When guest enter, the room is black and white due to a light shining down on the front of the wall. What most don't know is that there's actually a second wall behind the black and white wall (the black and white wall is really more like a curtain than a wall). After the "show", they switch off the lighting on the front and switch it to back-lighting. The other effects are simple lighting effects that are done on a timer, much like how one may synchronize christmas lights on a house or fireworks to music. My favorite section, personally, is the villains section in the dark that makes the paintbrushes fiery torches and makes thunder and lightning strike throughout the room, with all of the villains paintings in full color.
