lets just say it all started with a thump.

I love how you kept the bird and kept it the same yet complete different from the Tiki Room.

The new take on the Tiki Room in Shanghai Disneyland, will be based on The Jungle Book with your hosts: Baloo and King Louie! Situated in Adventureland, the façade will resemble an old temple overtaken by the Jungle around it. First, guests wait in the entryway to the main chamber of the temple. Throughout this waiting area will be the musical plant technology created by Disney allowing guest to play with them. The main part of the preshow will be an animatronic Bagheera who is in an argument with Baloo. Baloo wants to put on a music show for the Village nearby, and obviously Bagheera disproves of this.

The main show will take place in a similar Theatre in the Round like the Enchanted Tiki Room. Once guests enter there will be a “Villager” who tells everyone that they are the first of the people to get to watch Baloo and King Louie’s musical show. He leaves and then from the ceiling, Baloo and King Louie descend on a makeshift platform welcoming everyone. Baloo introduces the band who are monkeys up in the ceiling, the backup singers who are birds up in the roof canopy, and the stars of the show: Himself and King Louie! The platform rises a bit, and the first song begins: “I want to be like you.” Baloo and King Louie dance as they sing. The next song is “Bare Necessities”. After the song finishes, King Louie and Baloo’s platform suddenly rises as the room turns dark. The Vultures appear as they begin to sing “That’s what friends are for”, ultimately the platform comes back down and the Vultures leave, leaving King Louie and Baloo to sing and dance “I want to be like you” once again. After that song the doors open and everyone leaves as King Louie and Baloo thank you for your time.

One Little Spark...
I love how you kept the bird and kept it the same yet complete different from the Tiki Room.
Thanks! Even being able to use Disney characters, I was having trouble coming up with what to do. This came to me during lunch. Fleshed out a bit differently then I first imagined, but that's how things go I guess!

I really wanted to find a different character group than the crows due to some of the (possibly overblown) controversy that surrounds them (I even changed the lead crow's name...because that just seems to confirm it. His real first name is Jim, something I didn't know until tonight.).

But, they are such colorful characters, playful yet wise, loyal friends and funny...they were perfect foils to carry the script along and able to tie the theme together (being a circus tent). I couldn't think of any other characters that could do that (and I sure as HECK wasn't including Iago!)

So it's a risk, like including characters from Song of the South. Hopefully one that won't ding me! Seemed to work out ok for Splash Mountain though!
